It starts good then...

I thought I’ve discovered a gem, but as the story progresses , it has this weird, unsettling, character development. They try to takle serious issues like work and family relaled harassment and abuse by brushing it off with "misunderstanding" , giving abusers a redemption arc. One of the girls fear of menn which caused by abuse/trauma from childhood gets easily resolved (not by a therapist) but a male friend from the neighborhood? And later finds peace when her resentment towards her abuser comes to an end after he reveals some "misunderstanding" of his actions. I mean why include serious theme if you want make light hearted slice of life drama? Truly an odd choice, also the house helper does not only help you with house chores but is also « a life coach» writer really tried to paint him into this perfection. This could’ve been a gem if the writer wasn’t confused and tone deaf.

Not the best series but a good starting point.

I've been a on again off again week to week watcher of Kamen Rider since Wizard so I was very interested to see how the first series to be simulcasted in the west would go and I gotta say it's pretty good, though far from perfect. The secret Agent aesthetic early on is probably one of it's strongest points, it really succeeds in evoking stuff like James Bond without straight up copying it, giving it that Rider spin so to say. Though I honestly found the Rider and Kaijin suit design the be quite wanting this series, with only the base and final forms of Zeztz fitting my own tastes enough to make me want figures just based on the looks and all the others just coming off as an oddly colored collection of shapes, sometimes with a very entertaining characters inside. I think the cast is also pretty entertaining, the younger actors are a little rough at times but they mostly hit their marks and the veteran character actors they join have some really fun out there moments when they're allowed to cut loose. Plus, while it is used quite repetitively, the score is very solid and helps to sell moments that would otherwise feel a little weak ether due to the acting or story. Personally though, I feel like the writing really falls off after the big mid series reveal and because of that I'm kinda leaning towards this being my least favorite Takahashi Yuya Rider series, it just goes in a direction that really feels like it's ignoring a greater point it seemed to be building towards in favor of something that feels more generic and makes some of the leads look like fools to me as a more critical viewer. It's not terrible though, the final arc still has a few very good episodes, the action direction stays good throughout almost the entire series if a bit special effects relient for my taste and the finale left me feeling fairly satisfied and interested in seeing what My-th will have to offer. Overall, I think this show did it's job as a good introductory series for new fans that was neat enough for long time ones like myself, but that's really all it works as, this isn't a show I think I'll ever feel the pull to revisit.

A story about music, friendships, and rivalries

This drama has had an excellent start. Ever since I heard it was premiering, it's been the one I've been most looking forward to (plus, the finale airs on my birthday, how exciting!). As a pianist, this series really appealed to me. So far, it's going well, and I hope it continues this way. I like that it doesn't focus on a love triangle, but rather on friendship instead of romance. Another point I liked is how it focused on the family situations of our protagonists and how they struggle day after day; it's very realistic, and that contemporary touch definitely gives the drama a great style. The actors were fantastic, and Jang Gyu-ri was undoubtedly the funniest with her character's energy. So I have high expectations and hope it continues like this. 🎹

Queer as Folks Thailand…maybe

The much-awaited return of WilliamEst is finally here. Since their debut series, their popularity has skyrocketed, and the simultaneous world-wide release on Netflix, IQIYI, VIKI and GMMTV shows just how much they have helped define the rapidly expanding Thai BL industry. As Uncle Ben told Peter Parker, “With great power comes great responsibility.” The expectations placed upon these two are now enormous. For sure GMMTV brought out their big guns (and money) to produce this series.

A breakout series may rely heavily on chemistry and production, but lasting success also depends on choosing the right script. As William and Est gradually move into more mature roles, You Maniac has the opportunity to prove that their appeal extends beyond the characters who made them famous.

The series enters Thailand’s openly visible gay culture through two opposing personalities…Dean, a seemingly open-book player, and Moth, who is far more guarded and reserved. It is a familiar pairing, told many times before, so I hope the writers develop them into something deeper than another hormone-driven gay romance. With its large ensemble of men navigating their own relationships, the series already reminds me of one of my favorite gay shows…the American version of Queer as Folk. Thankfully, WilliamEst were never trapped in high school roles, which should make their transition into this more adult world feel natural.

Perhaps I am asking too much after only one episode, but the potential is clearly there. If You Maniac can come even close to the emotional and sexual intensity of Queer as Folk, WilliamEst may finally break free from the shadows of Thame and Po…and begin defining who they truly want to become as actors.

First Love, Six Years of Pain, Intense Kisses and a Reunion I Could Not Stop Watching!

I am usually not a fan of vertical dramas because I have to constantly hold my phone. Unfortunately, Eyes on You is not available on the iQIYI TV app and can only be watched through the mobile app. However, once I started watching, I completely forgot about that minor inconvenience. I was addicted from beginning to end and watched all 51 short episodes in one sitting. Yes, all 51 episodes in one go. I was completely hooked because it was just that good.

