I was flipping through the comments here, trying to escape the day's news, and I see something that sticks out…
I'll admit that I'm a bit like Smeagol when it comes to my shiny precious CQL/GDC and its fandom.
My preciousssss. *covets the precious shiny things* *glares menacingly at those who would dare tarnish the shiny precious things*
Ahem. XD
Anyway, I've spent a fair amount of time perusing other discussion boards over the years and this one is quite tame. Sometimes there are harsh words tossed about, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing since I've yet to see it get really out of hand here. (Seriously, I hang out it some political forums and those can get wild.) If someone expresses their dislike and they get smacked by a passionate fan, I'm pretty good with that as it is an expression of bearing the natural consequences for their actions. I also appreciate that there are fans who advocate for peace and tranquility since civility is important too.
As for me... well, I have a natural inclination toward sarcasm peppered with a bit of humor. I also enjoy a bit of intellectual sparring, even when an opponent brings inferior weapons to the battle. I don't actually intend to offend people, but I also know that it happens.
*hurls handfuls of glitter at ChineseDramaFan*
Sorry, you don't deserve anything from my bucket of insults. o(*^▽^*)o
OMG! That would be something that may help the world stop fighting each other (I wish, sigh!). I'm holding my…
Lan Zhan could have flashbacks of Wei Ying. Or he could appear in his dreams. Maybe that's why he kept searching for WY. Maybe LZ went silently crazy during those years.
" For me it's quite clearly a natural progression towards a facet of equality. So male POV's are normal for you but it won't be for future female generations which is a good outcome surely?"
Equality is something that must be striven toward, it's not something that naturally occurs through the passage of time. It happens through continuously raising awareness and making deliberate changes in the way we do things and the way we view things. That includes encouraging others to open their minds to perspectives that are different than our own.
"The idea some people that have replied to me have that not enjoying it makes you a bigot seems more intolerant than anything I've inferred."
Well, you did decide to make a comment complaining that all the talk about BL pretty much ruined your desire to watch the show in the middle of a forum where people actively support the BL flavor of the drama. Maybe you're a newb to the whole "posting an opinion on the internet thing" but it's really the type of comment that begs for reply full of ire. Are you a bigot? That might be a bit harsh, I suppose. However, after a number of exchanges with you, I do feel you lack a certain awareness of the sort of inferences people will make about you based on the views you hold.
As for The Untamed: since you didn't pick up on any BL moments between the main guys in Nirvana in Fire, it's possible you won't pick up on it in The Untamed either.
This is off-topic but the first chapter of the manhua adaptation of Tian Guan Ci Fu (MXTX's third novel) is out…
OMG I didn't realize this manhua was already being translated. I just read the first two chapters of this on manga rock and WOW! breathtakingly gorgeous is almost an understatement! So excited to see this out!
(ノ^_^)ノ Exciting! I knew I couldn't be the only one who submitted a request to Netflix for this :D Also, I…
There are small things that annoy me about Netflix translations, but that's only because I've watched my share of CDramas so I know the terms for things like little/elder sister/brother or other terms of endearment. When Netflix doesn't translate affection nicknames and instead put's the character's proper name, it make me grumbly for some reason. LOL
The Untamed will be released on Netflix!source: https://www.gamersky.com/news/201910/1231123.shtml?tag=wap
(ノ^_^)ノ Exciting! I knew I couldn't be the only one who submitted a request to Netflix for this :D Also, I saw a screenshot that showed the description as saying this: In a magical world of inter-clan rivalry, two soulmates face treacherous schemes and uncover a dark mystery linked to a tragic event in the past.
Did you read that?

