A Republican drama that isn't for everyone

Wow, this was a fantastic Republican drama!

It had everything that is vital to a good Republican drama. A fantastic ML (who doesn't have to be good looking but it doesn't hurt), a story so gripping that you can't help but feel for the character, morally gray characters, evil characters, romance filled with angst, danger, revenge, death, war, etc...

It was a hard, difficult watch at times especially the horrible abuse Murong Qing Yi had to live through. The fact that he survived it was in itself amazing but that he didn't lose his mind or become some person hellbent on revenge because of it was simply a miracle. Not only was he hurt, tortured, treated cruelly by his enemies but by his family (and it started when he was a child!), the very people who were supposed to protect him. But honestly, when the FL came along she was no better, blaming him for things he had no control over, some of her scenes were rage inducing.

After watching Overdo, I am astounded at the amount of hate this drama has gotten. I believe a lot of watchers came in after Pursuit of Jade expecting the same kind of story. Gorgeous hero, gets the feisty girl, they win against all odds and get to live happily ever after. But Overdo is a Republican drama. It's not sunshine, roses and happy endings. Its bread and butter is angst, couples/families tore apart from the ravages of war, drugs, revenge, etc..

I've read a good portion of the hate was partly because of the AI intro... ummm... there are some dramas with cartoony intros or even some with the battles that are cartoony/drawn, etc.. because they're cheaper to make apparently. The intro isn't the drama... so skip it. I don't watch the intro, complete waste of time. I'd rather get to the drama.

Another reason, if not the main reason is because of the ending. Zhang Ling He has spoiled his fans. Unlike other actors (I'm looking at you Ren Jia Lun) he's never taken a script where he dies or that doesn't end well. In almost everyone of his dramas it's a happy ending and he usually gets the girl.

Overdo is the exception. And I think he must have taken this role to prove he is something more than just a gorgeous face. He doesn't need to be what the haters called the 'foundation general', or even the pretty boy that always has to have a happy ending.

Overdo proved one thing beyond a shadow of a doubt and that is Zhang Ling He isn’t just a pretty face; he genuinely has the acting chops to back it up. Any argument to the contrary is purely academic.


Would I recommend watching Overdo? You bet I would. If you love Republican dramas, if you like watching an actor prove that he is more than just his visuals, if violence, blood and death doesn't bother you, if you can handle cruelty, if angst is right in your wheelhouse then give this one a try.

But there is a caveat. If you don't like Republican dramas, if you absolutely must have a happy ending, if you can't watch abuse, death, cruelty, angst, war, etc... you might want to skip it. This isn't the drama for you.

Better Than Its Ranking Makes It Look

Honestly, I don't understand why Overdo is ranked so low. I almost got discouraged because of the ranking and nearly skipped it, but I'm actually glad I didn't. It's definitely not perfect, but it's nowhere near as bad as the ranking makes it seem.

I'll be blunt though the first few episodes can feel pretty boring. I wasn't completely invested at the beginning and I can understand why some people might drop it there. But once the story starts picking up, especially around Episode 15 for me, I became genuinely invested and wanted to know what was going to happen next.

One thing I'd seriously recommend is understanding the Republican-era setting before starting this drama. The drama doesn't explain everything clearly, so if you go in without knowing much about the historical/political context, some parts can feel confusing and painfully boring because you won't understand why certain things are happening. Once you understand the background, the story makes much more sense.

The acting was actually pretty good overall, but the drama can be really frustrating sometimes. There were moments where I genuinely wanted to yell at the screen because of the characters' decisions or the way certain things played out. Some of the writing choices made me question what the drama was trying to do, and there were definitely scenes where I felt the frustration more than the emotion.

And honestly, Murong Qingyi is definitely not Zhang Linghe's best role. I don't think the character suited him that well at all. Compared to his previous roles, Murong Qingyi lacked the impact, charm, intelligence, and depth that usually make Zhang Linghe's characters stand out. It's not that he acted badly I actually think he did a good job with what he was given but the character itself just wasn't strong enough. Zhang Linghe is much better when he's given a character with more emotional complexity, dignity, intelligence, and presence. Murong Qingyi simply didn't give him enough to work with.

