I was not as blown away as I expected

I originally wanted to give this a 9/10, but looking at my ratings in the different categories, that would be unfaithful to the movie. It had a similar vibe to Parasite and Monster, both of which throw you around with new revelations, so that was what I expected, but I wasn't thrown around nearly as much as I thought. I was only startled at the turning point between part 1 and part 2, the rest wasn't as revolutionary (tho learning what "reading" meant was certainly unsettling and shocking, but not in the way I'm talking about here). So I think my disappointment was affecting how I wanted to rate it.

- Taboo topics
I love the exploration of taboo topics, especially how it's done so casually. Or, casually in the sense that it's not portrayed as something wrong or extraordinary, it's just presented to you, there's no one on-screen who can't understand it or are prejudiced, and you are just left to make up your own mind about it. It's not casual in how the movie deals with it, it's delved quite thoroughly into lol.

- Cinematography
I love the house, and I love the camera work, costumes, frames, weather – everything; the visuals are impeccable. I also love comparing part 1 and part 2 in style and cinematography, which is also why I think the rewatch value should be so high.
And, while not cinematography, the audio and sensory part need a mention. Whenever the characters experience something mainly sensory, the audio is amplified and the camera focuses, giving you little else to look at. It's sort of eerie, but also drags you into the movie. The movie somehow retains its sense of class and dignity despite some of these scenes being borderline gross.

- Characters
I'm a sucker for fleshed out characters, and this is lovely. I especially love how the uncle is exactly the same in the end as in the beginning. Everything he does is so predictable to his character and a perfect embodiment of his values. Like how he rejects his Korean heritage, and insists on being as Japanese or British as he can. Everything he does can be traced back to that or the other major thing I won't spoil.
The lady Hideko is also a character I love, especially how the actress, scriptwriter and director all cooperate to make her as baby-like as possible. Especially in the bath the resemblance is striking.
All the characters are caricatures of their biggest flaws, yet still refuse to see their own shortcomings, and no one brings them to their attention. I love it.

- Humour
The humour here seems so effortless, that I sometimes wondered if it was even intended to be funny or if I'm just weird. It also feels so out of place, which makes anything 10x funnier. Kim Tae-ri is of course also naturally funny lol, she was a great casting choice.

I went into Double Helix knowing very little and was pleasantly surprised

First of all, when i found out it’s a Chinese BL I expected heavy censorship, but the series surprised me in a good way. The story is engaging, and it deliberately avoids portraying a healthy, realistic relationship — you could even call the central romance toxic. I enjoy that kind of darker, psychologically complex storytelling, though it’s important not to normalize the behavior shown; the series is unrealistic and shouldn’t be seen as a model for real-life relationships.

Liking a story with toxic elements isn’t the same as endorsing them, and I disagree with people who dismiss the series solely because of that. There’s a lot more to appreciate: for a 12-episode run, the characters are written relatively well and feel distinct. I liked the main couple — their dynamic is intense and compelling. By contrast, the secondary couple didn’t do much for me; their subplot felt unnecessary and underdeveloped.

One useful point the show raises is that labeling a partner’s harmful actions as “mental illness” doesn’t fix anything. The series suggests that poor communication and a lack of cooperation can lead to major misunderstandings and relationship damage, which I found thoughtfully handled. Overall, despite flaws and uncomfortable elements, I enjoyed the review and found the series worth watching for viewers who appreciate more serious, psychologically driven BL.

Complex but worth it

I have to admit that Veil of Shadows was not an easy drama to get into. During the first episodes, I often found myself struggling to keep track of all the characters, storylines and hidden motivations. The world is incredibly rich and detailed, but the drama does very little hand-holding. At times, it felt as if I was missing important information, and I wondered whether I would ever be able to connect all the dots.
Thankfully, I stuck with it.

What initially felt overwhelming slowly started to make sense, and once the various storylines began connecting with one another, the entire experience became much more enjoyable. Looking back, I actually appreciate how ambitious the writing is. This isn't a drama that relies on simple storytelling. Instead, it asks viewers to pay attention and trust that all the pieces will eventually fall into place. And for the most part, they do.

If there is one thing that immediately stands out about Veil of Shadows, it is how absolutely stunning it looks. The costumes are gorgeous, the sets are beautifully designed, and the cinematography constantly creates images that feel almost dreamlike; every location feels unique and carefully crafted.
The visual effects deserve special praise as well. The supernatural creatures, transformations, and battle sequences are impressive to watch and add a real sense of scale to the story.