SOULMATES
I will totally die if that's how the summary actually shows up on Friday. XD Can't wait to rewatch again! Even though Netflix translations might drive me a little batty....
Your confidence in how normal you believe you are is very fascinating to me. How exactly do you define normal? Where does the concept of normal come from?
You say you prefer a male point of view. Does that mean that you purposely avoid female points of view? Do you feel that there's no value in seeking that sort of entertainment, or is it too intellectually taxing for you to engage in? I'm asking these questions because I am honestly curious.
As a female, I don't actually have as many options as you do in finding entertainment with a female point of view. There are a lot of statistics out there that show the significant imbalance there is between male vs. female driven entertainment. Even if there is a female lead, the odds are likely that she is portraying a character that has been created from a male perspective. So while you have been conditioned by society to believe it is normal to seek out entertainment that you relate to through a male perspective, I have also been conditioned by society to believe it is normal to view things from a male perspective as well. Your normal and my normal are two different things, you see.
This male dominated world is also the reason that boy love entertainment exists, by the way.
That brings us back to the issue of watching The Untamed. You don't think you'll enjoy it because of the boy love potential. There are many other reasons to watch the drama, but this has been a specific point that you have mentioned as being a reason not to watch. You say it's not because you are uncomfortable with it, but you are clearly avoiding it because it is different than your preferences. Is avoidance the same as intolerance?
I just thought of another similarity that I have to point out as to why people would recommend The Untamed to those who liked Nirvana in Fire. Lin Shu is totally devoted to Prince Jing and is determined to help him win the throne. In the same way, Lan Zhan is totally devoted Wei Ying and is determined to help him find the truth about the past. Both relationships are portrayed as being deeper than your normal friendship.
If you like Nirvana in Fire strictly because of the political intrigue and what you want to watch is another drama like that, then you might look for the political intrigue genre tag. Note that The Untamed doesn't have that tag, even though there are some political aspects to the drama.
I chose to watch Nirvana in Fire because of the historical and wuxia drama tags. I also chose to watch The Untamed based on those two things. That overlap may not be enough for you, but it was for me and there are plenty of other people who are similar in the way they choose dramas.
You may drift toward shows with characters you relate to, but I am the opposite. I want to see things from a different point of view in order to understand the world from different perspectives. Additionally, I don't think you understand the concept of sexism, but I won't go into it here. I will say that I think it would be good for you to engage in more entertainment with characters you think you'd have a harder time relating to as it would help broaden your horizons.
If someone were to draw a Venn diagram for these two shows, there would be an overlap that includes things like the historical setting, the wuxia aspect, and the fact that it's a top rated drama. Do you feel like people who enjoyed Nirvana in Fire wouldn't enjoy The Untamed?
Also, you keep bringing up the BL aspect of it as being the problem for you and now the idea is too ingrained in your head. Does it make you uncomfortable to see a relationship between two men? If so, why does that make you uncomfortable? I'm just curious.
All this talk about boy love has completely put me off wanting to try this as that's just not something I'd enjoy…
Ok, so I'll be serious for a minute and say that you should check it out. I mean... surely its super high rating has you just a teensy bit curious, right?
If you have never seen a rabbit in your life or have seen very few of them, you'd probably say that it's a picture of a duck since your brain is going to process it based on your prior experience, knowledge, and even your preference. It's fine if you only want to see it as a duck even if other people see the rabbit. Nobody is wrong since it's both.
Likewise, The Untamed can be watched as a show about two best buds by those who want to see it that way, but if others want to see the BL aspect because of reading the novel or enjoying that type of relationship, then that's not wrong either.
As for me, I'm definitely gonna say that the drawing is a rabbit. I won't argue if you say it's a duck if that's what you really want to see. Still, the rabbit is waaaay cuter.
The mass amount of CQL/XZ/WYB/MDZS profile pics warms my heart
Indeed! I wonder... should I friend everyone who has one and see if their personal feed also includes more CQL/MDZS stuff? That should totally be a thing. :D
I know, right? All the things you've mentioned in your post? *nods in hearty agreement* Seriously. It has literally…
:D I love that scene in my profile pic exactly for that reason. It makes me laugh because they are in a situation and still have that moment for love - kinda like how in the book they're in that crazy situation at the end and find that's a suitable time to confess their love to each other.
LOL I'm only on episode 8 or 9 so far. The love at first sight schtick with the woman relentlessly chasing after the guy isn't usually my thing, but the show made me laugh so I'm going to keep watching for now. Honestly, most romcom dramas have things that I can pick out that are degrading toward women to various degrees - some are way worse than others, so I guess I'll see where this falls on that spectrum. I usually shut off my brain while watching, so hopefully I'll avoid the potential brain damage ;)
There’s actually a good explanation for this. I am actually enjoying Go Go Squid because of the hilariously awkward situations and cheesiness. It is also mindless entertainment. There is no brain power involved in understanding the plot and it is not emotionally taxing. A lot of people prefer this kind of entertainment since it is a break from real life stuff.
On the other hand, The Untamed has some seriously passionate fans because it is NOT mindless entertainment. Thats's why so many of us can't get over it. It has captured our hearts and our minds in a way that we don't want to stop thinking or talking about it.
As much as I love to see the number of watchers grow, I also prefer that those who do watch it can appreciate what it has to offer as a drama. It is not mindless entertainment - you have to make some inferences about what's going on and you have to allow the plot time to unfold. If a viewer doesn't have the patience for those sort of things, then it's better for them to watch something that suits their entertainment preferences.
Here's a screenshot someone else has uploaded. It's exactly the same summary I see.

It's the small things that make me happy.

It will be interesting to see what kind of translation differences there will be.

Me: Naw. I'm watching other people watch that show. I won't start another rewatch yet. I'll get to that on Friday when it shows up on Netflix.
