SPOILER FREE: This is a must for suspense/psychological drama lovers. The plot is quite intriguing and the acting was really good. Masaki Suda was amazing (again) and the plot is full of twists that keeps the viewer on the edge. This series was highly entertaining and it was easy to watch. The death of Reina is a mystery to all and the viewers try to understand what will happen next. It wasn't perfect, but it was still powerful.MAJOR SPOILERS!!!
From the beginning, this series shows the effect that social media have on our society. The drama gives us, each episode, a new clue about the main case and as viewers we try to uncover the crime/suicide of Kageyama Reina. The truth is slowly revealed and as a person who watched the show I expected a great conspiracy or something even if the actual reason is something that is shown -one way or another- in the first episodes.
This show was a message to everyone in a society that can't live without social media. Almost everyone has one account -or more- on sm and it takes away a part of our lives.
The ending was brilliantly filmed as Hiiragi talks on the camera, about who the real killers are pointing to everyone who is watching the series and therefore uses social media. A harmful word -intentional or not- can cause great damage to someone even if that person doesn't know us personally. The anonymity of social media gives everyone the opportunity to give their opinion no matter how harmful that can be. I loved the comments that Hiiragi received while he exposed the truth, as it was the most realistic reaction that could happen. It is not only that some can't accept the truth, but the most terrifying thing is the ones who don't understand that they did something wrong. It was great to show that the purpose wasn't to stop what we call cyber bullying, but being able to change even one person. As someone said if we want to change the world, first we must change ourselves.
To everyone who watched this - including myself - this is a great opportunity to double check before posting anything and thinking before talking, because our words can really be the knife on someone's hand.

Hiiragi sensei is an amazing character, my fav of all time. Such a deep character.
Loved the story, you need to rewatch this drama to really understand it, and to see all hints!!!
Love the cast, these young actors/actress will be great in future roles. Finally some new good faces.
Masaki Suda was a monster... they choose one of the most brilliant j-actors.... such a versatile actor. In the last episodes he was outstanding. He need to win an award for this drama, no this drama need to win a lot of awards.
Loved the music <3 This played such a big part in this drama. And loved the ending <3

Pros-At its bare minimum, 3-nen is a timely critique of cyber bullying, herd mentality and the damaging nature of false accusations, applicable to not only Japan but to those who inhabit online spaces or social institutions- so, everyone in other words. It demonstrates how on the internet, malicious, often fabricated rumours can spread like wildfire to life-destroying effect, and how the collective can mercilessly oppress the individual until they simply break. It is an important reminder that human-induced tragedies like suicide aren't the responsibility of one person but many; and that remaining complacent towards bullying is tantamount to condoning it. So really, the series itself can be described as a long and important lesson that directly implicates the viewer in its didactic purpose.
-Unlike its awful, conspiracy-based successor 'Nippon Noir', 3-nen succeeds, for the most part, in its twists and turns, creating an urgent, exciting plot that keeps you guessing. From the beginning, the stakes are set high and the moment that Hiraagi announces the doors are locked, you know that this series really isn't fooling around.
-Credit where its due, I like Shogo Muto's decision to make Hiraagi a former Tokusatsu suit actor/ stuntman. Not only did the screenwriter pay homage to prior series Kamen Rider Build (albeit in a rather self-important way), it gave reasonable explanations as to why Hiraagi is a skilled fighter, can handle explosives and is inspired to impart values of justice, empathy and personal change onto his students.
-Casting was a mixed bag, but there were standouts. Suda Masaki delivers, as usual, a compelling performance as the enigmatic Hiraagi. Suda bounces from from playful enthusiasm to merciless rage, and then to heartfelt sincerity with the flexibility of a rubber ball, though bordering on overacting as per usual. Nagano Mei's characterization of the class captain was realistic, especially in her emotions of fear and regret. Tomita Miu was a welcome presence in retrospect, but I do find problems with her inclusion (see cons). And who can hate Mori Nana?
-Liked the opening. The morning dance routine was pretty sweet too.
Cons
Having only watched 3-Nen, NN and KR Build I'm no connoisseur of Shogo Muto's work. But having watched these three and read about his other series, I must say that his writing isn't terribly cerebral, is it?
- For one, hackneyed cliches and plot devices rear their ugly heads. Terminal illness, well-timed fainting, bad boys with soft sides, bedridden mothers, unsympathetic and incompetent cops, misunderstood yet well-intentioned protagonists, unrequited crushes, fat people as comic relief, clinging to the hand of someone falling off a tall building... I could probably think of more on a rewatch. One or two aren't bad per say, the problem is when they start to accumulate.
-And while I mentioned that the series has timely social commentary, I hate how preachy and self-important it is. Hiraagi's long rants, brimming with metaphors about daggers in hearts and intercut with scenes of the students silently crying are insufferably sanctimonious. This forced, contrived melodrama defeats the moments of off-kilter humor and dark comedy that added some levity to the series. And subtlety? Hiraagi must have bagged it at the start or blown it up in the first explosion. Crying, screaming, desk-slamming and oh, I almost forgot that uh- cyberbullying is bad, empathy is good and that we are all pieces of trash. Perhaps Hiiragi didn't say it enough times. To my belief, effective social commentary is woven into a work, not necessarily with complete subtlety but with at least some degree of complexity. 3-nen throws it like an angry, self-righteous punch to the face.
-Some of the acting was awful, particularly from the students. One who comes to mind is the idol fellow who was playing the belligerent dancer who picks a fight with Hiraagi, but this may be because he had an annoyingly large amount of screentime.
-Belief has been suspended. Too many times. Normally this wouldn't be an issue but since this work is intentionally set in the present day and in the real world, its unfeasibility becomes somewhat of a problem. The series falls to bits under the slightest bit of scrutiny, and I don't feel the need to explain its questionable aspects because there are too many.
-I believe this is the third time that I've written this but I really do want to point out this show's hypocrisy. It rambles on about bullying but perpetuates it by making a mockery out of the token 'fat' character. Not cool.
I hate using the word 'overrated' but I hate hiding my convictions even more. 3-nen a gumi, while relevant and entertaining, is overrated. 6.5/10