Now let's talk about the part that absolutely destroyed me: my favorite characters literally ALL died. And I'm still bitter about it.

Some of those deaths were genuinely painful to watch, and there were episodes where I was just sitting there thinking, why are you doing this to me? But at the same time, I don't think their deaths were meaningless. Since the drama has such a strong patriotic element, these characters were willing to sacrifice themselves for the people they wanted to protect and for their country. Their choices were basically suicidal missions, and while it was incredibly painful to watch, I understood what the drama was trying to convey.

That doesn't make watching it any easier, though. If you can't handle watching characters you care about suffer and die, seriously prepare yourself before starting this. Some episodes were emotionally exhausting.

The production is probably my biggest complaint. The story had potential to be much more powerful with better execution, stronger camera work, and a more polished overall production. There were moments where I could see how good the drama could have been if it had been given a higher production quality.

But despite all that, I don't regret watching it.
So honestly, don't let the ranking decide for you. Give it a chance if the premise interests you and for your own emotional wellbeing, don't get too attached to your favorite characters. Because apparently Overdo has absolutely no mercy.

Overall, it was a good one-time watch for me.

What a coaster ride from start to finish

This series sure has it ups and down, the characters where complex and calculating. Lots of surprising twist, the character Lu Xiao Fan was quite a surprise in character development, what was presented in the beginning was not was we see at the end. Bei Lu Qing, a character that is straight forward of what you see on screen but also underneath the exterior lays a caring person that will do everything to protect the one he loves eventhough it’s seems to hurt the one he try to protect. The shameful Lu family always calculating and greedy, using their youngest son as a step ladder to improve their lives, with family like that Xiao Fan is better off familyless. A great series from start to finish, I’m hoping for a special to see what happens to the characters especially our main leads

Il riscatto del cuore tra ombre e segreti

Bitter Sweet Love si rivela una piacevole sorpresa nel panorama dei BL cinesi, grazie a una trama fitta di misteri che tiene incollati allo schermo. Il vero punto di forza della serie è l'evoluzione del primo protagonista. Inizialmente viene deriso, umiliato e costretto a subire continui soprusi, ma la sua successiva rivalsa è potente, soddisfacente e gestita magistralmente. Al contrario, il secondo protagonista risulta purtroppo un po' troppo freddo, complice una recitazione a tratti distaccata che limita l'empatia con il pubblico. Anche la chimica tra i due attori è presente, ma non esplode mai del tutto, rimanendo un po' tiepida. Fortunatamente il finale risolleva l'opera. Si tratta di una conclusione perfettamente in linea con il titolo: squisitamente dolceamara, capace di lasciare un senso di malinconia ma anche l'orgoglio per una rivalsa finalmente compiuta.

Forever Remaining One of My Favs!

He dreams of her.
They dream of him.

Can the prosecutor get over the craziness of them dreaming the future & learn to accept the reporter’s & policeman’s help?

I love everything about this.
- The bond & friendship formed between the main trio.
- The non-toxic love the SML has for the FL (best kind of SML, imho) & how it doesn’t come between the men’s friendship.
- The dreaming of each other aspect.
- The trust & loyalty they all have for each other.
- The cases they face & how they band together to do what’s right.
- And, of course, the beautiful love between the Leads. 🫠

They’re so fun & smile inducing. Heartwarming & soul healing. They have wonderful chemistry that never fades or dulls due to life’s craziness. I love how protective they always are of each other & how their shared history is interwoven & unraveled throughout the episodes.

This show has all the feels. I laughed. I worried. I cheered. And I swooned. It’s a comfort drama that I return to time & time again 🫶🏻

Oh, to have an app like this!

The FL is a quiet girl whose time at high school gets hard when she becomes a target of bullying. The popular ML notices & comes to her rescue several times. While this leads to the two becoming good friends, it doesn’t stop her tormentors from continuing their abuse. Then a mysterious app appears on her phone, giving her a tool to fight back. Will she finally get some peace or will this result in more chaos?

