I made a vow to write a review immediately after the show ended and believe me when I say the emotions are still raw. Where do I even start? Eternal Love is such a compelling and beautiful piece I don't think I can find the exact words to describe it.

The story is brilliant in itself and I am honestly sure it did the book justice. I think if you're watching this read more without reading the book beforehand, you would love the show a lot more because you're watching without expectations plus either way, Eternal Love will blow you away (even if you're not a fantasy/xianxia/historical genre kind of person) Also, If you like The Journey of Flower, you will love this without a doubt.

Everything, every single thing is so stunning from the costumes, to the set and the cinematography. And the most beautiful part is, of course, their love story. The different clans coming together and all the magical elements and all are very interesting. I won't delve into the story too much because its pretty complicated but fear not, you will never be bored of it for a second.

The acting was spectacular. Yang Mi did a fantastic job as always. Although it was my first time watching Mark Chao, his character as either Mo Yuan or Ye Hua is so easily to fall in love with because he is that good at acting. Chemistry was flawless. A transparent love was beautifully portrayed; you could feel their love and pain and share their happiness. Kiss scenes are very good too. They're not exactly rough but tender and deep? I honestly did not expect so many kiss scenes because I was quite disappointed with the lack of intimacy in The Journey of Flower but you're blessed here :')

Every other character was very likeable having their own unique personalities. The other side characters and love stories are also super sweet especially Dong Hua's and Feng Jui's.

It seems like everything about the drama is perfect even its music is so apt. The entire OST is so enchanting played at right timings. The duet is so haunting which really gives Bai Qian & Ye Hua moments that goosebumps. So, so good.

The only problem I have (not with the drama) is that I hate misunderstandings that cause conflicts in a relationship which my heart cannot handle. Ye Hua and Bai Qian's relationship has many 'tragedies' that can really break your heart because they've been through so many tribulations caused by some side bitches but in the end, everything for this drama is worth it.

Rewatch it? Definitely. No qualms about it.

This is truly a masterpiece and I can safely say Eternal Love is my favourite C-Drama.

Probably the first time a drama of this length has me thoroughly enthusiastic from beginning to end. More rare is the case of a drama adaptation not only breathing life to its book, but surpasses the original work in every aspect. The challenge is to stop oneself from the binge to see how this karmic game of fate, love, misunderstanding and tragedy takes three 'lifetimes' to resolve. Even if fantasy is not read more one's cup of tea, the love/romance here is one everyone can enjoy

*Story (10/10)
This drama has done a wondrous job keeping faithful to the original story while incorporating parts of its spinoff "The Pillow Book" about the secondary lead pairing. The Chinese title of this drama is "Three Lives Three Worlds: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms" and like its name suggests, tells the story of Ye Hua and Bai Qian - gods who are separated yet bounded by fate to find each other in their lives again throughout the course of three arcs, for a memorable journey of emotional highs and lows balanced with good action and drama. Though there are 58 episodes, it is filled with plots to leave one consistently guessing what the next development is from beginning to end.
Just as one score settles, another rises.

Characters are fleshed out and although the main couple gets the bulk of the focus, secondary characters and their relationships are not cheated out of a good storyline either.

*Acting/Cast: (9/10)
Yang Mi's Bai Qian may be the protagonist, but Mark Chao is the highlight. To express so much with so little is what Mark does wonderfully, and his ability to portray two similar characters (Ye Hua & Mo Yuan) so differently with their set of own characteristics, mannerisms and reactions is impressive. As for Yang Mi overall she did well portraying the different personalities of her characters - from playful, mischievous Si Yin to naive and innocent Su Su and finally the aloof with an attitude Bai Qian - by far her best performance. Together these two produce the chemistry to keep audiences thrilled and satisfied. Overall the cast is well put together with several other memorable faces (Zhang Bin Bin, Dilraba etc) making the drama that much more enjoyable

*Last thoughts?
- All the sets, props, scenery and people are simply eye-catching, which keeps one visually interested all the way through.
- Aside from the visual fest and story, Mark Chao is another reason to rewatch

It's been a while since I enjoyed a romance-fantasy genre this much, this will be going straight into my archive of favorites. No doubt one of the best Chinese dramas have to offer

Boss & Me got me started on my love for Mainland dramas which lead to finding Xianxa through Zao Zanilia's Journey of Flower through to Eternal Love.

