Some controversial dramas are made for the sake of being controversial after that the writers goes wild swinging and if it hit it hits but most of the time they are wild misses. Most recent controversial dramas are like that even dramas written by Nojima Shinji himself. This 30 year old drama is totally different script was written first before the shoot so the intent was already there, actors being casted because they fit the characters but more importantly execution is superb from start to finish. The final monologue in particular still haunts me after years since I watched it. I will say this though I think the disgust and hate this drama got is normal as this is one of the saddest social commentary made for TV. Just facts for facts the reality is world is not black and white, life is not that simple, bad actions happen because of reasons and many years may have passed but our harsh society never change it still unforgiving as ever.
Same humor as minna esper dayo dramas alike if you like that kind of comedy you will enjoy this one. Ryuhei Matsuda and Nishino Nanase has great rapport I saw that in 0.5 no Otoko and they are still great here. Matsuda's "I don't give a fck face" suited the character perfectly and Nishino's usual cute clueless look compliments him well. What a great duo.
It felt it could work as your normal 9-11 episode slice of life drama where the main conflict is the plot for this movie. There are your side characters, the core theme and the vibe is not your usual heavy drama vibe. I checked the manga however I think this movie have different intention if it's age gap romance they will blatantly show it. You know there's that formula and it didn't fall to that, leads have zero chemistry. They would have cast a different male lead if that was their intention. It is more of a kinship relationship (master and apprentice).
2 1/2 - 3 hr shunji iwai movie is always a magnificent journey and the fact that the composer for lily chou chou movie composed songs for this movie made me more excited. Aina and Chara voice seems alike.
I didn't realize this is the same girl in baby assassins movie it must be the bangs. Go watch that after this you will see a totally different character. I haven't seen a drama that loves to troll its viewers as much as this one.
I think this girl is the new superstar in the making she can act, her face is very versatile, she can do well in any genre, but more importantly she got the charm the longer you look at her the prettier she gets.
With only 5 eps she couldn't dilly-dally with narrative, right decision to the point of matter there. My only…
Okinawan music was still present in this drama near the end of episode 3 for example, if you mean the english music that was american influence in okinawa. They not only show the traditional okinawan culture but the present day okinawa. Not just music but from okinawan martial arts to skateboarding, basketball etc.
This is like arakawa under the bridge with Kudo Kankuro element. The vibe is pretty much comedy with colourful and fun characters but just like what I thought human drama is there and can definitely get very depressing. Some scenes even shock me with how opposite it is compared to its overall tone. Each stories are social commentaries, superbly executed so each story bits just hits.
Nogi Akiko didn't go with subtle commentary jabs this time (aside from that 1 ep in MIU) she went with a solid straight punch. You could not choose a better title for this drama you may think it will only tackle one topic but goes beyond that, themes that are revolutionary for a Japanese drama and all of it will lead to one core theme which you will find in the title Fence. Solid acting overall and I like dynamic between this two leads the drama managed to show the beauty of the okinawan culture. Lastly there are some scenes that are hard to watch although not that graphic but still needs to be mentioned.
Quite possibly the best characterization I've seen for a female lead in a jdrama. The perseverance of the company to produce this car and the women who learn to love it. It maybe a made up connection but believable thanks to sensibilities that are common in jdramas. Wonderfully acted all throughtout with perfect pacing and that soulful ending song this drama is a zen to watch. My quintessential Japanese drama of 2023.
I came for aliens but got something moving/inspiring in the end. Aliens are just huge symbolic for this very familiar theme they have in the movie. Acting is kinda decent for these young actors and I like the cinematography as it's shows the beauty of Japanese country side.
These kids needs some milk or maybe since they are older make them run on the field and let the battle royale begin. The acting is kinda mixed you could really tell those with child acting experience. I get all the complains but that's just the style of this type of drama from Japan, mystery novel vibe, unrealistic, stagey, preachy, in your face and that's the point. There is some build up which hopefully will payoff later.
That trailer looks promising, Nojima Shinji is more hit or miss than Takashi Miike and his recent works are mostly misses. Iitoyo Marie looks very convincing in this role.
Certaintly looks very similar to Makjang from that Netflix trailer 🔥🔥🔥Makjang-esque Revenge drama here…
I haven't watched any but from the clips that I've seen and based on the description from people who watched it they feel makjang to me or even more exaggerated. Well that era is full of exaggerated dramas like sukeban series etc. their normal series with drama elements are also over the top those are the ones that felt makjang to me. Try searching "daiei drama" on youtube.
It is too old for my taste and the style is a lot different than the 90s I consider 90s - early 2000s jdramas the best. And I guess finding english subtitles for those series is close to impossible.
Nana mori would be master chef one day another role where she is a good cook. As expected it is very cliche but that kenshi x nimura sawa chemistry surprised me I hope those 2 will get more screentime as this drama progress.
So that game they are playing is real lol but I like that there is symbolism in that game in connection with the theme of this drama. Did they just pick any available random game and accidentally everything just match? crazy. Anyway those friends he gained in that game made him not lose his sanity (virtual friends) and in real life the foreigner konbini guy the only person he can talk to. This is a lot deeper than I thought it would be when I read the synopsis, there are other societal issues they tackle but it doesn't come off as preachy, more on the comedic vibe no over the top drama, just the way a great slice of life jdrama should be.
The most intense scene in history of Jdramas.