The story follows Junheng and Shiyu, who were each other's first love during high school and shared a passion for archery. Their relationship was torn apart six years earlier when Shiyu suddenly left Junheng. At the time, Junheng believed that Shiyu had chosen money over their relationship after his father offered Shiyu financial help while Shiyu's own father was seriously ill in hospital.

However, the truth was much more complicated. Shiyu made the painful decision to walk away because he wanted Junheng to focus on his future and pursue his archery career without the pressure and potential consequences surrounding their same sex relationship. Unfortunately, years of misunderstandings and unresolved pain left both of them deeply hurt.

When they reunite six years later, Junheng is now a successful archery champion and asks Shiyu to become his manager and work with him. Their relationship goes through a emotional journey from former lovers to enemies and eventually back to lovers again. Junheng initially wants to make Shiyu feel the pain he carried for years, but as they spend more time together, his anger slowly begins to turn into concern. The torment gradually becomes caring, protecting and rescuing Shiyu, as his heart slowly opens up again.

The basic premise is not particularly new. We have seen similar storylines countless times in K-dramas, especially the rich parent offering money to the poorer main lead and telling them to leave their child. But honestly, a familiar plot can still be incredibly enjoyable when it is executed well, and Eyes on You absolutely kept me entertained.

What really made this series work for me was the chemistry between the two leads. The acting was engaging, the tension between them was addictive, and their relationship kept me wanting to immediately watch the next episode. The kissing scenes were especially intense. Their early kisses were filled with anger, resentment and years of unresolved emotions, but once the misunderstandings began to clear, their relationship became incredibly cute and adorable.

The story itself is simple, but sometimes simple stories are exactly what you need when the acting and chemistry are strong enough to keep you invested. Despite being a short vertical series, I found myself completely absorbed in their journey from first love, to enemies, and finally finding their way back to each other.

If you enjoy first love reunions, lovers becoming enemies before falling in love again, athlete male leads, emotional misunderstandings, flashbacks, archery, intense kissing scenes and a story that hooks you from start to finish, this short series should definitely not be missed.

I honestly hope both actors get the opportunity to star together in a full length series in the future because I would absolutely support and watch them again.

The Road to the Cold Palace

Fu Tingyun seemed to have it all—she is the lovely, educated, highborn ninth lady of the Huaiying Fu family of four chastity arcs fame. In order to arrest their decline, the Fu family plans to match her with the rising Yu family of Yongning. Thus even the flowers at the Fu mansion seem to bloom in winter, and the snow dares not melt to dirty her embroidered shoes. But all the fake flowers and powder snow cannot mask the rot and false hypocrisy of the Fu family. Tingyun finds herself betrayed and cruelly cast aside at what should have been her moment of glory. With the help of Zhao Ling, a brave and ambitious young salt smuggler, she escapes and they reinvent themselves. They make a pact to work together to clear her name, reclaim her place in society, and ascend to the highest levels of official power.

The Road to Splendor is a sweeping critique of feudal society, seen through the harrowing ascent of an ambitious power couple through the treacherous Ming court and high society. On the surface, the narrative lays bare how suffocating and restrictive patriarchal society was for women, yet behind the scenes, evidently it was the women who really ruled the world. It is a plot- and character-heavy story steeped in the kind of realism that casual audiences looking for fairytales or light entertainment may not enjoy. Even though they did bad things, characters like Madame Zuo and Fan Yake (surprisingly) were products of their time and societal restrictions. I didn't approve of them, but I still pitied them. I found Madame Zuo to be the best-acted role in the drama. I am also a huge fan of Wen Zhongren and her Madame Yu is probably the best-written character in this story. That gave her a lot to work with and yet I didn't find her performance to be that differentiated from or on another level over her many other complex and superbly portrayed roles.

This is the first time I have watched Ding Yuxi and Deng Enxi. While neither blew me away, I thought they both delivered respectable performances. I won't lie—I did not enjoy Ding Yuxi's excessive posing, especially in the first half of the drama. He looked like he was auditioning for Batman Returns with the flamboyant sweep of his cape, his enigmatic tilted-head angle, and his silent, watchful glare. For a drama that takes itself so seriously in terms of production values and cinematography, such obvious idol fan service feels out of place. But he is a charismatic actor who does a noticeably better job in the later arcs, conveying an isolated, brooding Zhao Ling who suffers in silence.

As for Deng Enxi, her screen presence is not the strongest, and she bored me in the beginning. I also found her voice actor's over-assertive tone did not match her more demure and nuanced facial expressions. While I think she did a terrific job conveying a noble, educated, and imperious young lady and the character's aloof coldness, she failed to make her likeable. In the later arcs, she seemed angry all the time and wore a cold expression and perpetual frown that made me pity poor Zhao Ling. It is true the plot didn't give her that much to work with, but the actress also never convinced me she was in love. She looked at Zhao Ling like he irritated her—not like she adored him. Maybe that's a very young actor's inexperience showing, but either way, the romance never landed for me.

