Finally i have completed YI SAN!!!! People this is the LONGEST DRAMA EVER I`V WATCHED. Don`t get me wrong i loved it, the length was not really called for thu. I think they could have cap it around 50 episodes the most. The Music was very good but i gave it an average score due to the limited variety, it was the same song over and over. The rewatch score cut due read moreto the length and not the quality.
Its a beautiful story of a hard working king, whom loved his people with his very life. He is truly one of Korea`s greatest ruler. Yi san tells the story of King Jeongjo, or Yi San, the 22nd ruler of the Joseon Dynasty, revered in Korean history for his championing of democratic rights for the Korean people, and for his bureaucratic reform, Be advice the ending is very sad:'(
This drama is placed with 3 other historicals as my all time favorites. Dae Jang Geum, Dong Yi and Queen Seondeok. There are many other good historicals but these are my 11's on a 10 based scale. What is different about this drama vs those is that the main lead is actually a man instead of a woman. Dong Yi showed the life of musicians, Dae Jang Geum showed the life of read morea physician and a cook. Yi san shows a different profession in the joseon period which is equally as interesting. I have watched this drama several times (at LEAST 4x) and i will watch it again. A 77 hour epic. I have read that as this drama got extended and extended again due to its popularity during it's run.. the competitors to the network delayed their own new drama's premiers as to compete with Yi San would have been a ratings disaster. Lee Seo Jin is the best portray-er of a king i have ever seen. Every cast member did an outstanding job. I watch all my drama's as binge. So much i want to add to this review but it might be construed as a spoiler. Like who yi sans great great grandmother is. Why he cared about poor people, why some nobles were so opposed to his reign. Who his father was. But since they might be construed as spoilers you have to watch it yourself and see. If you liked those other drama's i mentioned, YI SAN fits right in. A true timeless classic with love, friendship, loyalty and perseverance. Just writing this review i want to watch all 4 of these again. These drama's are so good you will rejoice at having altzimers so you can watch them again and again as if it was the first time every time! One last comment, the child actors! Where does South Korea find these child actors! I have NEVER seen anything outside South Korea where child actors add to the magic instead of detracting from it. They do such a good job that they set the hook.. that snares me for the whole wild 77 hour ride into another time and place!
They are both about a romance between the king, and a lowly peasant who later becomes one of his concubines. There is also hate towards the main lead girl due to her low social status, and if you have seen Dong Yi, Yi San is King Sukjon's (the kinf in Dong Yi) which is also the king in Jang Ok Jung, is his great-grandson.
I just finished this and I'm honestly dying. SUCH a great drama with a terribly heart destroying ending. I've slept over it, and yet I still feel like crying. I'd even read a spoiler earlier, and expected it to happen, yet that STILL DID NOT stop the tears. This is definitely without a doubt a drama worth watching, especially if like myself, you enjoy historical dramas.
Now that I found out this is about the Son of Crown Prince Sado - I need to watch this drama as soon as I finish Hwajeong! (I keep thinking back to Crown Prince Sado as he was portrayed in 'Secret Door' and after reading about him I started wanting to see a drama about his son - and to my surprise there is one! :D )
Wow! I'm at episode 10 and it's so boring. I'm very disappointed. :/
Also I can't stand the lead girl portrayal, she constantly has this dumb-teary- weak-hurt look on her face... I guess they wanted to portray kindness and softness but it's giving another feel...more like extremely pathetic.
You are the 1st person I've run across to comment negatively on Han Ji Min's acting. I dropped this drama at Ep 33 because I could not watch her anymore. I have seen her in 4 other dramas out of which there was only one I enjoyed = Jewel in the Palace because she was in Supporting Role.
She didn't adopt any. But Hong Gook Young requested that it just get registered that she adopted a child. So although she didn't adopt him while she was alive, and he isn't her son, LEGALLY and in the law and family tree, he's registered as her son
I just finished this without any episode unleft watching....spectacular drama a very well made and d acting is superb....speechless i may say but it waz very honorific...i cried,i laugh and i loved.....lee seo jins portraying d king and how he love consort ui is so touching....until the end of d drama dat i cannot control tears falling fr my eyes....i love this.... With soooo mhch effort and work done by everybody who make this possible congratulations!!! Keep up d good work!
I'm a huge sageuk fan but this didnt do it for me...for most parts it was so boring espeically the politics bits I had to skip through so many episodes! The only thing that kept me going was the romance between Song Yeon and the King...it was lovely but as a whole my least favourite sageuk so far.
I really like the Prince, he tries to be kind and yet has to be prepared for tough fights. The music is beautiful too. The story can become frustrating with some of the arcs and some of the decisions of the prince. Let's just say he tries to be wise in his decisions and tries to have a very open and loving heart. Really do like him personally. Expect a lot of usual court intrigues but some very likeable and less likeablle characters, loyal friends and enemies out there to get the protagonist at all cost all the time- they are rather inexhaustible in their efforts too, which also may give you a sense of frustration. The love storyline is one filled with a great sense of longing and need, it's quite touching. Yi San is a real man.
