They are not sparing me... the stress

Oh, they are not sparing me! The sheer panic I felt for them when the Emperor visited her while Xiao Duo was still hiding there... please, my heart can't take this! They keep taunting their fate! Now that we know the Prince of Nanyuan wasn't the one who killed the real Xiao Duo, I am genuinely hoping we can gain him as an ally to help take down the Emperor. He seemed actually quite a decent guy with his younger brother and as it sounded, their family should be the one sitting in throne. So, would it be a win-win situation, right?

Our leads are perfect, even with their flaws.

Grandma's advice is always the best and really helps Seori to appreciate life and to learn to love herself. It's very sweet how Seori often applies it to her relationship with Segye, which is usually one of the reasons their relationship stays so healthy. Our leads are perfect, even with their flaws. The way they always do those little things—which sometimes are not that little—to make the other feel better (or like Segye, sometimes for selfish reasons) just warms my heart every time. And what did I love the most? The fact that Segye accepts the stories behind his dreams and is completely willing to believe them, no matter how insane they might feel! All that for her.Mundo can go and kill himself. His presence is not welcome on my screen... And I applaud Grandpa for sending Mundo to the US! Well done!

The way leads care for each other...

Oh, they are finally bringing up the topic of Chu Zhao’s mother! I really want to know more, as it seems there’s some secret or mystery surrounding her. There's so much backstory they haven't told us yet! I am eagerly waiting to hear more history of Cangmu Stronghold and the truth about Chu Zhao’s mother; I suspect both could even be linked in some way. Giving us all those little moments of tension between the leads… My heart leaps every time they bring them closer. And the way they express their care for each other? C'mon, they really are not sparing me! They better give us a kiss soon!

Episode of surprises

I was shocked that the murderer turned out to be Yinlou’s father! I definitely didn’t see that coming. And the Empress just stabbed herself in the heart with a hairpin simply because Xiao Duo didn’t believe her?! She is so dramatic! Good riddance, lady! You won't be missed. Also, seeing Eunuch Sun become more and more uneasy around the Emperor is such a rewarding sight. He contributed a lot to turning the Emperor into the monster he is now, so if anything happens, he only has himself to thank. And the best moment of this episode? Definitely, Tongyun and Cao Chun'ang's "forced" marriage, and her confession of her feelings!

Was this really needed?

I guess this Demon Fox plot was something necessary for Empress Rong'an's character arc, but otherwise, I don’t really see much use for it. Yinlou and Xiao Duo were clever and quick-thinking as usual, and for once, the Emperor was actually useful for something! Overall, though, this felt a lot like a filler episode.

They're not caring about my nerves!

Even though they haven’t actually been caught yet, I don't think they are doing a very good job of hiding it or sneaking around! They always meet in such exposed areas that can be overlooked from quite a distance… At night, they have lanterns lit absolutely everywhere around them… And Xiao Duo is now just openly wearing Yinlou’s Fish Immortal token?! Do they not care about my nerves? I am so on edge whenever they meet because the Emperor or any of his men could easily see them. And Empress Rong'an has already put two and two together… poor Tongyun has even been dragged into one of her malicious schemes now. Oh, my… The only consolation is that Princess Hede is actually helping them now!

The most intriguing villain of this story....

I must say — I do love how they play with colours in some scenes, where part of the picture becomes greyish and only specific characters remain in colour. I think it’s a brilliant way of showing us what’s important in that particular moment. I only wonder why they chose those specific scenes to highlight that way. It’s quite amusing to see how Deng Yi, Xie Yanfang, Xiao Xun, and Chu Zhao can anticipate each other’s moves just by knowing what is supposedly happening with them. To be fair, Xiao Xun seems the least dangerous of the three; his game is already quite transparent. Deng Yi holds that element of unpredictability because of the child he always plays Go with — I still don't know who the boy is, what he signifies, or what his influence over Deng Yi really is. Meanwhile, Xie Yanfang is the hardest to read — he schemes against absolutely everyone, yet he shows certain qualities that make him quite sympathetic. For me, he’s easily the most intriguing of the three villains! I loved how Chu Zhao got some random lady to play her mother! But to be fair, I am completely with Fu Jiu about that woman — she's suspicious. It's not just the stopped carriage, but also that extra line she added for the people questioning them. It will be interesting to see how everything continues now that Chu Zhao and Fu Jiu are away from the capital, far from the little emperor, while Deng Yi and Xie Yanfang play their power games back there and Xiao Xun is out for Chu Zhao's blood.

Shengsheng's music getting more popular

I loved how Shengsheng’s music was so popular for those auditions. I felt so proud alongside Qingcheng! Their little gatherings always bring me so much joy… and oh, how I want to be able to taste some of Qingcheng’s cooking! Everything always looks so delicious! I really missed having some Zhou Zheng and Xiaoxing scenes, though!

My little joys of this episode

Is General Chu Ling already suffering from the poisoning? I thought the poisoned pastry was sent to him only after Chu Zhao married Xiao Xun… All three of those guys are just scheming their own schemes while trying to scheme with the other ones too... I just have to sit back, watch and see which plans will fail and which ones will succeed... there are so many plans now that overlap with other ones and then cancel some out.... And the "pleasant" exchange of words between Deng Yi and Xie Lanfang? I actually kind of lowkey enjoyed that. But what I loved the most in this episode? The cooking scene! Fu Jiu was so shy about correcting her hairpin. And I know why, because I have finally done my homework and learned what putting a hairpin in someone's hair means…

Family, games and ruined plans

Is Deng Yi playing Go and talking strategies with an imaginary boy? At least, it looked like that… Well, if that is true, then it creates a whole mystery about him for me, raising all kinds of questions. Why? Is it because of some trauma? Or maybe he has schizophrenia? Are there any other reasons? There’s plenty of possibilities. As for Chu Zhao… I actually waited for the day when some of her plans wouldn’t work so flawlessly. And that day came… and it came with quite a huge cost—the risk to Fu Jiu’s life and an escaped Xiao Xun. The way she just "rewarded" Deng Yi with a coffin to keep in his garden as a reminder was priceless! Deng Yi felt quite uneasy around her, and now he will definitely think twice before trying to make his own plans that don't align with Chu Zhao's.Fu Jiu/Xie Yunlai, Chu Zhao and Xiao Yu give me such family vibes... they are so sweet and adorable together! And he made them swings!