I did not mind that Zhao Ling and Tingyun's relationship is far from perfect—they had real personality clashes and conflicts that unfortunately never get fully resolved. I found their relationship journey a bit frustrating because they were often not aligned and seemed to be working toward different endgames. Their romantic journey, if you can even call it that, gave me frostbite instead of diabetes. I often wondered whether the real power struggle was between them and the Yus, or between Tingyun and the emperor over who was the master of Zhao Ling's fate. The love story was like watching Zhao Ling on the road to the Cold Palace. Luckily, I was not watching for the romance, and there was enough plot in the early arcs to keep me entertained and highly engaged.

What I enjoyed most about this story were the salt reform arcs and the mausoleum plot arcs. The rich history was so well researched and brought to life in such a vivid way that I was hooked. In both arcs, both the villains and the protagonists were smart, and their victories and defeats were well earned. Unfortunately, the subsequent subplots flirted with melodrama and were less logically constructed, forcing heavy losses on the leads. I don't mind when the villains get the upper hand because they were smarter, but after the mausoleum arc, it felt like they only won because supporting characters were dumb and greedy. After a low point around Episode 32, where I was bracing for dog's blood melodrama, the plot managed to recover and finish on solid footing. The ending was a mixed bag—the main villains got off way too easily, but some side characters I had already written off managed to surprise me in a good way. And while this is for sure an unpopular opinion, I personally would have set Zhao Ling free.

I was drawn to this drama because it was a story about someone who is a nobody, an outsider. Unfortunately it turned out that was how he was treated from start to finish. So while the rich historical detail and high production values engaged me during watching, the script lacks humor, the ending was only barely satisfactory and there is no part of it that I will rewatch. Thus my rating is 8.0/10.

Perfect Crown? Debatable

I went into Perfect Crown without particularly high expectations, and honestly, that probably helped.

I love IU but Hui-ju felt like a disappointing role for her. Most of the time, she came across as Jang Man-wol from Hotel del Luna with a different name; same expressions, same tone, same mannerisms. And considering what IU has shown us in previous roles, it felt like she was barely scratching the surface of what she could do. Her character also gets increasingly swallowed up by I-an's arc, going from an impressive, independent woman to essentially just another person in love. Not exactly what I wanted from her.

Byeon Woo-seok is, of course, ridiculously beautiful. The man was filmed from every conceivable flattering angle, and honestly, I understand why. Unfortunately, he remains a very mediocre actor. He has about five expressions, and while the restrained nature of his character works in his favour for most of the drama, he struggles whenever he's required to convey anything more emotionally complicated than looking pretty and mildly distressed.

Gong Seung-yeon, however, absolutely grew into the Queen Mother. She ended up being my favourite of the leads. Strong, calculating and manipulative, but never completely evil, she is ultimately someone who wants all the sacrifices she made to mean something. Her breakdown in episode 10 was easily one of the best acting moments in the drama, and I genuinely wish the show had given her more scenes like that.

The romance was probably my biggest problem. The leads aren't completely devoid of chemistry, but there simply isn't enough of it to carry a romance-centric drama. We're expected to believe in this enormous, “I will literally die for you” kind of love after barely watching these people get to know each other. That fire scene in episode 11? Where did all that devotion come from?
This is the problem with cramming stories like this into 12 episodes. The script tells us these people are deeply in love instead of giving us enough time to actually feel it. And when the emotional foundation isn't there, all the grand romantic gestures start feeling artificial. Also the reveal that I-an has liked her since high school was so predictable I nearly rolled my eyes out of my head.

The story itself isn't particularly original either. It's basically a convenient-marriage trope with rich people, beautiful clothes and a massive budget. The royal-family politics felt painfully outdated. The Prime Minister's arc was just bizarre. For eight episodes, he's the quintessential forlorn second lead, quietly pining away, and then suddenly he's the villain. And not even an interesting villain. The shift is so abrupt and blandly executed that I wasn't invested, shocked or even mildly surprised. I just sat there thinking, oh, so I guess we're doing this now.
Also, can we please stop giving us second leads who spend years refusing to confess their feelings and then become problematic the moment the woman they love falls for someone else?

I would have much rather watched the Prime Minister and the Queen Mother fall into some forbidden romance. Now that I would have been seated for.

Despite all that, there were things I genuinely loved.
I-an's relationship with her nephew was probably my favourite relationship in the entire show. I also loved watching Hui-ju's family gradually warm up to her. There was no big dramatic reconciliation; they simply became kinder and more supportive over time, which felt surprisingly natural.