The music complements the drama perfectly and helps create its emotional atmosphere. Some scenes would not have had the same impact without the beautiful score playing in the background.

Once I became familiar with the characters and their relationships, I found myself much more invested in their journeys. Beneath all the fantasy elements, the drama explores themes of destiny, sacrifice, loyalty, identity, and love. The emotional core of the story becomes stronger as the series progresses, and many characters reveal layers that are not immediately obvious during the opening episodes. I also appreciated how the drama never takes the easy route. Alliances shift, secrets are revealed, and characters are often forced to make difficult choices. There were several moments where information revealed later completely changed the way I viewed earlier scenes.

It may not be the easiest fantasy series to follow at first, but its intricate storytelling, breathtaking visuals, fantastic soundtrack, and immersive world make the effort worthwhile.

Beware your Messiah

A decent fantasy horror with strong religious and occult themes. Actually, it leans more toward occult horror than traditional religious storytelling, which reminded me of the acclaimed films like The Wailing and Exhuma. This movie doesn’t have as much charisma as those two as it mixes a lot of elements and feels a bit all over the place at times. Still, it manages to direct everything together toward its main purpose, and fans of this genre won’t be disappointed.

As the movie progressed, I became more and more engaged. I’d say the finale was the best part, even though I would have preferred a different ending. The acting is also better than in most horror films, and even the supporting characters effectively carried the creepy atmosphere throughout.

There’s a lot to discuss about the themes and story, but to avoid spoilers, I’ll just say that the film draws from various religious traditions, including Shamanism, Shintoism, and Christianity. It explores the extremes of blind belief and how entire communities can descend into superstitious and dangerous cults. This can be read as a critique of religion, but it also echoes Jesus’ warning that many false messiahs will appear — so beware if you seek a messiah/savior somewhere else.

Almost Dropped It... and I'm Glad I Didn't

I rarely write reviews, but something about Cha Eunwoo's performance in this drama motivated me to write one. I absolutely loved the drama. My favourite part has to be the humour and its impeccable comedic timing. I was genuinely impressed by the cast's performances.

Park Eun-bin is the queen of versatility. Her character is quirky, intuitive, and a little eccentric, but above all, she's a genuine person. Ro-bin is the kind-hearted, innocent guy who's deeply devoted to his friends. At first, I felt uneasy with the criticism constantly thrown his way, but it was amazing to watch how those demeaning words eventually became a source of strength for him.

Choi Dae-hoon's character was another highlight for me. He feels realistic and tactful, though sometimes a little too cautious. He honestly reminded me of Sunio from Doraemon haha. But comedy scenes without him would be like food without salt.

Cha Eunwoo impressed me the most. As someone who's been his fan for a long time, I was amazed by how fantastic his performance was. His expressions, dialogue delivery, and body language suited the character well. You could really see his growth as an actor. Loved seeing him serve face every time he's on the screen (girl dinner 💅).
The side characters were great too — special mention to Jun-mo, lol.

The only reason this isn't a 10/10 for me is because of two things. Firstly, the series starts off a bit messy. The first two episodes left me so confused that I almost considered dropping it. Secondly, the scenes set in the late '90s didn't really capture that nostalgic 90s atmosphere. They felt a bit too modern and polished. I wish the drama had leaned more into that era.

Overall, though, I had a great time watching it and would definitely recommend giving it a chance.

Subindo de Nível na Cozinha do Exército

A Lenda do Soldado Cozinheiro (2026) traz uma proposta super criativa ao misturar o universo militar com elementos de jogos de RPG e culinária. Acompanhamos o jovem Kang Seong Jae, um rapaz que perdeu o pai, mas conta com o amor de sua mãe e de sua irmã. Ele se alista no exército e acaba virando auxiliar de cozinha, mas sua rotina muda completamente quando uma tela holográfica surge para transformar suas habilidades no fogão.

Por que a nota 8.5?
Protagonista Esforçado: O ponto alto do dorama é ver a evolução do Seong Jae. Ele é totalmente capaz de se superar e se transformar em um cozinheiro muito melhor a cada episódio, subindo de nível com dedicação.
Rede de Apoio Nota 10: A história ganha muito coração com as pessoas ao redor dele. Além da mãe e da irmã, ele tem uma amiga linda que chama a atenção e amigos militares super legais e parceiros que tornam a rotina no quartel muito mais divertida.
Proposta Dinâmica: O uso da tela 3D de "O Jeito do Chef" transforma as tarefas repetitivas da cozinha militar em missões de jogo bem humoradas, deixando o enredo leve e muito gostoso de acompanhar.