Both dramas feature male leads who are powerful and cold to start of with but when they fell for the female lead they never deviated. Ye Hua and Feng Teng were the definition of 'Laser-focused'... there wasn't even a hint of a chance for the female love rivals (not that I felt at all sorry for either)

They both acknowledge the romance and couple up very early on, none of this dragging out will they-won't-they business and work through their problems with varying degrees of maturity and success. Both happy endings too. You will fall for both dramas OTPs like a ten-ton brick.

Fabulous chemistry and solid acting. Yang Mi and Zhao Zanilia are both adorable and beautiful and most importantly THEY CAN ACT. Mark Chao is also specially amazing.

Those put off by CGI don't be, its inconsequential and the plot and characters will be what you care about. I've got to say though EL had better cast of characters (It seems like there are hundreds but I loved all of them) than Boss & Me. I watched both dramas twice each now and will probably watch EL again in the near future.
Recommended by reinie
Both star Yang Mi as the lead female and she is as good as expected.

Both have enduring love as a main theme. There's even a separation of our OTPs with both EL and YAMS. Also a forced/contrived cohabitation after finding each other again.

In both you can feel our OTPs almost unbearable pull towards each other. Male leads in both have amazing chemistry with Yang Mi's characters and both can be forceful and imposing(kissing scenes in both the drama and the movie was scorching) but show their gentle sides too. Huang Xiaoming and Mark Chao both have the most amazing jawlines though Mark is undoubtedly the better actor.

EL had the best soundtrack I've heard in a while but there is also YAMS' OST: Silent by Na Ying that stood out. If you're still hung up over EL give YAMS a try if you have 2 hours to spare.

i think you might have worded your sentence about the happy ending a tad bit confusing. anyways, the drama is also called "ten miles of peach blossoms" or " three lives, three loves" or something of that nature, i've heard it in different language translations lol. From my understanding of it, the story is meant to depict a love that transcends lifetimes. BQ is a nine-tailed fox, and in the story it says that nine- tailed foxes will chose the same mate forever, regardless of how many reincarnations they go through. thats the reason why BQ falls in love with ye hua everytime, hence their happy ending is inevitable, they'll always end up with each other. as for the other love stories they're just side stories to BQ and YH. but they're still interesting to watch.

I know its still early days...but has anyone heard anything about the Pillow Book adaptation? Rumours and speculations? I know that it was bought by the different Production company but shouldn't there be more movement by now...they should be riding EL's popularity like a cowboy!

@Pinocchio unfortunately in life 'haterz gonna hate'...what I want to know is how people think this stacks up against General & I or Journey of Flower.
In all honesty I don't know either, I had a vague hope that I left the flame wars behind me in my misspent youth but I see they'll follow me to my grave. We should all just stop adding wood to the fire or alternatively give it more rope to hang itself. I don't know which I prefer...

@reinie lol being a fan brat and all is ok, but definitely I am going to stand up for whats right unlike you fan brat. Do I seem riled up? Its more like you are projecting your feelings onto me for reasons not know to me. Maybe its time to grow up for you from being a spoiled fan brat to someone having sound judgement. Twisting words don't really make you right "fan brat" or does it? Just because a "fan brat" likes this drama doesn't mean all its negatives are to be dismissed in consideration of his/her majesty the "fan brat". Seriously demented response reinie. Maybe you need a doctor too.. Its ironic that just when I am about to "move along" someone like you "comes along" lol.

Now this was a personal attack in response to your personal attack. Can you tell the difference between criticizing drama and being disrespectful or your IQ too low for that?

I feel that this drama is way too overrated. To have just .1 rating lower than epic masterpiece like Nirvana in Fire is totally beyond me. Yes, the setting is beautiful with a lot of eye candy. I watched it till ep 16 and it didn't have any worthwhile moment. Worse yet, it is adapted from plagiarized piece of work that constantly strikes on conscience while watching the drama. I feel that the popularity of this drama is typical case of a "fad" and "bandwagoning". In hindsight, when the euphoria has died down, people will realise how cliched it is.
    Edit 1 on 11th July:
Following are douban ratings for both Nirvana in Fire and Eternal love. Although shared by a detractor of my comment, it actually corroborates my claim that this drama is highly overrated on this site.

    https://movie.douban.com/subject/25975243/
    https://movie.douban.com/subject/25754848/

    Edit 2 on 12th July:
Irrespective of its comparison with any drama out there, the fact that its "plagiarized" is enough to say that its overrated and not worth 1 percent of the defense its getting. One reason its not rated highly on douban is because its plagiarized.Google translating the first comment on douban will tell you how sensitive issue of plagiarism about this drama is in mainland China.