I was surprised by how much I loved this drama. The plot line & pacing were well done with believable scenarios in each case of revenge. The situations are relatable to what teens face daily. Yes, there are cheesy parts, but they’re not cringey. 🙃

I loved the Leads. They’re strong individuals who are both kind & loyal. Their bond was so precious, I just kept smiling at their scenes together. They’re such a sweet portrayal of first-love that’s pure & free of any toxicity. I can watch them over & over.

The side characters are fun too. Loved the two best friends, as well as her big bro. Obviously the favorite was the SML, Cha EunWoo [Seeing him alongside his Astro members is so bittersweet 💔❤️‍🩹.]

I definitely recommend this for an easy, angst-free, teenage drama. Be prepared, though, cause it leaves you asking - who’s behind the app exacting revenge on her behalf…? 🤔

An emotional and intense short drama that is especially interesting when viewed from the ML, Shen Jincheng's, perspective. His love for Xitong isn't simple or perfect. It is mixed with obsession, misunderstandings, regret, and eventually redemption.

The story takes a dramatic turn after a devastating fire nearly costs Xitong her life. What should have been the beginning of a happy marriage between her and the powerful Shen Jincheng instead becomes surrounded by secrets, betrayal, manipulation, and family problems.

What I found interesting about Shen Jincheng is that underneath the powerful CEO image is a man whose emotions often control his decisions. His love for Xitong is obvious, but loving someone doesn't automatically mean knowing how to love them correctly. Throughout the drama, his actions and choices have consequences, and we see him slowly come to understand what Xitong truly means to him.

Xitong also faces an incredible amount of pressure. With her family threatened financially and people manipulating events behind the scenes, she is forced into situations where every choice seems to come with a price. This creates misunderstandings between her and Shen Jincheng that make their already complicated relationship even harder.

The drama does a good job of making you question whether love alone is enough after trust has been damaged. Shen Jincheng may have wealth and power, but neither can guarantee that the woman he loves will remain beside him.

There are definitely moments when you want these characters to simply TALK to each other! 😂 But the emotional struggles are also what keep you watching.

Overall, Love Without Regret is about more than a CEO falling in love. It's about regret, forgiveness, sacrifice, and realizing that sometimes the greatest thing you can lose isn't money or status—it's the person you thought would always be there.

Came for the story. Stayed for them!

A woman who doesn’t fully trust anyone & is cynical about love.
A demon who’s looked down on humans for 200+ years.

She mistook him for her blind date. He later tries to coerce her into a deal to sell her soul. While trying to flee from him, they’re attacked & his powers transfer to her. They’ll have to either remain enemies or work together to solve their problems - him protecting her from an unknown threat & her staying close so he can use her to access his powers until he can reclaim them.

Their bickering is hilarious, their flirting is adorable, & their chemistry is hottt ❤️‍🔥🔥. I absolutely adore them. Watching them fall was a fantastic ride. Their interactions will make you swoon from all the feels 🫠.

The plot was believable. The way their history was revealed piece by piece kept the intrigue high. Knowing they’d have to pay a price for their love kept the angst turned up. And their continuous displays of affection & protection made all the heavy feel just a bit lighter (like love does!)

The villains are truly evil. How humans can be so utterly horrible is sickening (& sadly our reality). And the wanna-be love rivals are completely delulu. Like - that girl needs checked into a mental institution because of how delusional she is 🤯…

Watch it for the full plot or just watch it for the Leads. Either way, watch it ‘cause they’re a couple you want to see 🖤🤍🩶.

Forbidden romance and hot NCs.

If you love high-stakes angst and some good tension, you need to watch this drama immediately. I had initially put it off so that i could binge it and BOY AM I GLAD I DID.
The story starts with a mess: a man forced to marry into a wealthy, powerful family just to survive a massive scandal in his own. He gets treated bad from his wife that sees it as for show marriage and basically feels that she can do anything to Xiao FAn, but loving brother-in-law saved the day, que that ne handcuffed scene. .But yes the real danger isn't the family itsself IMO—it is his growing, undeniable attraction to his own brother-in-law, its the forbidden that attracts him. What makes this show impossible to drop is how it layers its tropes. You get a perfect storm of forbidden romance mixed with a good age gap dynamic of the real actors. Because they are family by marriage, not by blood which woud have made me drop it immediately , every single scene feels dangerous. Every shared glance carries danger.
And one needs to talk about the chemistry between the leads as it is absolute fire. It is not just about physical closeness; you can see the microexpresions and how they are showing their psychological tension of two people fighting a connection they know they shouldn't have but still wants with a burnung passion. The actors deliver an incredible performance, making you feel the heartbreak and hunger in every frame.

