I want to put a disclaimer that this is not a romance film in the slightest it’s marketed as a thriller and because of that there is some very real depictions of violence including sexual violence ie rape. Also, both characters are very morally grey characters there are no good guys in this film so just know that going in. In my opinion the romantic elements though subtle are the strongest parts of the story as a whole and overshadow the thriller aspect of the film, which is why i find the plot a bit lacking especially since this film was marketed as a thriller/social commentary film. The toxic relationship between the two main characters Yoon Jae and Se Joon is very complex, so complex you may not truly catch everything about their relationship at first watch or even the second. However, the relationship of the boys, through subtle and not so subtle actions truly draw you in. I really wish that their relationship was the main theme of the movie because in my opinion that is where the film excels but unfortunately its not. I will say that when considering the actions of the characters I would look at everything with a critical eye that will really help with any questions you may have about the motivations of the characters. I had to watch this film 3 times to be sure of the big main question this film will leave you with. But if you go in with a critical, nuanced eye you’ll easily be able to answer that question.

Spoilers Ahead

I think Yoon Jae knew Se Joon had feelings for him and also had feelings for Se Joon as well, a lot of his actions subtly hint at that. Such as hiding the gift and his relationship with EunYoung etc. What was his motivation for that? His face when Se Joon walks away from him after finding out that he lied to him. Also, when Se Joon texts him to come outside he hesitates at first until Se Joon texts him a second time saying “its all about you”. And did no-one notice after Yoon Jae gets beat up he literally has no more scenes with Eun Young lol I know he was going through a lot but still if you like a girl you’d think to make sure she knows your alright but who did he actually go see? The real conclusive evidence is at the end though the fact that Yoon Jae even visited him at the prison and actually asked him how he was and looks tearful the whole time he’s there. If he actually liked or loved Eun Young there is no way he could visit her murderer and even ask how he was lol friend or not. Also, he never looked mad at Se Joon not even once like if someone murdered the girl you like you’d feel some anger right? Se Joon even provokes him, describing how her body smelled like perfume and he can still smell it. If he cared about Eun Young he would’ve been outraged as soon as he said that but he doesn’t care. And when Se Joon is about to confess, Yoon Jae bows his head because he already knows. And then he asks the guard to wait because he actually wants to hear him confess because he reciprocates his feelings.

Story 4.5/10 : The story's concept was interesting, the opening scene really draws you in (its a shame they couldn't continue this throughout the whole film) and gets you curious. However, the story just turns out to be boring with an excessive amount of flashbacks. Although, the latter still doesn't help the viewer relate to the characters like when people died I really was just like 'oh'. I really wish they had spent more time on character development because there were some real bad ass female characters that sadly didn't have a lot of time to shine. I kept waiting for something interesting to happen even the so called 'plot twist' really did nothing for me I just was like 'oh' lol. The CGI on mars was good but the cockroaches I wish they'd been more scary looking they just looked sad and kind of harmless. The action scenes were the only good thing for me about this film they were really good actually but I'd exchange those in a heartbeat for a more interesting plot. Oh and I don't think I really mentioned this but the female characters were really good in the sense that they never expected any guy to save them they were really strong and independent which was very refreshing!

Acting/Cast 6/10 : The acting was okay there was no-one that was glaringly bad. I was so excited about the cast btw because Yamapi and Emi and Yamada but they failed to impress me or really add anything. HOWEVER, Oguri Shun really outdid himself with his characterization, I almost didn't recognize him! I was really impressed with him ( I don't know why he is a phenomenal actor). You could really see the effort he took with his mannerisms and tone from the moment he stepped out the hovercraft lol. I was almost wishing he'd played his character a little more crazy and eccentric just to offset the boring mess of everyone else! (Btw why were people randomly speaking English I was so confused lol!)

Music 1/10: Was there music? I almost wish there had been noticeable good music maybe it would've of spiced up the movie a little bit! Kind of like suicide squad the movie sucked but at least they had good music!!

Rewatch Value: Yeah its a no for me! The story isn't interesting enough for me to re-watch and if I want to watch a sci-fi movie similar in set-up to this one I'll just refer to Ridley Scott can't go wrong with Aliens!

Overall 6.5/10: The plot wasn't interesting but the action scenes were a majority of the film which helped a lot. So basically watch if you really like action and don't care if the plot is boring and not interesting. But if your watching for the actors honestly DONT i promise you they have better and more note worthy works then this film. However, if your a big Oguri Shun fan and want to see another example of his awesomeness , (albeit wasted on this film) go for it! Overall the story had such an interesting concept I just wish it would have been executed better!