There's suspense, mystery and everything. This was very interesting and enjoyable to watch and I binged it in two days? It keeps you on the edge of your seat and all you do is hope for the best for all of these students. Suda Masaki is too talented, honestly, I felt immensely in awe of him every scene he had.
The story really packs a punch, so ready yourself before clicking play. It will make you think.

Such a plot twist, the reason of Kageyama's incident. At first I thou it is really the end after he got the culprit, but whose can predict that the ending is like that?? Great Twist~
And how can he put all the bombs at the school without being noticed by everyone?? hahaha. This is great!
What I like about this film is, the story, the timeline, the cast, and every plot twist at each episode. Also my favorite Kawaei Rina <3

Masaki Suda is so fine, like he is one of the best actors in his generation. An excellent performance by him is expected! He pulled of Hiiragi's character very well. As usual Japan dramas actors (even minor acts) do a great job to make the drama alive.

As a fan of suspense drama's i was quickly hooked on this and binge watched it in 1 day. The story was deep and filled with twists. You could hate some characters at the beginning of episodes and totally feel different about them towards the end. It was a beautiful drama with a messages also relatable to todays society!
Of course it is still a Japanese drama ( so some characters can 'act' a bit over the top) but that has never bothered me and i think the acting fitted this drama and made it even more touching. Especially Suda Masaki's acting was Top-notch!
If you wanna watch a beautiful, emotional and deep story about the influence of others on each other's lives, i highly recommend this drama!

I was looking for a perfect drama that could introduce me to Japanese dramas. The one that wouldn't disappoint me and make the first impression a bad one. And certainly, after reading through a "2019 wrap up" article (thanks to the one who wrote it) I found - Mr Hiiragi's Homeroom, and it couldn't have been more perfect.It was something unusual and different from what I was used to. And much more dramatic, like very dramatic at some points (for real)
The initial episodes were confusing, I was trying to wrap my mind around everything that was happening. The plot was building up and so was the mystery around it that I couldn't help but be curious about everything. I wanted to know the conclusion of it all. Why did he take his students as hostages? What is the point behind it? What are his reasons? And will the answers justify everything? Or will it be a disappointment at the end. And even though the cast overall acted brilliantly, the initial episodes seemed a bit heavy on drama, sometimes forced even, and less convincing to me for some reasons. But gradually the plot strengthened, it kept me on edge till the very end. And somehow with time it only got better and better in terms of both the plot and the characterization. There was a development with each episode. It was really emotional to see the students who were so adamant, stubborn and rebellious transforming into someone who was wise and considerate.
I thought Hiiragi was going too far with his motives, but now that I think about it, his roughness was instrumental in bringing about such a drastic change in his students. It all made sense!
The story became too good towards the end (the final episodes are my favourite)
The acting became less dramatic and more genuine with time.
The constant appeal made by Hiiragi, the emphasis on "thinking carefully" and "change". The way he promised his students that they will know his reasons made me believe in him and hold onto him. His signature phrase "Let's think!" may sound a bit lame at the beginning, but in the end one realizes its importance and symbolism.
Masaki Suda is a brilliant actor. He has acted so amazingly in the drama that I almost wish to have a sensei like him. His acting is a gem. I couldn't stop watching. He even received an award for best actor for this and it is well deserved. Nagano Mei was so cute and cheerful but also nailed the emotional scenes!
It's not a perfectly crafted drama, it definitely lacks at some places. The editing is off and not the bestest, but despite everything, the message that Hiiragi wants to convey to his students is something so important and something that people tend to overlook in present time. And for that, to know his reasons and the conclusions, it is a MUST watch. Because once you reach the point where finally you'll get your answers, you'll feel that it was worth it after all.
The drama is much more than what it really seems. It is more than a crime thriller. Even after a few days of finishing it, I can still feel the impact of Hiiragi's words. So do give it a try!

