The Fangirl vs. the Brain:
Why Did I Watch This?

Before You Proceed:

1. This post is loaded with ranting and occasional bashing, so I find myself obliged to offer my sincerest apologies for all the fans out there.

2. I’m not sure I can convince anyone including myself that I’m sane after this post.

3. It contains one major spoiler about the Nice Guy’s final. The spoiler is marked. Don’t read unless you’re cool with ruining the finale.

Me: This is a conversation between an emotionally distressed fan girl and her own brain.

Brain: (O_o)!!

Me: What?

Brain: Are you sure you want to do this? A lot of people will think that you’re schizophrenic after this.

Me: No, they won’t. MDL readers are good and understanding people. Aren't they?

Brain: Just remember that I have warned you. When people start avoiding you, don’t come to me crying and asking what went wrong.

Me: Okay.

Brain: That being said. Can you tell me what all the fuss is about?

Me: Sure. It’s about how I watch and sometimes enjoy dramas that you totally hate and dismiss as unwatchable.

Brain: Interesting... Do you mean like FAITH

Me: What the HELL is wrong with Faith?

Brain: Nothing. It’s better than other atrocities you've made me endure, but I can’t ignore the low production values, the repetitive plot lines, the weird camera angles, and the slow pace.

Me: STOP! You’re making it sound like a horrible drama. It’s not a masterpiece but it’s good and I enjoyed it. Plus, it has Lee Min Ho <3 . <3.

Brain: Playing a 14th Century Goreoyo warrior.

Me: What’s wrong with that? He looked fine.

Brain: Oh, PLEASE! Anyone can tell he’s a supermodel. He ain’t fierce enough to be a warrior.

Me: What do you mean? My Lee Min Ho isn't man enough!! I hate you!

Brain: No, I HATE Lee Min Ho: he’s my mortal enemy. You paralyze me whenever the guy’s name is mentioned and he’s not even a good actor.

Me: He’s not going to win the Oscars soon. But he can deliver.

Brain: Yeah! I thought he was constipated in some of his scenes in Faith. I’m sure you got bored watching it. Why the hell did you continue? And don’t tell me for the sake of the plot. I know you’re not interested in political conspiracies.

Me: I liked seeing Lee Min Ho’s big hands.

Brain: What???

Me: He was wearing a dress historical warrior's outfit the whole time. I couldn't see the details of his legs or arms but the hands, they kinda shined throughout the drama. He has such nice hands.

Brain: Which proves my point. Warriors don't have nice hands, so they can never be the hands of a warrior. *smirk*

Me: Don’t be so mean!

Brain: I’m not, and it’s not the first time you watch a drama for the sake of beautiful actors. What about Playful Kiss?

Me: Let’s not talk about it. It almost killed my love for Asian Dramas.

Brain: Yet, you kept watching. You even watched the specials. I don’t get you.

Me: The couple was very beautiful and the whole setting was lovely, and the colors were bright. It was a delight…

Brain: *eye-roll* The beauty thing again! You’re very superficial for a girl who pretends she believes beauty is that of the soul.

Me: Gimme a break! I was still a new fan then, and I was just out of Boys Over Flowers's daze. Kim Hyung Joon was….

Brain: Stiff as a dead stone. He didn't betray any emotion in any scene whatsoever, and he was an undeserving jerk… and the girl, man, she was stupid! The whole show was anti-feminist. The girl didn't have any positive qualities except for diligently stalking him!  Was Korea trying to teach teenage girls to stalk their crushes and suffocate them until they have no choice but to love them back? What kind of theme is that?  How could you watch that show?

Me: Can’t argue with that; let’s stop bashing the show now. You know some people really like it. *worried looks*

Brain: Whatever, I don’t like it and you certainly didn't like it too, but you chose to ignore my wise critique and watch the thing till the end.

Me: Fans are really going to throw rotten tomatoes at us. Stop!

Brain: There is no such thing as "us". It’s just you, weirdo. I’m your brain.

Let’s move on. What’s your defense for “Nice Guy?” You knew it’s a melodrama from the very start. Don’t you generally hate tragedies and try to avoid them like the plague?

Me: Shut up! How dare you? Nice Guy is a very well-made drama. It’s gorgeously shot with poetic direction. The cinematography is breathtaking. To top it all, it’s helmed with amazing performances from the lead actors who happen to be very pretty and good at what they're doing.

Brain: I can give you that. But we both know the story is a somehow cliché. Do you know how low the probability of getting back your memory after having amnesia is?

Me: *looks suspiciously* THAT’S IN REAL LIFE. You forget this is DRAMALAND we’re talking about.