Ganha nota 8.5 porque é um dorama muito envolvente, inovador e com personagens secundários apaixonantes.

excellent

Season 2 was the perfect ending and honestly even better than I expected. It managed to keep everything I loved about the first season while delivering a satisfying and emotional conclusion. The cast once again did an incredible job, and the chemistry between the actors was just as strong and captivating as before. The story was engaging from beginning to end, balancing romance, action, drama, and fantasy in a way that never felt overwhelming.

One of my favorite aspects of the series was the breathtaking scenery and cinematography. Every location felt magical and beautifully crafted, making the world come alive on screen. Normally, I’m not a huge fan of fantasy dramas, which is why I hesitated to watch it for so long. I only decided to give it a chance after seeing it ranked in a friend’s Top 10 list, and I’m so glad I did.

This drama completely exceeded my expectations and never disappointed me. The emotional moments, character development, and overall production quality made it a memorable experience. Alchemy of Souls is easily one of the best Kdramas I’ve watched, and Season 2 gave the story the ending it truly deserved.

Interesting setting with strong chemistry.

The chemistry between Scent and Gaysorn is strong, and the storyline is very interesting, with people from the mountains who smell like flowers. Scent only goes to the mountains for selfish reasons, but genuinely falls for Gaysorn.

Unfortunately, the side characters are mostly annoying apart from the best friend in the lab and Tawan (who I expected to meet and be together). Also, the story focuses a lot on where Gaysorn's mother is, specifically the last couple of episodes.

I found the series a mostly enjoyable experience, with some odd visual effects, but I found them entertaining enough (spore and butterflies). I wish the two had spent more time bonding in the mountains, at least a couple of episodes.

ESSE DRAMA É SIMPLESMENTE SENSACIONAL

Só tenho uma coisa a dizer: se vc está na dúvida se começa ou não, simplesmente comece!

Fazia tempo que eu não assistia a um drama que me deixasse tão satisfeita do início ao fim. A história é muito bem construída, não deixa pontas soltas e entrega um desfecho justo para todos os personagens. Cada um tem seu espaço e sua própria trajetória, dos protagonistas ao vilão. Inclusive, imperador de Jinxiu, você conquistou meu coração mesmo com todos os seus defeitos! 😂

Mas o grande destaque, para mim, foi o casal principal. Pensem em um verdadeiro enemies to lovers, daqueles bem desenvolvidos, que faz você torcer por cada interação e acreditar no romance deles. Eles são lindos juntos, extremamente parceiros e têm uma química incrível. O que mais gostei foi que nenhum dos dois mede esforços pelo outro, e quando finalmente ficam juntos não existe drama desnecessário nem enrolação.

Enfim, amei, amei e amei! ❤️✨

Unexpected twist

I was initially hesitant to start "Marry My Husband" because it's well-known that Park Min Young's projects often have a similar storyline. Her character is traumatized as a child, and a small boy helps her, leading to her falling for him. This plot line repeats itself across many of her dramas, and even though she is a talented actress, watching her portray the same character type repeatedly can become boring. Despite my reservations, I decided to give this drama a chance after receiving numerous recommendations, and I must say, it was spectacular!

I had read a few chapters of the webtoon a long time ago, so I had some idea of the story. However, by the time I decided to watch the drama, I had forgotten most of the details.

The story features supernatural time travel, which adds a satisfying twist, especially in the context of revenge dramas. The characters are interesting and unique, evolving in ways that make them increasingly unpredictable as the story progresses. This dynamic is what made the narrative so engaging.

Regarding the acting, I enjoyed Park Min Young's performance; however, the actress who played her best friend and nemesis, truly shone in her role. She was remarkable as the evil best friend, and considering her past controversies due to bullying allegations, it’s clear that she was channeling her own experiences into the character. It's unfortunate that such a talented is wasted due to her poor choices.

As for Park Min Young, my feelings about her are mixed. The first drama of hers that I watched captivated me, but after seeing a few more, I noticed that they all followed the same plot line, which became tedious. My belief has always been that whichever drama you watch first will be the one you love, while the others will feel like mere copies. However, in this drama, she made an impressive comeback and delivered a phenomenal performance.

The King’s Warden è un film del 2026 presentato in sala durante il FEFF.
È un film che mi ha piacevolmente stupita. Non serve conoscere il periodo storico coreano per seguirlo, perché il contesto viene spiegato in modo talmente semplice e chiaro che è facile entrare subito nella vicenda.