Final Verdict: 10/10 for trope execution. Watch this if you want a wealthy-family drama that will keep your heart racing. Small nitpicks here and thre that drags it down to a 9/10 for me.

Teach you a lesson , ABSOLUTELY

The plot of Teach You a Lesson dives straight into the chaos of broken school systems, where teachers have lost all authority and students run wild until the government finally snaps and creates the Educational Rights Protection Bureau, sending Na Hwa Jin and his team into problem schools like a disciplinary strike force; in the middle of all this intensity, you get Bong Deung Gae — the introverted, socially awkward computer genius who quietly observes everything, hacks through problems like it’s nothing, and somehow ends up forming the softest, cutest spark of romance with Im Ha Rim, whose chaotic sunshine energy bounces off his quiet seriousness in the most unexpectedly adorable way, making the whole gritty, justice‑driven plot feel balanced, human, and honestly addictive.
Jin Ki Joo as Im Ha Rim absolutely owned Teach You a Lesson — every scene she touched turned into this perfect mix of sass, panic, charm, and “girl, please” relatability, because her comedic timing was lethal, her emotional beats were soft, and her whole character felt like watching your funniest friend try to survive academic warfare while still looking adorable, so yes, I loved her, I adored her, and she’s the reason this drama lives rent‑free in my head.

Good grief, these Leads personify cuteness overload!

For real though, the ML is so freakin’ adorable I just want to squish him. I adore watching him fall for the FL & the way he wins her heart. He’s so sincere & protective, which is so sweet since he’s fully aware of her insane strength. I just love how he really sees her, the real her, & does whatever he can to help her chase her dreams & reach her goals. He’s always encouraging & complimenting her, always on her side.

And the FL - I love her snark & confidence. She’s so funny when she acts weak for the SML while totally dominating the ML. Her duality cracks me up! I love how she keeps the ML on his toes. Then when she falls for him it’s just game over - that girl is gone for him!

Their chemistry is palpable & totes makes the viewers jelly. Love all their cute moments, their intense moments, their scary moments, & their victorious moments. They shine so bright when they’re together & they had me rooting for them from their very first interaction. 🫠

Sweet Love in a Toxic World

Our FL is miserable under her mother’s unrealistic expectations. Now a university freshman, she hopes to find a freedom she’s never known. He dreams of becoming a music producer & is doing all he can to turn his dreams into a reality. While more independent & self-confident than the FL, he’s also struggling with his own set of familial problems. Connected by a shared pain, the two find comfort in each other.

I loved watching the bond develop & deepen between these Leads. Both their past & present interactions endeared them both to me. Through her friendship with the ML, the FL found the courage to stand up for herself against the manipulative SML & her overly controlling mother. The ML’s constant support and steady love for the FL was so beautiful & it helped her to become her own person. These two together are absolutely precious & their on-screen chemistry is 🔥🫠!

Low on angst & high in cuteness makes this an easy watch!

The FL is crushing hard on the SML, which causes the ML to tease her relentlessly. But then he realizes that he’s developed feelings for her & her crush no longer amuses him. He begins to pursue her in hopes of winning her affection.

As all this plays out, they’re both facing big choices in their respective sport. She’s a weightlifter who’s not sure she wants to continue. He’s a swimmer who keeps screwing up at his meets.

On top of all the emotions & drama that comes with the college life, they also have difficult family situations. These families will make you ache for their pain & smile for their good times.

A misunderstanding starts them off as enemies who transition to frenemies of sorts. As they get to know one another, they become close friends, which blossoms into lovers. Their journey is filled with the highs & lows of growing up & discovering who they are. Their bond is so sweet & the ways they care for one another are such a joy to witness.
