Always checking your horror movies to see if they are Butterfly safe. 🫣😄

I watched it on Hi-Yah! (Subscription). Might be available on InternetArchive though I don’t know if it’s subbed. It’s been restored and the pic and sound are good.

A lot of these old kung fu movies that aren’t Shaw Brothers were not cared for but largely considered disposable.…
I waited years for Viki to have the subbed version of NIF. I refused to watch the dubbed version. My husband watches dubbed versions of Norwegian and German dramas, drives me crazy. Not to mention watching the Ip Man films dubbed. My ears! 😫

These old kung fu flicks are the exception because there often isn't an alternative. I don't grade off for deteriorating conditions , cropped images, or bad dubbing because it's not the maker's fault. If I want to watch an obscure Lo Lieh or Angela Mao film, it's the price my ears have to pay.

I can't imagine watching a Chinese movie with English dubbing.
A lot of these old kung fu movies that aren’t Shaw Brothers were not cared for but largely considered disposable. Sometimes the only surviving copies to be found have been dubbed. Even of the ones surviving without dubs many have been cropped, may have multiple subs competing for the screen or not even be legible because the white subs are faded on a faded film and run off the screen. I hate the dubs but sometimes even they are better than the alternative for international viewers.

I’ve seen movies that the dubs may suddenly go to German or another language and then back to English again. Or revert back to Mandarin or Cantonese with no subs. 😵‍💫 But yes, the dubs are annoying. Thankfully, they don’t try to use a “Chinese” accent but it’s also jarring when you hear a Brooklyn, Spanish, and/or American southern accent all in one film. 🤦🏻‍♀️ There is one team that has dubbed a lot of kung fu films that sounds like maybe two men and one woman doing all the voices in a “neutral” accent. That’s assuming there’s only one team, some movies have multiple layers of dubbing. 😆

And then there is the voice dubbing for actors who speak either Cantonese or Mandarin and are dubbed in the other. And the dubbed version is an octave higher than their real voice.

To watch these old niche films one has to accept the flawed, very flawed,
nature of their condition. 👐🏻

I normally don't condone violence to animals but hacking of snakes is A-OK for me!
Not a fan of snakes or snake killing and the last few kung fu flicks I’ve watched had snake scenes. 😖

Almost to the end of my marathon, hoping to avoid more serpent violence.

I think my impressions are very close to yours. Pearl was a real bore that was misnamed - there was nothing chaotic…
There were times I wondered if it was a translation error. 😄

Rarely do I read a review that is so informative all all aspects of a film. It's 4:3-0AM and the tears are streaming…
I'm glad it could bring you a smile. 😄

I haven't seen Noryang yet. It's in my Prime to be watched list. Did you watch it? Currently in the midst of my martial arts marathon. Hi-yah!

Still on Tubi as of this writing. It’s also on YouTube. All of the versions I checked were dubbed in English. :/

On The Rangers Mar 18, 2025
Title The Rangers
Currently available on Tubi as Lady Whirlwind Against the Rangers. To add some confusion, Tubi is currently using Angela Mao’s Lady Whirlwind poster. A completely different film.

On The Deadly Duo Mar 17, 2025
The Deadly Duo is not currently on Tubi in my region. I rented it on Prime, it is currently not available for free. Be aware there is another Deadly Duo from 1983 that stars Chen Guan Tai. Two Great Cavaliers (1978) is also called Deadly Duo with Angela Mao. Prime's is only available dubbed in English. :/

Review Ong Bak 2
I remember this, it had terrific fight scenes indeed.
He was incredible to watch. Probably should have done some strategic editing and combined 2 and 3 instead of making 2 films.
