The first episode throws some people because it literally drops you into the middle of the story. You are supposed to wonder what the hell is going on and then keep watching to find out. I love this kind of story telling so I was hooked from episode one, but others aren't keen on the confusion and I can understand that.

Reasons to keep watching -

Satisfy your curiosity: If you watch it, then you'll either understand the hype around it or you'll decide it just isn't for you. You won't be left wondering what all the fuss is about.

You aren't alone: There are A LOT of people who have said the same thing about the first episodes, but as they watched more, they got emotionally drawn into the drama, which is where it gets you. If you want to get on an emotional roller coaster, hop aboard. You are in for a ride. That said, the angst to fluff ratio is well balanced.

Proven statistics: Approximately 8 out of 10 people who rated it loved it. Not just like, but LOVED, according to the ratings. A steady sixty percent scored this 10. This means that odds are pretty well in your favor that you'd enjoy it if you stuck with it.

Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms and Ashes of Love center on the romance aspect of the story whereas The Untamed has broader themes associated with it. I loved TMoPB and AoL, but I don't know that I'd consider them similar to TU.

Not exactly sure what you mean by mainstream since the popularity of The Untamed in China far exceeds both TMoPB and AoL according to Douban and various other reports. The Untamed IS different, though, which is one of the reasons that a lot of us love it so much.

The world-building necessary for a story like The Untamed does take time. I love the process of world-building and take in everything the drama has to offer on it so I never feel that the pacing is slow or the dialogue unnecessary since it adds to my understanding of the world and its characters. However, it's not uncommon for people to have little patience for these sort of details which makes some feel like it's a slow start.

Cult? Oh... you mean our Suibian Ｃｕｌｔivation Sect. Sometimes we throw swords to protect our little Rabbit Hole because The Untamed is our holy drama and we feel that it should be watched with utter devotion and reverence.

Don't mind us :) We've had to stab a few trolls lately so we're a little jumpy.

So we're all stat nerds, aren't we? LOL Despite some of the weirdness in the numbers (like the difference between the "scored by" number and the "score statistics" number) I think these stats tell an interesting story. Modern dramas tend to be easy to relate to - they don't require viewers to understand much beyond what they already know in order to enjoy them.

Historical/fantasy dramas, however, require viewers to understand a world that is much further from reality so the threshold for patience in the story-telling and world building is higher in order to enjoy shows like these. A fair number of people just get frustrated by it and I have little doubt that a certain percent of those 1 ratings come from that frustration - when a person doesn't understand something, it makes them feel not smart which can make a person angry and vengeful.

Naw. It's been a super crazy busy week in life and work. I'm able to pop on here and read - unless I have no internet, I always check this page - literally, when I type the word "The" on my phone, "Untamed" is the first suggested word to pop up. XD Commenting is harder to do because I'm interrupted about ten thousand times a day due to the nature of my job, so I end up closing my app mid-thought and lose whatever it is I wanted to say. :)

I know we all liked seeing that 9.4 rating, and, yes, a few extra low ratings that suddenly popped up knocked it down a bit. Still, it would take quite a lot to knock it out of first place on the highest rated list given the scoring of the next highest drama (which, if I calculated correctly the #1 drama scores 9.34ish rounded down to 9.3 and #2 drama scores 9.15ish rounded up to 9.2 ). It's also worth noting that 60% of the almost 3800 user ratings are a 10 for this drama - you don't really see that kind of percentage for 10 ratings on any of the other high rated dramas.

Until some other incredibly awesome drama comes out of nowhere to make everyone fall in love with it, I'm pretty confident that The Untamed will be #1 for a while. :)

I have managed to watch another drama in its entirety, but I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I should have and The Untamed partly to blame for it. My expectations are out of whack so I have to take extra measures to realign them so that I might actually appreciate dramas again.

Oh yes. At home, there are many foreign phrases that get tossed around for giggles. :)

You definitely should read the novel. The drama does a fantastic job of portraying their love for each other without crossing the censorship board, but the novel has all the fine details that enhances your understanding of their relationship. :) MXTX's other works are also highly recommended.

Oh dear. I just realized that I can read those Chinese characters which is a clear signal that I have spent way too much time watching untranslated videos with them in it.

I'd help you, but I'm stuck in that rabbit hole too. And if someone sent a rope ladder down for me, the only way I'd climb it is if I saw 王一博和肖战 in flashing lights at the top. Yeah. I'm pretty hopeless.