La storia è ispirata a figure realmente esistite. Il protagonista è il re Danjong, una figura storica molto amata in Corea. Danjong è spesso considerato uno dei sovrani più legittimi dell'intera storia della dinastia Joseon. Suo nonno era il grande re Sejong, mentre suo padre era Munjong, il figlio maggiore di Sejong. Danjong era a sua volta il figlio maggiore di Munjong: una linea di successione praticamente impeccabile. Fu il primo caso di questo genere nella storia di Joseon e, anche successivamente, è difficile trovare un esempio altrettanto perfetto di legittimità dinastica.
Danjong sale al trono alla morte del padre quando è ancora giovanissimo. Nel film ha dodici anni; alcune fonti storiche riportano, invece, dieci o quattordici anni, ma in ogni caso si tratta di un’età molto giovane. Sua madre era morta poco dopo averlo dato alla luce.
Il suo vero problema, però, era avere uno zio rispetto al quale Scar della Disney sembra quasi niente: il Gran Principe Suyang. Quest'ultimo riesce infatti a usurpargli il trono e a mandarlo in esilio in un remoto villaggio di montagna, un insediamento rurale sperduto e poverissimo situato nella valle montana di Cheongnyeongpo, a Yeongwol.
Il capo villaggio, Eom Heung-do, è un uomo piuttosto credulone: quando gli viene detto che ospitare un nobile esiliato porterà prosperità e ricchezza alla comunità, ci crede immediatamente e fa di tutto per avere Danjong nel suo villaggio. Peccato che non si tratti di un nobile qualunque, ma del re deposto. La sua presenza, quindi, non promette necessariamente ricchezze; anzi, all’inizio rappresenta anche un peso, perché deve riferire costantemente alla corte imperiale ciò che accade al giovane sovrano in esilio.

Naturalmente c'è anche una parte romanzata. Il film sviluppa l'amicizia tra l'ex imperatore e gli abitanti del villaggio, una comunità povera che vive principalmente di caccia e raccolta. Nessuno di loro sa leggere né scrivere perché non hanno avuto modo di studiare e nel villaggio non sono presenti alcun tipo di libri, e Danjong cercherà di aiutarli.
La storia si conclude seguendo gli eventi storici reali. L'ultima scena, in cui vediamo il capo villaggio compiere una determinata azione, sembra essere basata su fatti realmente accaduti. Secondo alcuni scritti, l'uomo visse poi nascosto con la propria famiglia fino alla sua morte per timore di rappresaglie da parte del re.

Il film raggiunge pienamente il suo obiettivo: mi ha appassionata a tal punto che, una volta terminata la visione, sono andata subito a cercare informazioni sulla vera storia di Danjong. Considero questo un aspetto davvero positivo, perché opere come questa permettono di avvicinare anche chi vive al di fuori della Corea alla storia e alla cultura di questo paese.
Danjong è interpretato dal giovanissimo Park Ji-hoon, ex membro del gruppo idol Wanna One, che è riuscito ancora una volta a stupirmi. Ogni volta che lo vedo in un ruolo diverso rimango colpita dalle sue capacità e dalla sua versatilità, tanto che, in un primo momento, non l'avevo nemmeno riconosciuto nel film. Qui appare maestoso negli abiti imperiali; lo avevo già visto in Weak Hero Class mentre distribuiva pugni a destra e a manca, e prima ancora in At a Distance, Spring Is Green con i suoi boccoli biondi e l'aria da cucciolotto. Sono davvero curiosa di scoprire quanto riuscirà ancora a crescere come attore.

Come già detto, Danjong è una figura storica molto cara ai coreani. Proprio a causa della sua vita tragica e commovente, compare in innumerevoli opere di fantasia, tra cui romanzi, serie televisive, film e perfino fumetti. Tra gli esempi più noti troviamo The Face Reader e The Princess's Man. Chissà che non lo rivedremo presto protagonista di un'altra opera dedicata alla sua storia.

Shinya Sugiki è come il tango: elegante e raffinato.
Shinya Suzuki è come la rumba: passionale e sfacciato.
Non potrebbero essere più diversi, eppure sono due mondi destinati a incontrarsi e così facendo cambieranno per sempre le loro vite.

