lol, no problem, and Attack on Titan was terrible. some more recs include Osozaki no Himawari (currently watching and it's half funny half dramatic... very real), Itazura Na Kiss Love in Tokyo (last picture of article), Ikemen Desu Ne, Nobunaga Concerto, From 5 to 9 and Last Cinderella off the top of my head :D

Great to see an article on Japanese content! I wouldn't have picked many of the same "starter" shows…
I couldn't imagine anyone finding RMPW dull but i have met a few who shared a similar opinion concerning Bitter Blood (i think what people really and truly appreciated about the show was the humour and style)... well it's nice to meet you! Tbh I practically racked my brains trying to pick different dramas so that there would be at least one that could suit each individual who read this article's taste. Since you agree with one, this implies i may have succeeded :DD Yay!

As for your second paragraph... omg. THAT IS SOOOO TRUE.I didnt discuss the reasons in depth BUT if i had i guarantee i wouldnt have written it as well as you.

What i would add is that i think one of the reasons why the japanese fandom is (in my opinion) stronger than other fandoms is that - undeniably - there exists a consistent (it does fluctuate sometimes) and large popularity... If you look beneath the surface you will find many underground sanctuaries and japanese fandom communities AND the fact that you need to be dedicated enough to actually get what you want... at the end of the day shows we are stronger than other fandoms in our resolve to actually watch and enjoy these dramas. As you said if we went back to square one and Korea retracted their licenses i'm sure the korean drama craze would eventually fade/level out.

The same thing applies to Thai drama... it's just that they arent at the same level of popularity so that makes it even harder to find English subs. Although it is a growing fandom.

As sylwia said it is just live action adaptations and both Nodame Cantabile and Nobunaga Concerto are adaptations from manga. Try Orange Days, Pride or Rich Man Poor Woman for romance. For family it's Tonbi or Wakamonotachi. If you want human/terminal illness try Koizora drama, Mioka, 1 Litre of tears or Boku No Ita Jinkan (the hours of my life)... Or even 'crying out love from the centre of the world' if you reallllyyyy want to be a puddle of tears (not that the others won't leave u sad, upset BUT somehow they make you feel thankful and hopeful))

This is exactly what I needed! I've been looking to get into Japanese dramas, and I wondered where to start. I…
Its a romcoms with a few melo moments. About a hockey captain who doesn't want a serious relationship and goes out with a girl who is still in love with her ex who abandoned her when he went abroad. It's about his team too. I strongly recommend Pride.

If you haven't already watched the opening credits: https://youtu.be/qpC8v_EJr3E
You can get a feel of the drama if you watch the OP :)

Hi guys I came here because I suddenly became interested in J-Drama. But as you know I'm not familiar with it.…
I wouldn't personally recommend Manhattan Love Story to a beginner because half of the jokes are influenced by Japanese culture. You would need to be experienced in Jdrama and Japanese to actually fully understand the drama.

If you get what I mean :)

I would recommend from the list above: Rich Man Poor Woman, Pride, Orange Days, Proposal Daisakusen and Hana Yori Dango :)

I second Nodame Cantabile...And Hana Kimi... But only if you like slapstick anime style acting. Even if you don't like slapstick too much try Hana Kimi, it's very very funny and worth it. Zettai Kareshi is adorable and funny but kinda sad depending on your ship.

where's that last pic from? can't google it atm
I actually really enjoyed the new adaptation of Itazura Na Kiss. Kotoko was not annoying at all. Instead she was cute and funny. I almost broke my laptop when watching the Korean Adaptation tho. She was horrendously written and portrayed there. I would personally recommend the new version of Itazura Na Kiss :)

Haha! Same same. Japan, taiwan then Korea. I watch more or less the same amount of Japanese and Korean dramas. I started watching a few Chinese last year and I've been quite entertained by Thai drama lately although I've been hovering around Thailand from a long time ago.

I have watched 9/15 dramas you listed and among those, Hanadan, Proposal Daisakusen & Bloody Monday are the best…
I agree with you. About everything you said. And ofc I watched bloody Monday properly. How could I resist not watching the sequel!! I rewatched S1 about a hundred times now. And Season 2 ep1's ending was a shocker. I thought it was a plot twist or something. Lol. I was in denial. I really enjoyed the Bloody Monday series... Falcon, Hornet Otoya and J. All this time and I remember these characters. Especially baby Kamiki... Ah he is a splendid actor!

let me include my list ... Jdoramas for jdorama first-timers :D http://mydramalist.com/list/q1XzglP3 it is ignorance…
Lol, i'm glad i've never experienced this. I watched Hana Kimi japan, then Hana Kimi Taiwan and then You're Beautiful. So my first 3 dramas were from Japan, Taiwan and Korea. I didnt have any bias at the time. My bias formed after watching several TV shows from each country. I think each country has their strengths and weaknesses. Japan's biggest strength is diversity in every way. Korea's dramas are more glamorous and have a very strong superficial beauty about them. Sometimes it annoys me that they have this fixation, especially the fact that they are always talking about looks, colour/shade of skin and financial situation. Whereas Japanese dramas rarely refer to superficial things and outward appearance like shade of skin or the latest fashion and tend to focus on the more emotional aspects of a person. I'm not saying Japan doesnt have this... oh yes they do. Just look at their high school live actions and all they talk about is the Ikemen most popular guy. At the end of the day, what I'm trying to say is there's variety and its not all superficial.

Just my 2 cents.

I checked out your list and i'm currently watching Osozaki. Shimanto is so beautiful. One day i want to go to Japan and it's countryside!

Yamapi is one of my fav actors because of Proposal Daisakusen (i dont care what people say about his 'fish eyes' and so on... i think he's more than proven himself in both Proposal, Kurosagi and Code Blue). as for Bloody Monday... i remember back then i watched some of it without subs because i was new to dramas and i didnt know anything about downloading so i relied on online streaming sources. unfourtunately back then the online sources werent as good as today.
I haven't seen Last Friends and One Litre of Tears. But i really loved Atashinchi and Koizora. Atashinchi is sooo cute!!
To this day just saying Koizora hurts my heart. I loved the movie version and the drama version! both have a special place in my heart!

Your essay gets a grade A+.

Srsly that excuse of jdrama actors not being handsome enough is so ridiculous I don't even acknowledge it. Like... So you don't watch the Big Bang Theory coz Sheldon isn't a Hunk? Or you've never watched Mr Bean because he's not attractive. OR even better... You don't watch Asian drama coz they speak chinese... How do you understand it? The subtitles are too fast you can't watch THAT!

Love the skewed moral compass. I watch all sorts of Heros/Anti-heros (Zeni Geba)... Just not Adulterers. I especially hate the way it's a hot topic in Asian drama... Some even glamorising it. It's ridiculous.