Nothing is as simple as it may present.
I’m your local overanalyzer - trying to predict the twists, understand the plot and the motivations of the characters before the drama actually explains them is one of my favorite things to do while watching any show. So for a drama to make me give up and just enjoy whatever they throw at me, and it all actually making sense by the end - that’s a miracle. And 3 Nen A Gimi achieved that.I want to start with the best aspect - Suda Masaki’s performance. He ate the role, he delivered the raw emotions and the complexity of the character in literally every frame. Hiiragi Ibuki is a character you cannot get enough of. He was fascinating to watch. Trying to understand his motivations and goals and if and how “sane” his plans are - all A+ entertainment. The duality between being a strict teacher and compassionate adult never felt like a contradiction.
One could think - how can a drama that takes place in basically one room for 10 days be engaging? Will it get boring? No, it won’t. Each episode delivers a side story of students that are being hostages, while also adding layers to the overall plot. It’s a perfect buildup with many great twists. At some point you won’t trust any new revelation, doubt every scene, as you know there is more to it than the eye can see.
I already talked about Suda Masaki’s amazing performance, but the whole cast did just as well. I was quite impressed with the students - that’s a large group of young actors and actresses, some misdeliveries would not be surprising, and yet we got none of that here Each and every cast member did exactly what the role required of them to do.
That said, even if I loved the overall plot and the performances, I do think one of the last scenes and revelations was an overkill in terms of the presentation. They really hammered the message in my face and there was nothing subtle about it. For a drama that is all about making us “think”, they really made sure to tell you exactly what you are supposed to think by the end, instead of giving the viewers opportunity to figure it out themselves - at least in terms of details and complexity. Honestly speaking, that’s probably the only complaint I have.
Overall, what an exciting and great story with a message that will forever be relevant and something worth reminding us from time to time.

3 Nen A Gumi was produced by NTV for a time slot reserved for low budget experimental dramas such as Anata no Ban Desu and Todome no Kiss. These dramas are youth oriented so they aim both to entertain and to educate. While education value of the drama's message may vary, an action-driven plot and the most popular actors of the hour are a 'must have'.
An entertaining experimental drama with a strong message often polarises the viewers. Is imperfect execution forgivable if the message is important? What can be overlooked for a chance to see a brilliant (or gorgeous) actor performing dramatic scenes with a flourish? The answers to these questions determine whether the drama is worth watching.
3 Nen A Gumi, in particular, features arguably the most talented actor of his generation, an unparalleled Suda Masaki. He clearly gives his all to a performance of the character he also helped create. Watching him act is a pure pleasure.
Unfortunately, there is a downside to Suda's heavy involvement in the script. While he gets to act many dramatic scenes that showcase his ability, his character is also a classic Mary Sue. Self-righteousness of the main character and his omnipotence are a hard sell and no amount of fainting spells or tears can change that.
There is only one person who is capable of standing up to the main character - the local police officer - and the confrontations between the two are among the most tense moments of the whole drama. The fact that Shiina Kippei can keep up with Suda's acting really helps. And here lies another problem of this drama - inexperience of the young cast.
Suda's acting, unfortunately, obliterates even the best efforts of the students' actors. Suda is not someone to dial off his acting just to make costars look better even at the best of times. Here, with no young actors of Kamiki Ryunosuke's calibre in the cast, Suda remains unchallenged throughout the drama.
Another problem of the story is heavy-handed moralisation. The message of the drama is brilliant and timely. But it's delivered in a way that puts the viewer in the position of a student who has long since figured the problem out but has to listen to an overdrawn explanation given by a self-important smug teacher.
Many trappings of the drama (hypocritical levity of the people outside of the classroom or constant cuts to some recorded videos) look rather pretentious without bringing much to the story.
There is also a problem with male gaze which results in a fanservicey premise where one schoolgirl stalks another because that schoolgirl looks like a woman in a classic porn. Thankfully, we are spared any sexual tension between the main character and the female lead mostly due to the actors (and Suda's agape which kills off any chemistry).
Having said all that, I readily admit that when the drama dials up tension, it gets really good. The setting constantly strains suspension of disbelief and is over-the-top but it would work fine if other flaws were less glaring. The same way the accusations of over-acting seem unfair considering the requirements of the genre.
Ultimately, the bold if very unrealistic premise coupled with expressive acting and strong message would work really well for a duration of a movie. Stretched over many episodes, though, the message devolves to self-satisfied pontification, the tension bleeds away, and the young actors show themselves in unfavourable light. Such is fate of experimental drama - it dared where others didn't even if with mixed results.

We say 'Actions speak louder than words but it doesn't mean that words have no effect'
THIS DRAMA IS WORTH MORE THAN JUST WATCHING IT IS MEANT TO BE FELT .This drama needs a lot of respect and admiration. The writer and director did a great job. It seriously is the best drama about cyberbullying i have ever seen . I really can't express how much this drama touched my heart, i cried almost in every episode ( maybe i am just being sentimental but you know what this is seriously the most i hv ever cried after watching the drama).
This drama shows how you might just say that cyberbullying are just words but they are not ,they are a lot more you know . I hv never experienced it but i still felt sooo much hatred towards it.
Some may say that in the end nothing changed but let's be honest he was able to change one person and that means so much. This drama showed reality and didn't sugar coat it, they showed that not all people can change but if you change one it is still a big achievement .Not everybody can tolerate your maliciously forged knife!!!!