    Edit 3 on 14th July:

Here is a proof of how the writer stole not only the whole setting from another author but has also copy/paste whole lines, sentences and characters. It would also be wise to remember that this is just what the author of this drama stole from 1 other author. There is high probability that there numerous other lesser know writers from which she stole.. The writer of this drama is notorious for stealing the work of little know writers and claiming it as her own. Consider the audacity of the author of this novel that after plagiarizing from the other writer, she sent that writer the novel of this drama as a gift.

I can agree that NIF is a pretty boring tv show. There aren't much scenes where I can relate to or get impressed by and make me watch multiple episodes per day. Perhaps the only thing that kept me watching was the mystery behind the massacre of Chi Yan Jun. That being said, NIF is still a great tv show because of the way it is executed. Hu Gu does an exellent job portraying his character because that is what his character is supposed to be like! Also, the production quality of this tv show is one of the best in the historical drama category. The only ones I can think of that is on its level are like ZHZ, Three Kingdoms, The Advisors Alliance, etc. I really suggest finishing this drama. Maybe you won't have the eagar to get through all the episodes in one day, but this drama is truly one of the best and worth finishing.

It is interesting to see different opinions about dramas. Sometimes the scenes people likes are exactly the one other people hates. :-D I appreciate most commenters clearly give the reasons why they like or dislike the drama. For me both NIF and EL are interesting and worth watching. Don't depends on the rating so much, it is normal it maybe not your taste while the others are crazy about it. On the not so high rated drama sites, there are also enough people complaining how under-rated the drama is. btw, Douban rating is totally different from mydramalist, a lot of romance dramas with young actors and actresses leads are never high rated. Their taste is more for serious dramas while mydramalist is with more romantic kdrama fans. Honestly speaking, not much for reference if you are more kdrama fan...

No matter like or dislike in the end please do give a chance to at least finish it before you make the judgement. If it is too long to start and you r not afraid of spoilers, try some MVs or short clips on youtube to see if it is your taste. Or some recap blogs. The blog "The Problematic of the unproblematic" is the best among them. Just look for the tag of "three lives three worlds ten miles peach blossoms". Totally hilarious recaps about EL there (btw, they made NIF recap as well). Or try the novel directly.

PS: It is not fair to compare dramas of different genres. NIF and EL although both are historical dramas, one focuses on the strategy side and one is pure romance. The audience group is also totally different. NIF is more all around with huge number of male and elderly audience while EL is mainly for young ladies. But both are top production in its genre. Please do give a chance to finish them. :-)

Don't believe the ratings in douban. The users of douban are mostly crazy about western things and obsequious to westerns, in China we call it 崇洋媚外. 90% of them are western culture fans and of course the fans of western dramas. So 90% of Chinese dramas are undervalued there regardless of how popular they are.The ratings in Chinese video websites are more objective since the users really watched the drama not like many douban users who haven't even watched a complete episode. In fact this drama create a new record of views in Chinese internet.

The copyright issue of the TV series has nothing to do with whether it is good or not. plagiarism is a problem between the producer and the author. Whether the TV play is good or not is depend on the effort of the director and the actors. In fact almost all IP dramas have copyright issues, this has become a means of making topics and a means of attracting attentions. As an audience, I focus only on the drama itself.

Funny thing, the opposite of what happened with me while watching EL is happening with PA. When I started EL my interest was so so, watched because I was bored. However as the series went on the interest grew and then after the 10-14 episodes came, I was addicted. Whereas with PA I was addicted from the beginning, but as the drama goes on my interests started to wane. And then by the 10-13 episodes I ended up dropping it and went back to watching Eternal Love haha.

BQ says in like episode 26 that since this whole experience was simply a heavenly trial for her to become a high goddess, then the experience wasn't of much use to her so why not forget it since it was so painful.

as for why YH wanted to remember it, that's not stated directly in the drama. but I would assume it's because it was one of the best times of his life when he finally felt that he could do smth to his heart's desire and not have to constantly follow what the Heavenly Emperor wanted to do and also he probably felt guilty towards her and probably wanted to remember her so he could tell A'Li too

For all people who like me read the novel To the Sky Kingdom after watching the drama... I always found the drama surpassed the novel, because the latter is totally written from Bai Qian's POV. You never get to know how YH felt and there was little or no details written about their time as Susu/YH. Because of this YH in the novel felt cold and distant to me.

Well, recently I found out that the author also wrote a side story/epilogue from YH's pov where you get to read how much he loved Susu and about his childhood. I thougt the script writers made up the YH/Susu scenes on mount junji, but it was actually also from the YH epilogue. However in To the Sky Kingdom the epilogue/side story is not included. You can find these chapters in the translated version of Hamster.
