Disappointed by potential

I went into Shine expecting to root for Mile and Apo’s epic romance. Instead, I walked away mostly disappointed and that disappointment had far more to do with the writing and character choices than the acting.

The performances were brilliant and poignant. In fact, the acting was so convincing that instead of feeling heartbroken during their emotional moments, I felt vindicated in my frustrations with the characters. That alone proves how well the actors embodied their roles.

Trin & Thanwa – Wasted Yin and Yang Potential
Trin and Thanwa had all the ingredients for a compelling opposites-attract dynamic. On paper, they should have complemented each other and helped each other grow into better versions of themselves.

But neither of them felt like their best selves together.

Most of Thanwa’s limited screen time revolved around commitment issues or self-destructive coping through drugs and alcohol. More importantly, he felt disconnected from the show’s core political theme. Thanwa hardly cared about the politics that drove the story forward. If you removed him from the narrative, the main thematic arc would barely change and that’s a major structural flaw.

Instead of feeling like two halves of a greater whole, they felt mismatched at their core.

Victor – A Character Done Dirty
Victor genuinely caught my attention. His crush on Trin was adorable at first, and as the story progressed, I couldn’t help but feel he was more aligned with Trin in terms of personality, goals, and worldview.

His death made narrative sense. It was emotional, and the buildup worked. I was really teary when he died.

But what I cannot forgive is how the show handled the aftermath.

Revealing at the last minute that Victor made Thanwa promise to keep Trin out of politics felt like a cheap attempt to absolve Thanwa of responsibility. It reduced Victor’s death to a narrative device — a stepping stone to reunite Trin and Thanwa.

Why did his death erase his agency and humanity? Even if he chose to attend the protest, he did not choose to die. That distinction matters.

Dhevi – The Most Disappointing Arc
The biggest disappointment, however, was Dhevi.

She began as a quiet but powerful woman trapped in a loveless marriage with Krailert. I was rooting for her. I wanted her to reclaim her agency, pursue Veera if she truly wanted to, and walk away from a marriage that suffocated her.

Instead, the show turned her into a villain.

Krailert and Naran’s doomed romance made thematic sense to me- they were on opposite political sides. I expected tragedy rooted in ideology or timing. What I did not expect was Dhevi being villainized and being reduced to someone who traps her husband with a pregnancy.

It felt like character assassination. One of the few strong female characters was sacrificed for shock value or “realism,” and that choice immediately soured the show for me.

Final Thoughts
Maybe my disappointment comes from seeing the potential so clearly. I loved the chemistry between Naran and Krailert. I even found myself more invested in Trin and Victor than in the intended main couple.

That’s what makes it frustrating.

These are just my personal takes. Others did find meaning and beauty in the story and I genuinely do encourage people to form their own opinions. I simply couldn’t ignore the gap between what the show promised and what it ultimately delivered.

We Survived the Pain… But Did We Get the Ending We Deserved?

I liked the story, but it didn’t quite surpass the previous xianxias I’ve watched. I tend to have high expectations when it comes to this genre, especially with all the emotional depth and world-building that usually come with it.

That said, I still stayed until the end because the story gradually became more interesting. It was such a long journey filled with heartbreak and sadness. Watching two people who clearly love each other go through so much pain was honestly exhausting. I understand that it’s all part of the plot and the genre’s usual fate-driven conflicts, but I really wish they had given us more in the ending.

After everything they went through, we deserved to see more of what happened next. A fuller, more satisfying conclusion would have made the emotional suffering feel more worth it. That’s the only thing I truly wanted more of.

Nevertheless, I still enjoyed it. And if I’m being honest, if not for Arthur Chen, I probably wouldn’t have been able to finish the drama.

as a long time fan of Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, I am in love with this series

the casting is great - the actors really look the part, and perfectly embody the manga characters' little quirks and even their clothes showcases their indiviual styles

the setting is a bit different - since the original story was set in Japan, at a Japanese high school and the show is localized to China, there are obvious differences. everyone got a Chinese name:
Nozaki is now Lu Yeqi
Mikorin is Chai Ziyu
Sakura is Zuo Qiandai
Mayu is Lu Yezhen
Seo is Zhou Jieyue
Wakamatsu is Jiang Ruosong
Hori is Gu Zhengxing
Kashima is Lu Dao

and ofc the broader supporting cast (Ken-san, Miyako, and even Maeno) makes their appearance as well

due to the localization there are local customs eg. Mayu does some kind of other martial art, not judo. for some reason the high school setting was changed to university as well, which I don't mind as much as I thought I would. everyone's major fits their character well and they characters still hang out and do their usual shenanigans together thanks to their majors/clubs. since they are in uni, most of the time they are out of uniform - except Sakura, which seemed to have turned into a visual gag for each episode