The costumes were gorgeous, especially the way they blended traditional Korean clothing with modern tailoring. The proposal, dance sequence and traditional wedding ceremony were all beautifully done. And IU walking into the palace in that red suit?
Absolutely iconic. I also really liked the eventual resolution between I-an and the Queen Mother. Once power and hierarchy stop getting in the way, their relationship comes full circle in a surprisingly delicate way.

And I have to mention Hui-ju's sister-in-law, who was basically a human marshmallow. Earnest, loving and genuinely supportive without ever becoming irritating. I adored her.

And then there is the part of my brain that spent the entire drama screaming:
ABOLISH THE MONARCHY.
I simply cannot get behind a modern-day monarchy. Historical monarchy dramas? Fine. It happened. It's over. But why are we still doing this in the present day? So when the show finally abolished the monarchy, I actually cheered. Best decision they made.

Overall, Perfect Crown is pretty, charming and easy enough to watch. It has some genuinely lovely moments, but nothing about it feels particularly memorable. It is, essentially, an average drama wrapped in very expensive paper.

Not bad. Not great. Just... pretty.

My review for now

As a super-duper WilliamEst fan, I really wanted to love this. And honestly, the kilig factor is definitely there. Their chemistry and acting are still one of the strongest points of the series. WilliamEst is #1 on my list for a reason. 😭❤️

But story-wise… I couldn't help feeling that we've seen this kind of BL storyline many times before. The “swag, handsome, head-turner guy who everyone is obsessed with” character feels like a familiar formula, and I’m not sure why WilliamEst had to do another version of something that has already been explored so many times in BL.

What disappointed me more was the production itself. Some scenes -- production quality sometimes looked cheaper than what I expected from a WilliamEst project. It gave me the feeling that the series was put together too quickly.

And that's probably my biggest frustration: WilliamEst can do better than this.

Their acting is good. Their chemistry is there. The kilig is definitely working. 😂 But because they're two actors I genuinely love and have so much potential, I was hoping for a story that would challenge them more and give them characters with greater depth.

Episode 1 isn't terrible — it just feels too soon to recycle this kind of story again. And for WilliamEst(and their whole team), I was expecting something that feels more fresh, more ambitious, and more worthy of what they can actually deliver.

Still watching, still rooting for them. 🫶🏻
I just hope the story proves me wrong in the coming episodes. 👀

Good movie with correct subs

I just recently watched this on gagaoolala and luckily never experienced the bad subs everyone is talking about. The subs must make a huge difference because my mind is blown by the people saying the actors didn’t do a good job. They were great. The chemistry was great and intense and they acted their roles so well. The change in both of them after the switch up was so well done. That being said the story had so much potential and they just didn’t follow through. This could have been a great mystery thriller but they dropped the ball and even with good subs the ending was confusing. I would rewatch again only because the sex was hot. They did a great job with that and the plot is interesting enough but it could have been great if they had developed it more. The actors were definitely up to the ease.

541 dias depois, finalmente entendi por que eu precisava assistir isso.

Se passaram 541 dias até que eu finalmente conseguisse terminar esse drama. Eu tinha parado de assistir não porque ele fosse ruim, muito longe disso, mas simplesmente porque não estava na vibe de assistir um slice of life.

Há 3 dias resolvi dar uma nova chance e, sinceramente, o quão mal eu fiquei assistindo não é brincadeira. Posso dizer com todas as letras: ESSE FOI O MELHOR DRAMA QUE EU JÁ ASSISTI NA MINHA VIDA.

Espero que, se algum dia eu tiver a chance, consiga me tornar um homem igual ou até melhor que o nosso querido Gwan-sik. Que personagem, que homem.

O drama me deu muito gatilho principalmente por causa dos dramas familiares, em especial a relação da filha com a mãe. Isso me fez pensar muito na minha própria relação com a minha mãe. Só de estar escrevendo isso já estou com lágrimas nos olhos.

Eu falo coisas que magoam ela, mesmo quando não era exatamente aquilo que eu queria dizer. É como se eu não pensasse antes de falar. Às vezes jogo a culpa dos meus próprios problemas nela e acabo descontando coisas que não deveria.

Mas eu sei de uma coisa: quando ela não estiver mais aqui, eu vou desabar em um poço sem fundo.

Talvez seja justamente por isso que esse drama tenha me atingido tanto. Ele não apenas conta uma história bonita. Ele faz você olhar para as pessoas que ama e pensar em tudo aquilo que ainda pode ser dito, feito e consertado enquanto há tempo.

Espero conseguir valorizar mais a minha relação com ela enquanto ainda tenho tempo, antes que seja tarde demais.

Esse não foi apenas um drama que eu assisti. Foi uma experiência que me fez olhar para mim mesmo. E acho que é por isso que, depois de 541 dias, valeu cada segundo da espera.
