It was also frustrating when a drama had really high ratings and I'd watch it and find myself unable to find any redeeming qualities about it. It felt like there's something wrong with me. A major turn off is female dubbing voices. I tried watching a drama staring the actress that portrayed Ming Lan but then he started to talk and the dubbed voice made me want to slap her in the face (despite the fact that her character was strong and intelligent). I can get over dubbing in general but the squeaky, infantile voices they use for most female characters is infuriating -_- and that's just the start of my problems with C-dramas.

I've generally struggled with Wuxia and fantasy Cdrama. I don't think I finished any of those I've started. Mostly because they are so heavy on CGI and fantasy fights which I personally find extremely eye-roll worthy and cheesy, and because of dubbing with especially female voices (and characters in general) ranging from mildly irritating to infuriating and obnoxious. But that's my personal opinion and I choose not to lose hope :D This is why I loved The Story of Ming Lan, no dubbing, it's not overloaded with CGI and flying mid air fights. I still check out a few episodes of Wuxia and fantasy dramas if they seem interesting.

I can see how this drama can appeal to people who don't even watch Asian drama. It's such a rare gem. I looked up the writer of The Story of Ming Lan to see her other work because of how much I loved the drama and Battle of Changsha is definitely high on my to watch list. I'll check out All Is Well too!

I was hesitant because I rarely, and I mean RARELY, find Cdramas enjoyable, and because it was a long drama, but this one was really worth it.

I'm with you on this. The only version I managed to finish (miraculously) was he Japanese version which was the original that spawned all these remakes and consequently some of the most horrible tropes in Kdrama. I probably finished it because it was short and it was early in my Asian drama viewing days.

I loved this movie up to the middle and then it nosedived for me. I don't mind sad movies with terminal illness if they are done right but here it felt more like the writer was throwing a bunch of stuff to see what sticks. Here's what makes it different than A Moment to Remember which is tagged under Recommendations. AMTR straight out told us that this was not going to be a happy go lucky movie right from the first frame. They left the viewers with bread crumbs that something is not quite right with the heroine. Here, the second half felt like it came out of nowhere as they ran out of a story to tell so they just kept coming up with illnesses she can collect. It felt to me like they combined three movies into one. I would watch the movie again up to the middle and it would feel complete to me.

And that is why now I never start a Jdrama until the very last episode is subbed. Since I don't like watching raw, I'd rather not start it and have to wait anywhere from 2 weeks o 2 months to get each episode or have the last couple of episode not subbed for years. Let's hope we don't have to wait for years for the remaining episodes to get subbed -_-

I had the exact same thought several times in the 2 episodes. There are moments that she spaces out and I'm like... Oh, she's gone blind XD

So I just started the drama and within the first 16 minutes of the 1st episode, the FL was loud and sounded spoiled and petulant which got on my nerves. From the first scene, she is screaming at her maid and constantly complaining. When the maid tries to convince her not to run away and says that she'll be beaten to death if Xiao Tan disappears, Xiao Tan replies with "then let him beat you to death." Even if it's just a comedy, even if she thought that the maid wasn't serious, even if she had to run away, even if she was afraid for her life (which I don't think that was the case), that's just a very callous thing to say. There's a difference between being sassy and being annoying. Then Tan Er took over and seemed boring and lacking in personality altogether. From the little that I saw of the ML, he didn't seem any better, so at least that makes them a match made in heaven. So my question is, does she get a personality transplant within the next couple of episodes or should I move on to another drama? Is the FL going to continuously rotate between mcpetulant and mcsnoozfest or does mcpetulant mellow down in terms of petulance?

It's so hard to find a Chinese drama with good acting, it's so frustrating. I think the dubbing also doesn't help matters, it's usually so obvious to the point of taking me out of the story -_- Btw I was torn between this picture and Gong Yoo but this one captured my exact general mood :D

You said everything I wanted to say. I would like to add though that the main leads' acting was really good compared to the average Chinese dramas and they had good chemistry but by episode 11 I just couldn't get into the drama. I tried coming back to it a few months later. The drama couldn't keep my attention even after skipping through the episodes to get to the main leads' scenes.

The chemistry btw the leads was off the charts but everything else was a package of cliched and plot-holed snoozfest.