I was kinda scared that with so many changes the humor would be lost as well, but the writers really managed to make the best use of the characters and the script. the first few eps loosely follow the manga's gags but there are plenty of original material in there too and so far it all has been incredibly funny

the biggest change however is that unlike the OG GSNK - where every tiny steps towards a canon ship is followed up by an immediate joke and yet another shoujo trope parody, the show actually seems to try and gives us legit romantic set up. a lot of the things that are adapted are from much later volumes and by the way things are going it seems the show might make the couples canon before the manga ever does. the biggest (and most welcome) surprise was that even Mayu and Mikorin - who get treated as a crack!ship in the manga mostly - got a few, genuinely romantic scenes for them. now I'm not gonna hold out hope that they end up together officially by the end of this show but the fact that the show treats them with the same kind of romantic set up as any of the other couples made my delusional MayuMiko shipper heart incredibly happy

one thing I am torn about is that as much as I am happy about progress between Nozaki and Sakura, Sakura seems a bit too mean at times. as I am not up to date with the manga I am not sure if all of these plotlines are entirely original or if they came from later volumes, but sometimes it gets grating that she avoids Nozaki without giving him a clear explanation. in the manga Sakura is completely aware of the fact that Nozaki CANNOT read social cues for the life of him, so expecting anything romantic from him is hopeless.. but show!Sakura seems a bit less understanding of how Nozaki's mind works. and the fact that show!Nozaki tries so hard to make her happy (and it is implied much heavier here that he does indeed like Sakura) makes it so much harder to watch Sakura act all cold and snappy with him.

Well-written and acted, Engaging political drama with a small but impactful Romance

Wow…What a fantastic drama! Let me just say, I don’t usually watch politics-focused drama as I am a romance lover. But I was browsing and came across “Mandate” that has great reviews. I finally found myself in the right mood and sat down to watch it. I am so glad I did. I hope my review does this drama justice and entices you enough to give it a chance.


Plot:
Every country probably has a politician like Dr. Nong. He’s the one who sees injustices and inequality, and wants to fight for the people. But Dr. Nong is not an idealist or typical perfect ML. He’s flawed and makes poor decisions. Throughout the drama, we see him swim though the dark and dangerous waters of corruption and run into roadblocks to achieving what he originally sets out to do. Is he able to stay true to himself? Or did he get polluted along the way? “Mandate” packs in a lot within 8 one-hour long episodes. It was able to keep me focused and engaged. Each character is layered and plays a role in the grand scheme of things. There are no fillers here. As I was reading other reviews, I learned that the drama mirrored the political landscape in Thailand. I believe many countries probably have similar issues with backdoor deals and scheming within and between political parties. Selfish and corrupted officials who claim they work for the people but are filling their own pockets. Gathering secrets, forging documents, setting traps and collecting intel on your enemies are all tactics that happen everywhere. “Mandate” is able to tell a story that feels very realistic, even though I have no way of knowing what’s actually happening behind the scenes in the real world. I don’t see any glaring plot holes either.


Acting/Characters:
Excellent acting all around! From the veterans to the younger actors. I have no one to pick on and is genuinely happy to find a drama without overdramatic lakorn acting, or cheesy and cringey BL acting. This is only Ben’s second drama after "Step by Step” and I am so impressed with his acting. “Mandate” came 2 years after “Step by Step” and I wonder if he intentionally tried to find the perfect script, thus, waited a little bit. He still has room for improvement, especially in scenes when he’s angry. Wi (Ben’s character) is smart, professional and very mature for his age. He’s born into a political family and knows all the dirty little secrets. He’s not the perfect, idealistic angel but also uses dirty tactics to get what he wants. Working alongside veteran Boy, and other veterans probably helps elevate his acting. Boy plays the main lead, Dr. Nong and he’s fantastic. Dr. Nong is rough around the edges, stubborn and quite the opposite of Wi. I also love the other two members of Team Dr. Nong, the intelligent and cool-headed social media guru Ni, and the young and enthusiastic Jump. I even love the ‘villains’, Wi’s ex + political rival, and the sassy and tenacious reporter Gale. No one is perfect in this drama, yet I like every single one of them.


Romance:
Don’t expect this to be a BL romance. The romance between Dr. Nong and Wi is slow burn and not the main focus. Even though Ben and Boy have a large age-gap in real life, you don’t feel that in the drama since Dr. Nong can be playful, and Wi is so mature. The two of them have excellent chemistry, right from the beginning when they are just political colleagues and comrades. As feelings develop, the relationship develops naturally. I was not expecting the romance to be impactful in a way that leaves a deep impression on me in the last few episodes. Romantic moments are few but scenes of the leads together are plenty. For romance lovers, we are treated to maybe 15-20 minutes of kisses, fluffiness, and intimate scenes total in the whole drama. But those moments are precious and a nice palette cleanser. They do have some emotional conversations and you can see how they support each other throughout this journey together. But with a drama that focuses on politics, romance is not immune from lies, secrets and behind-the-scenes deals.


