I totally get you, I really needed some time to understand it and accept all those informations, China is one hell of a country with lots of important and huge happenings in the last century. Just keep it slow and watch whem you're in the mood cause it's drama that needs special attention and it's really different than all the others.
Hope you'll soon continue and learn more. There are some pretty heartbreaking scenes near the end, I was so invested and impressed by the acting specially by acting of his uncle, you'll see.

You should watch somw of his dramas really, you love China and you love good acting and smart script so these dramas are for you, well most of them for sure.
In China there are 6 official acents from various parts of country and it really sounds different when you're listening but Mandarin- official accent that is spoken in Beijing is the one that everyone knows, it's just actors need to improve it of they were born somewhere else, they really practice a lot. So they came up with that solution but not all the actors agree with that. Kai Kai and someother actors use their own voice and they speak really great. For example Wallace is from Taiwan and in Battle of Changsha he uses his voice and it sounds so beautiful plus he speaks Mandarin very good. ;)