10DANCE è un live-action di produzione Netflix con Keita Machida e Ryoma Takeuchi protagonisti, tratto dall’omonimo manga di Satou Inoue. Nonostante sia un film sensuale e ipnotico, non è una pellicola priva di difetti.
La storia racconta di due ballerini, Sugiki secondo a livello mondiale nella categoria dei balli da sala e Suzuki campione giapponese dei balli latino-americani. Su idea di Sugiki, decidono di aiutarsi a vicenda per partecipare alla gara 10Dance dove i ballerini dovranno esibirsi in 10 tipi diversi di ballo.

Il film ha un ritmo lento e si prende i suoi tempi per far appassionare lo spettatore, ma la storia funziona fino a un certo punto.
Premettendo che non ho avuto la possibilità di leggere il manga, quindi non so se è un problema che si può riscontrare anche nel cartaceo, ciò che mi ha impedito di godermi appieno il film risulta come è stato caratterizzato il personaggio di Sugiki.
Lui si presenta come un ballerino rigido, che fatica a comunicare le sue emozioni e proprio per questo le due decisioni e la sua crescita personale non è chiara, anzi alcune volte è lasciata all’interpretazione dello spettatore che deve capire cosa sta provando o pensando. Le sue emozioni sono nascoste e vengono fuori in maniera inattesa, in modi impensabili. È un personaggio sfaccettato che probabilmente porta qualche cicatrice passata, ma nel film viene dato solo un assaggio: più che spiegazioni, vengono dati degli indizi con cui lo spettatore può ricostruire il puzzle.
Se Suzuki si plasma e smorsa i suoi difetti per adattarsi al ritmo, ai movimenti di ballo e al carattere di Sugiki, quest’ultimo sembra fare solo un passettino in avanti rispetto ai dieci fatti dall’altro, o comunque due passi avanti e uno indietro.
È Sugiki che guida, sempre. Proprio per questo la tensione emotiva, che è presente in tutto il film, è sempre composta e controllata. Come nel ballo, anche nella vita Suzuki dà importanza alla tecnica e ai risultati, mentre Sugiki cerca di insegnarli a seguire l’istinto e la passione.

La mancanza di un’esplosione emotiva, però, è proprio ciò che rende questa tensione così potente. I movimenti dei corpi durante il ballo sono il vero linguaggio dei sentimenti: sono i gesti a parlare.
In questo la regia esegue un lavoro magistrale seguendo da vicino i ballerini e mettendo in primo piano le mani che si muovono sul copro del proprio partner di ballo: una stretta più forte, le dita che scivolano poco più in basso del fianco o un tocco sulla schiena.

Lo scontro fra due mondi che sembrano non capirsi dà vita a un turbamento emotivo, fatto da frustrazione, ma soprattutto di attrazione. Le emozioni crescono ad ogni passo di ballo.
A sottolineare tutto ciò, si aggiungono i silenzi e gli sguardi evitati, oltre a quelli dati a debita distanza, solo quando uno è sicuro che l’altro non può vedere.
In questa danza di emozioni, in cui i personaggi ballano con i loro sentimenti in un tira e molla di passini, i due attori protagonisti sono impeccabili. I loro movimenti sono precisi, sensuali, ipnotici.
Il film funziona grazie all’interpretazione di Keita Machida e Ryoma Takeuchi, alla loro chimica palpabile e ai loro movimenti durante i balli che sono carichi di erotismo.
La parte dei balli è fortemente realistica, facendo solo intuire il lavoro che i due attori devono aver fatto per poter recitare in questa pellicola.

Tutto ciò, purtroppo, non è bastato a soddisfare le (forse troppo alte) aspettative: lo spettatore attende che la tensione emotiva raggiunga il suo culmine e che finalmente esploda e spera di vedere realizzata la passione e il desiderio dei protagonisti, ma si arriva con il fiato sospeso all’ultima scena rimanendo delusi.
La crescita di Sugiki è lenta, minima e ridotta agli ultimi minuti di visione, lasciando intendere che forse c’è molto altro da raccontare.
La storia d’amore sembra rimanere incompiuta, forse perché anche il manga è ancora in corso e tante vicende devono essere ancora affrontate, ma nella pellicola si sente la mancanza di qualcosa.
E non solo nel finale: anche nella parte raccontata nel film si ha la sensazione che qualcosa sia stato tolto, forse a causa di tempistiche ristrette dovute alla pellicola.
In conclusione, 10DANCE si fa guardare più per l’interpretazione degli attori che per la storia stessa che aveva un bel potenziale, ma non sfruttato a pieno.