Do I recommend “Mandate”? ABSOLUTELY, especially if you are a fan of political dramas or any of the actors. Even though the episodes are an hour-long, it goes by really fast. It’s rare for me to come across a Thai drama that has an engaging plot with great execution, characters that are interesting and well-portrayed by every actor, and a romance that is not the main focus yet delivers an impactful punch. After finishing this drama, I have to immediately tell my friends I LOVE IT! This gut reaction warrants "Mandate" at least a 9.0 rating from me. Why not a 10? Because of the ending 'spoiler' below.

I want to share, not about the events of the last episode, but how it ended. The final scene wraps up the first year of Dr. Nong’s political life, after barely survived. However, it’s very obvious that there should be a season 2. But will we have one? I sure hope so because I look forward to a reunion and happy ending. Because it doesn't totally wrap up the whole story, I am docking 1 point from my rating (for now).

This is much more than a girl going into a novel!

From the beginning, I was full of laughter and couldn't wait till the next ep, then we get our ML (Ryan!) and he's from the same world as our FL, BUT only 2 hours before her he's been there. So our FL must play out this plot to save herself until she realizes things aren't as they seem, our 2D characters seem to have a mind of their own and as she's about to meet the ruthless tyrant of them all, the Emperor, he wants nothing to do with her! until she catches the line she's said earlier, and rushes up and says "How are you?" and as the tyrant emperor eyes redded, about to cry, he says in disbelief, "Fine... thank you.. and you?" and that there was the start of it all!

I loved this version of the novel. it stuck thru till the end. I ALMOST felt bad for Prince Duan but not really. when he realized he's only a 2D character and going mad. I loved how they had their wedding. I loved how they beat the system. I cried so much and laughed even more. this is on my very top of cdramas. Ryan Lei played his role so well, I am sad to see this end but I got the best ending I could ask for... of them saying "How are you?"... "Fine, thank you... and you?"

the book ended a bit differently but I'm much happiest with this ending. I'm going to watch it again and again and read the novel again and again. Ryan is my fav actor and I can't wait till his next drama.

this is a 10/10 for me and beyond!!!

Not A Bad Watch!

For People who want to watch or watching this drama, they definitely didn't follow the Manhwa - I was astonished because almost all the things were different from the manhwa so the question will be " did they fuck the drama? " - No they didn't, the leads somehow made it into a not a bad watch ones. One can even say that the Leads Carried it on their shoulders though they could've toned down the so called cute moments. And I liked how they actually shown the kid and the b'day celebration at the last episodes rather than stick the end as bland one without showing the baby. I loved they showed the actual baby.

So Basically like
Did they follow the Manhwa ? - NO
Is this a Bad Drama to watch ? - NO
Is this one of the best Romcom ? - NO

But if you didn't read the manhwa or if you don't care about the manhwa to drama truthfulness or just want a good romcom then go for it.

Sparkly, Splendid, Supreme!

Originally came here for both the ML and FL but stayed for everything else.

As a Cheng Lei and Wang Chu Ran fan, I was here to support my lovelies. But this drama didn't just astound me with the visuals, it gave me that chemistry I deserve. I sometimes have urges to forward moments of mains because I don't like them, but not this one. I love theeemm!

Characters Review. Wanying is a magnanimous character - typical of a female hero lead all kind, courageous, and smart. You would expect she would plan things ahead because she has that "foresight". Xiahou Dan is not your typical hero - all benevolent and noble. He was disturbed and he was alone for a long time. The fact that he was in the story as a teenager added a lot of depth to his transmigrated character. So, in the end, he didn't only portray what is expected of a hero, he also lived every step to survive and to attain salvation in the form of Wanying. Xie Yong Er also was an unexpected transformation. I didn't see myself liking her because she was supposed to aid the Prince Duan but she changed - which is a good step they did. Xiahou Bo for a villain was formidable for a 2D character. This added more interest to the story because despite not having "foresight", he was able to have his own mind. It was like a 3 advanced players versus 1 beginner level but I guess he was supposed to really be that smart because he was, after all, the male lead. I hate him by the way! Haha. It means the actor was good.

Plot Review. I can be quite harsh with plots. I dropped a lot of stories simply because they couldn't meet my expectations even if the actors were my faves. But this one really didn't disappoint. This gave me a new breath to transmigration stories. Initially, it was fun as it could get. I had a lot of laughter with the hotpot sessions, fake break-ups x losing favor scenes, Bei Shu disguise, and Eunuch An. And like we could all predict, laughter soon turned into tears, because, hey, how could there be no progress. So, sacrifices had to be made. Things had to go South. And, they would eventually solve it. Sometimes, I just give up how they solve things because we can never know with Chinese dramas. There seems to be no way, but there will be. The same thing happened here. Maybe the odd thing is, there should have been a better way to solve the poison problem. The mute girl was quite off and impractical. It lacks motive. For the ending, this drama actually gave a closure, allowing them to meet again in modern times unlike some that leaves the story in the book. The snippet from Zhan Sang's diary at the last episode also helped us see the story in the perspective of ML. It was the perfect snippet for the ending.