Brain: **MAJOR SPOILER***WARNING***ARE YOU SURE? **

But I suppose it’s perfectly normal to be kissing your sweetheart after he’s just been stabbed in the guts without even realizing he’s bleeding to death…

**END OF MAJOR SPOILER***SAFE*** MOVE ON**

Me: *staring at the other side*… It was very … unexplainable, but you can't judge the whole show on its end, when it was good overall.

Brain: Fine, except for the end and the amnesia, the show was considerably better than many other dramas you've made me sit through. I confess I somehow enjoyed it - to a certain extent. Something I can’t say about another melodrama: Missing You.

Me: I only enjoyed specific parts of Missing You. You know I hate over the top tragedies.

Brain: Exactly! so why watch heart-wrenching tragedies that fell upon innocent kids, no less,  and messed up their lives? I don’t get you. Are you a masochist?

Me: Yeah it was hard to watch. Most of the relationships in that drama were dysfunctional and all the characters needed intensive therapy sessions.

Brain: God knows I needed intensive therapy to process all the tragedies in that melodrama.  Didn't I tell not to watch Missing You even before the drama aired?

Me: I know you did, but I saw the teasers, and the young actors stole my heart. They had a very sweet love story with the yellow umbrella and all. Just look at them:

Brain: It's a story based on kids finding love at the age of what? 13? Don’t you supposedly hate childhood romance and think it’s completely unrealistic and excessively exaggerated?

Me: I do, but I couldn't help it. I fell in love with the young boy. Just look at this cupcake. Isn't he pretty? Look at the shiny smile and glittering tears. Doesn't it move your heart?

Brain: I’m a brain; I don’t process hearty things. In addition, I find myself obliged to remind you that Yeo Gin Goo is only 15 years old which makes him 6 years younger than you. If you start to obsess on him now, you’ll be an official pervert.

Me: Nope. I won’t be a pervert. I will be a fangirling noona, and that's okay!

Brain: Didn't you promise me to only watch the children’s part and drop the drama when the adult cast rolls in. What happened to that brilliant plan of yours?

Me: Right, that was the plan. Then, Yoo Seung Hoo happened to me. I couldn't possibly ignore him right? Oh, look at his heart-wrenching anguish. I was struck with second-lead-syndrome from the first moment. I still can’t believe he didn't get the girl.

Brain: That’s because you’re not particularly fond of Mickey Yoochun.

Me: Why did you say that out loud? Fans will eat me alive now *panicking*. And, it’s not the actor’s fault, it’s the way his character was written. It was the worst portrayal of a police detective I've ever seen. He was impulsive, emotional, constantly drunk, irrational, and he acted like a teenager all through the show.

Brain: Now, that’s what we call double standards.  It's okay not to like the older version of Han Jung Woo for being irrational, while you’re fine watching irrational shows all the times. Let’s talk about BIG

Me: *pout*

Brain: Oh stop it right now! Adults shouldn't be pouting. Damn the things you’re catching from unrealistic cute drama characters.

Me: Don't you dare to insult my cute characters!

Brain: Excuse me for leading you to the right path. If you continue this way, you’ll grow into a bubbly stupid woman. And who knows? You could fall in love with a teenager! You could fall in love with your own student just like Gil Da Ran did in Big.

Me: NO WAY in burning hell…. I know that Big was a BIG mess and it’s my fault for watching a drama, when I was against its very premise from the beginning. But it had Gong Yoo <3 although; everything else sucked BIG times, his acting was great. I love him.

Brain: You’re crazy. You’re willing to put me through hell for the sake of Lee Min Ho’s hands or Yoo Seung Ho’s anguish or whoever you obsess about.

Me: That’s not craziness or obsession. That’s a noble sacrifice of a loyal fan-girl.

Brain: *shaking head* Nope. You’re crazy.

Me: I’m NOT! (>.<)

Brain: Honey, you’re the one who has just written 1466 words about a conversation between you and your brain, and you’re posting it for all the good people of MDL to read. Nothing says crazy better than that. That's it. I’m leaving you. Let Dramaland endow you with reason and wisdom. We’ll see how Gong Yoo is going to help you with your upcoming finals.

Me: Brain... Brainy... Wait! Don’t go! GAJIMA-YOOOO

Here's the part where I’m supposed to write something smart to make you guys comment on this post. Funny enough, I can’t come up with anything. Wait, does that mean my brain has really left me? Have I gone completely crazy? Please, tell me I’m not the only one who sits up through hours of a non-sense plot for the sake of pretty actors or pretty cinematography!