Plans and counterplans wrapped in red

Xiao Xun won’t be an easy opponent, but I must say—the tension throughout the episode was insane! At first, we see her master plan trying to trap Xiao Xun and then come all his counter-traps… it’s a master-level chess game. Chu Zhao manoeuvres that game perfectly! And I really want to applaud the little emperor. He silenced them with such a powerful emperor aura! Amazing job! Also, does the dominance of the colour red signify something? I know red is the colour of happiness, but it’s also the colour of war, right? Could that directly hint at the high-stakes political war that’s happening there?

I didn't foresee this to be so soon.

Oh, Chu Zhao ruined Xiao Xun’s plan in the very first episode after her reincarnation?! I expected it to be some long-term secret mission or something, but no… Instead, she used all her knowledge of the future for this one massive move! However, I highly doubt Xiao Xun won’t try to seize power again, so the question now is—how will she counter his next moves and prevent their deaths?Probably with the help of Fu Jiu! That man is so devoted to her, like a loyal bodyguard whose whole existence is just to protect her. And he’s from the Xie family, as I understood… so he’s actually a noble or something of that sort, then? The politics definitely took a grand entrance in this episode! At least she got Deng Yi on her side... right? Well, that's still to be established. Anyway, wishing all the best of luck to Grand Princess Chu Zhao for the rest of the drama! On a side note, the young actor who plays the emperor, Xiao Yu, is someone I’ve seen in multiple dramas recently—always playing the childhood version of the protagonist or a key kid character. I bet he will play many main roles when he grows up.

First episode leaves a very good impression

My first impression of this drama is very good! The world looks beautiful, and I especially loved the desert theme. For me, it associates with something rough, untamed, and quite unpredictable—something that’s hard to survive. Introducing our likely male lead, Fu Jiu, against that scenery looked absolutely perfect because he completely fits that vibe!Speaking of Fu Jiu, was he the same guy Chu Zhao saved from the whipping? It was hard to tell because of all the blood on his face in that scene, but I suspect he was. Either way, I think he's a keeper. He looked loyal to Chu Zhao, maybe even already had some feelings since that day when she saved him... However, Xiao Xun looked suspicious from the very beginning, and the way the whole backstory went down, it completely proved he couldn't be trusted. But the major star of this episode was definitely the female lead. Yes, she was naive and trusting, falling into Xiao Xun’s trap which led to her death, but all of that did a great job setting the stakes for her revenge against him. I definitely need a few more episodes to decide if I’ll stick with it, but man—revenge looks incredibly good on Chen Duling!

The Emperor has become a monster!

Whoa, what a monster the Emperor has become! I cannot even imagine what is happening in that mind of his. That scene where he puts a knife in Yinlou’s hand and then stabs her cousin about twenty times while holding it… Even Eunuch Sun flinched with each stab and wanted to turn away. Anyone would be terrified of that. And even so, the Emperor sat in front of Xiao Duo, praising how beautiful the blood-red colour looked on Yinlou’s face. He’s a maniac! The actor must be doing a phenomenal job portraying such a terrifying character. The Emperor's transition from that gentle and shy lantern-maker into this possessive, controlling and terrifying man has been so smooth, step by step, episode by episode. At this point, I am not sure if it will get even worse or not.Princess Hede’s realization and confrontation with Xiao Duo about his and Yinlou’s relationship was actually a low-key relief to me. I know she is kind of against it because the Emperor is her brother, but she is not reporting them either and even helped out when Yinlou went to meet Xiao Duo, so I believe she’s a possible ally there... If not now, then maybe when she realizes what a monster her brother has become. The end part was so heartwarming. Yinlou needed to feel that safety in Xiao Duo’s embrace. She’s been through so much and she probably will be put through even more terrifying moments. She even looked like an emotionless shell at that Buddha ceremony for a moment. I feel for her… oh, my poor girl. At least the cousin survived and is now safe and far away thanks to Xiao Duo.

They care for each other so much!

Oh, boy… if only Xiao Duo hadn't cared quite so much about Yinlou! She had such a perfect plan to trap Empress Rong'an, but instead, it got continuously interrupted by Xiao Duo’s men, bringing us a lot of comedy. To be fair, after all the heartbreak and tears we got in previous episodes, we really needed a more easy-going and comforting one, so I am very grateful for that! And even more so, in the end, she still managed to do what she wanted, treating us to even more laughs. However, I don’t think the answers she got helped that much, even if they did help in general. I know Xiao Duo now suspects Empress Rong'an of being his brother’s killer, but I don’t think she’s the one. Otherwise, how could her obsession with Xiao Duo be explained? Or… nah, I don’t think it is her.But what I do wonder about is—why didn't Xiao Duo check that entry journal at any point during those six years? Was it because he was just very focused on the Prince of Nianyang and checking this didn't cross his mind? But knowing how Xiao Duo's mind works, I think he would have checked EVERYTHING.Regardless, what worries me now is—was the blood from Yinlou’s mouth faked, or did she drink poison for real to distract the Emperor away from Xiao Duo?