Music Review. They usually play the theme song when the mains are either kissing or reuniting and again, this time, I didn't skip those scenes because I like both of them so I listened to the songs and loved especially the theme song.

Overall Review. I give this a 10 primarily to boost its rating hahahahaha, don't judge me. As I said, I have my own preferences haha! My baobeis performed splendindly well! Plus, it gave us a new outlook towards transmigration stories, introduced peak casting, and developed character depths!

I know it's not for everyone, but it is for me. 🥴 So, I get to have the say!

Started off good but got boring overtime

I started this drama cz i heard gangster x cafe owner🤭 and also cz of FirstKhaotung. Loved episode 1 soo much i put it on hold to binge watch but then i couldn't control myself so watching on air again. It did get a little boring in episode 2 but then it got better. Personally i feel this series would make a much better webtoon than a series cz cats play a important role here. Usually in the animal movies I've watched they add expressions and mouth movement to the animals which is not the case here so that felt kinda weird for me. What they've done is not bad just that it's not what I'm used to. Another thing that's kinda new here is the Lynx is literally a cat in human form not a guy who looks like a cat. The way Khao stands, turns everything is pretty much cat like also the change in scent when in love. That's something new.

I think ep 2 is the only boring episode so far the rest of the episodes are soo damn cute❤️❤️. I think this is the 1st time firstkhao are not lying or hiding things from each other in a drama😆. Ahem can i say i am shipping Doc. Pom and Leo. Ik that won't come true cz both have their partners🤭 guess it's a ghost ship for now. They're both soo adorable when they're jealous haha i love it!!

Edit: that was my opinion around ep 5 but the show went downhill after they got together. It was boring and draggy just pure fluff and it had nothing that made me want more. I forced myself to finish it.

- When i hear mafia/debt collector i expect some push and pull like we see in other dramas which was absent here
- Lynx's original career kinda got sidelined in the show. I was expecting a bit more clarity on that side. I really dont feel lynx liked the cats enough to choose them as a career.
- the entire show felt repetitive overtime. There was no spice no twist no nothing it was as flat as it could be.

I feel it would be an ok watch if you like pure fluff no story or if u watched it on air but binging it would be hard

Ancient Bracelet” is a story based on the fulfillment of a vow that is connected to a bracelet.
In the drama, the protagonists reverse time twice. Each time, they promise that they will not interfere in each other’s lives, but they immediately break that promise. This does not make sense. If they had intervened because of unavoidable circumstances, it would have been more understandable. Therefore, the time reversal felt unnecessary and illogical, especially in the final part of the drama.
What I enjoyed most about the drama was the chemistry between the leads. That was the only reason I continued watching it until the end.

Too Many Filters, Not Enough Depth

Before diving into this drama, ask yourself:


A. Have you read the manhwa?

B. Do you hate romcoms?

C. Are you a modern feminist?

D. Do you enjoy old-school romcoms and need a filler?

If you answered A, B, or C, maybe skip this one.

This drama sticks to the classic chaebol-meets-Cinderella formula, complete with a one-night stand that leads to pregnancy. Groundbreaking? Not really. Deep? Nope. But if you’re in the mood for something light and easy, it might just hit the spot.

The leads are refreshingly in their 30s and 40s, which is a nice change from the usual 25-year-old CEOs we’re somehow supposed to believe. That said, even these “mature” characters can’t resist acting like teenagers once love and romantic rivals enter the picture. Ah, clichés—can’t live with them, can’t escape them.

Speaking of clichés, the second male lead is... a lot. He’s the kind of character that makes you want to fast-forward, and his excessive screentime takes away from what could’ve been the heart of the story: the leads building their relationship organically and navigating pregnancy together. Oh, and yes, there’s an evil sister-in-law scheming to take over the company. Because of course there is.

The supporting cast checks all the usual boxes: a quirky sidekick for comic relief, supportive colleagues, and a team director who’s self-serving but not entirely awful. They’re fine, but nothing to write home about.

As for production, don’t expect glammed-up wardrobes or high-budget sets. It’s a modest production, and that’s okay. What’s not okay? The overuse of filters. If you’re going to feature a more mature cast (which is a great idea, by the way), just embrace it! The blurry lenses are doing no one any favors.

In short, it’s a drama that knows its lane and stays in it. If you’re here for a breezy, old-school romcom with a mature twist, it might just be your cup of tea. Just don’t expect it to reinvent the wheel.
