Oh wow

When you said you would do a recap I did not expect this.

You put in a lot of work and effort in these graphics and analyses. I commend you!

That's a nice wrap-up for the polls..

Though aside from Sweetest Romance, Bad Buddy also topped Favorite OST, Writer/Director, and both leads are also included as Best Actors. Also 5th place in Deserves a Shoutout.

So glad that Bad Buddy was part of different categories!! Totally deserved.

This is it - A wrap-up of the good and not so good in drama land for 2021. Do you generally agree with the poll results? Why and why not?

For me, being new to streaming (non-locally produced) dramas, i am still trying to catch up with the MDL Top Ranked dramas and have yet to watch many of 2021 released dramas. So my observations and comments are very limited for most of the polls. Thus please feel free to post your observations and comments at the forum here or at the respective polls. If any mistakes/typos are spotted, do feel free to correct as well. I might have inadvertently missed those with only a pair of eyes.

Notwithstanding, something that stands out for me is the lack of nomination for Korean actor Tang Jun Sang in neither the "Favourite Actor Discovered In 2021" nor "Best Actor of 2021". Tang Jun Sang plays lead roles in both top ranked "Move To Heaven" and the favourite "Racket Boys" that sweeps several positive polls in this End of Year Drama Challenge - 2021 Edition, including shoutout, best produced, surprise and favourite polls. I hope his characters is what viewers had in mind for nominating "Racket Boys" and "Move To Heaven" in "Favourite Character Of 2021". At the current age of 18, Tang Jun Sang with his outstanding acting aptitude and performance is poised for a phenomenal acting career.

Two polls i think that could be added are "All-time Favourite Drama" and "An Older Drama That You Have Rewatched In 2021" for viewers to indicate any dramas aired in the year or in the past that they have enjoyed. Those would be good go-to reference list of gems that new viewers like me can use to guide us in our drama land journey. What do you say? Any new polls to add or current polls to replace?

Finally, doing this while time consuming, has opened my eyes to not only the much talked about dramas but also potential hidden gems in drama land. Hope that your participation in the polls and perusal of the poll results open up new dramas and drama viewing perspectives for you as well!

Last but not least, look forward to your comments, including both the good and not so good ones, so it doesn't appear as if i am doing a monologue and we can exchange pointers :)

What attributes should a drama that surprised you have? Plot twists? Commendable acting of newbies? Simple, slice of life drama that touches you?

For me, I voted for Racket Boys not because it has a plot twist, but due to how the story and direction exceeded my expectations. Yes, partly because of the acting of the newbies too, but I never really thought that I will like the pacing and the story itself. And even though badminton is one of its core element, you really don't have to be that knowledgeable in order to relate with the drama.

Racket Boys is now my 4th favorite Korean Drama of all time..

Oh nooooo... Tang Jun Sang deserves to be nominated at least...

In my case, I voted for Lee Je Hoon as favorite actor discovered in 2021 because of his performance in Taxi Driver and Move to Heaven, and I already knew Tang Jun Sang in 2020 because of CLOY. As for Best Actor, I voted for Nanon Korapat. I love his performance as Pran in Bad Buddy and at the same time enjoying his character San in Never Too Late. Totally deserving for getting the Best Actor title.

Though I never realized that Tang Jun Sang wasn't nominated in any of those categories. I would've voted for him if not for those reasons I've mentioned :(

 whatever:
Does that mean BL romance is exceedingly sweeter than straight romance?

BL is not necessarily sweeter than straight romance... It's just PatPran really lol and also OhmNanon's chemistry. Here's 2 minutes and 46 seconds proof of PatPran's sweetness (Apink's Mr. Chu FMV)

For the category discussion... It’s an annual challenge, so an all-time favourite drama category would become repetitive after a while. Because if a person’s pick hasn’t changed, then they’re just rewriting the same tweet every year (as this is originally a Twitter challenge) or if their pick has indeed changed, that means that they would write the same tweet for that day and the favourite drama of the year day.

With the proposed rewatched drama category, the issue is simply that I try to make all categories as universal as possible, and many people just don’t rewatch dramas. But I always change a few categories every year, so maybe I’ll think about it for 2022.

Thanks Annie for your encouragement and for explaining your considerations for categories in your yearly challenge! Will DM you on other suggestions for your consideration.

Thanks Raikntpn for pointing out the other top 5 spots that Bad Buddy bagged! I should have gone down all the polls, my bad! :(

Agree with you on both Racket Boys exceeding my expectations and Tang Jun Sang being inadvertently sorely missed out in the polls. As a sports drama, i never expect Racket Boys to touch me at all. I watched it because i was impressed with Tang Jun Sang's performance in Move To Heaven, and also Kim Kang Hoon in Mouse as well. The sheer determination and grit of the players and coaches and the side arc of the village folks re-vitalising their village and thwarting the plans of the rude, money-spinning urbanites are so gratifying.

This was a really cool wrap up.  Thank you for doing this. It seems like a lot of the results were the same handful of popular dramas.  While a lot of the top results weren't what I voted for, I do see why they were on the list and many of them I would've voted for had I not been limited to one vote.
