Kim Hyuk lives a fast life as a high-ranking mobster in the port city of Busan, South Korea. His closest friend is fellow mobster Lee Young Choon. Even though Kim Hyuk seems to be on top of the world, he is haunted by the memory of leaving behind his younger brother, Kim Chul, and mother as they attempted to flee into South Korea from North Korea. Kim Hyuk's mother was beaten to death, and Kim Chul was imprisoned after they were caught by North Korean authorities. Kim Hyuk then travels to Thailand with new gang recruit Jung Tae Min for a meeting with Thai gangsters. The meeting turns out to be a set-up, planned in part by Jung Tae Min. Kim Hyuk is able to shoot his way out of the meeting, but he is later caught by the Thai police and imprisoned. When good friend Lee Young Choon hears of what happened to Kim Hyuk in Thailand, he goes to the Thai gang's holdout in Pusan to kill their boss. During the shootout, Jung Tae Min is shot in the leg. Three years later, Kim Hyuk is finally released from prison and travels back to Busan. He finds his close friend Lee Young Choon washing cars now and has a limp leg. Jung Tae Min, the man that betrayed him, has climbed up the mob ranks and is now a feared crime boss. Furthermore, Kim Hyuk's younger brother Kim Chul has arrived in Busan and works for the Busan Police Department. Meanwhile, Kim Chul keeps close tabs on Jung Tae Min as he attempts to take down their gang. When Jung Tae Min attempts to take out Kim Hyuk's younger brother, Kim Hyuk throws himself back into the gang world to exact revenge. Edit Translation

I read somewhere that the original was better and that if you liked it, you would find this one falls short to expectations. So, if you're planning on watching something that copies or exceeds the original, consider yourself forewarned.

Since I have not seen the original, I have to say I really enjoyed it. Then again, it was the first time I watched an all-action-packed Korean film.

The relationship between the main characters and the lengths they go through to show us the meaning of loyalty and "family," while everyone gets beat up, shot or blown up was surprising. Never thought I would feel emotional watching something like it.

The end...well...makes you glad it is finally over. I think it deserved a better finale and that the director just got tired and wrapped everything up by deciding to have everyone act out of character.

I don't really believe that the "rewatch" value should be considered as "brilliant", but I would watch it again.

A Better Tomorrow does have action but I can't say that it is the real draw. Mostly this is due to the action not being shown till the very end. The real story here is the relationship between the main characters. JJM, SSH, and KKW really got to show thier acting chops which surprised me because I thought this was just another action/ crime movie. At times I felt like I was watching a melodrama lol. Really though I love the characters and acting, the story/plot was just average which the long runtime didnt help. The ending was fitting for this type of movie so be prepared. Overall the actors are what carry this movie which makes it a good enough watch. I cant say if id watch it again or not just because the story wasnt bad but it wasnt amazing either. Worth watching once though.
