This was a crazy ride.
The plot? Abysmal. The chemistry? 1000% on fire.
If you’re looking for a tightly woven story with logic and consistency, this is not it. But—and this is a big but—if you can turn off your brain, you’re in for nonstop laughs and mild hyperventilation from the chemistry between everyone.
At one point early on, I genuinely thought Wu Siyuan had a crush on Xie Xinxu. That’s how unhinged the vibes were.
I binged it in two days. It was so bad at times that it circled right back around to being good. Common sense was lost and never recovered, but entertainment was consistently delivered. The drama is incredibly rewatchable because the people making it clearly didn’t take themselves too seriously—they fully leaned into every trope imaginable, while the actors still gave it their all.
If you want something light, ridiculous, and wildly entertaining, I honestly recommend it.

Stylistic Directing, Sincerity, & a Realistic Couple
This is the first review I've ever done for a vertical drama. Normally these are short simple watches perfect for low-attention spans or palette cleansers, but this drama is different. The setting, directing, acting, and storyline is all amazing. The director is heavily influenced by 90s Hong Kong Cinema. They make references throughout the drama even reenacting the motorcycle scene from A Moment of Romance. There's a poster for In the Mood for Love at the inn as well. The directing style is heavily influenced by this creating beautiful color grading, ethereal filters, lighting, etc. There are split shots and combo shots to include more scenes that normally aren't included in vertical format.
The story is genuinely fun even though some aspects are cliche. It's elevated by realistic and grounded characters that feel multi-dimensional. They have a healthy and equal relationship with good communication and clear boundaries. There are some cute moments or RR throughout as well. The intimacy is so sweet; there are so many warm hugs, cuddles when sick, etc. They're a very realistic couple in love. Most vertical dramas focus on one aspects of relationships, but this one follows through with actual romance and love.
The addition and heartfelt sincerity regarding the ML's grandma and FL's friend was lovely to see as well. It added even more heart to the story.
Bonus points for not whitewashing the characters! The ML has gorgeous tan skin and they didn't bleach it and instead used it to match the beautiful warm color grading. The Hong Kong setting added so much life to the story, it was a character of its own.

IS THAT ALL?? THAT'S IT??
I'm not saying that the movie is bad. But it's a sore disappointment for me.Hear me out. Put down the pitch forks and tiki torches especially Caskey and Jos fans.
Good sides
I the think the concept was a good one
First the acting is very solid from everyone as expected. Chemistry was good too.
The music isn't that special but you can't also write it off
I think overall it's quite enjoyable if you block out your brains and decide not to question the plot.
The Bad and Ugly.
The plot was full of holes that were so glaring
The fact that the aesthetics of the very first trailer which is a chef's kiss is so different from the end product is what bothers me a lot. The very first trailer showed a darker aesthetic and the fact that it out very little was what got me hyped for this series. The shift to a light tone and then try to take itself seriously was just a letdown. It lowered the stakes of the series dramatically.
I mean vampires immune to sunlight, garlic and other traditional methods was a great idea and a good script could have given both villain, anti-hero and protagonists higher stakes but GMMTV had to GMMTV themselves again and ruin it.
A huge plot hole was the villain. I feel like the Apasiri's character (Thara) was just shoved into the twist as the villain just got a twist sake. There was no villain arc or foreshadowing and so she felt like a last minute decision just to get a villain. Her character was just wasted cos Apasiri played the villain to perfection but then the script was huge letdown. Even her powers of precognition and recognition were poorly mishandled.
Another problem I had was the fact that the issue of the Golden Blood was nothing but just barely bones.
-How/When did the vampires first discover this golden blood??
-Who was the first vampire to discover it??
- How does it work for vampires??
-What chemical properties made it "golden"??
-Why was it also dangerous??
A whole lot of questions with this golden blood.
I get that certain things in movies must remain a mystery but this isn't one of them. The series is about the Golden Blood and it's even in the title.
There are a whole lot of questions and problems with the series. I didn't enjoy it at all.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT FOR YOU. YOU'LL ENJOY IT IF YOU CAN SHUT YOUR BRAINS OR YOU'RE JUST A CRAZED FAN OF THE CAST WHO ENJOYES ANYTHING REGARDLESS OF QUALITY.
Shut your brains out and you'll get a blast

WHAT THE FUCK DID I SUBJECT MY EYES TO??!!
First off, to call this movie crazy is an understatement. This movie is bat-shit, cuckoo for puff puff, crack head wrapped in a world of blood and gore insane. When I saw the cover of the movie, I thought it would be your run-of-the-mill bully gets comeuppance movie. HOW WRONG WAS I.
Everyone in the movie except perhaps the parents, grandad and the kid sis of Haruka, everyone else in the small town has lost their goddamned braincells.
Almost all of the parents in the village are consumed with themselves and their expectations of their teenage children. Those that show a bit of concern are massive enablers. Do whatever you want parents.
And don't get me started on the teacher. I know a teacher's job is a herculean one - I know cos I'm one myself - but this teacher is totally useless. Though she was bullied when she was a student herself, she should have used her past to become better and stopped the bullies but she just kept quiet and just puked her guts out in almost all her scenes. She's just as bad as her students or even worst than they are.
Then the students or do I call them Teenagers from Hell. You can't even root for anyone. At one point, I was wishing Haruka would just lose control of her psychotic state and just set the whole village on fire 🔥🔥.
Anyway, the movie is quite good but don't go in expecting a rom-com.

I tried to continue after finishing Season 1
More of the same from Season 1. You can not watch S2 without watching S1. The story continues, and gets more bizarre. S1 ended with a supposedly cliff hanger. Maybe it would have been better if FX was not revived .....just saying. This time even Lin Wan Er lost her allure from S1. At least there was some emotional depth from her in S1. I just could not continue as I did for the entire 46 episodes of S1, just to catch more glimpses of her.

It starts with a bride-to-be in a red dress seeing revenge at a CGI location mimicking Court of the Fountain in the city of Minas Tirith!? During the course of this 30+ episodes it only gets further away from being a remotely coherent story.
But if you are willing to give it a try, or not try to reason with the unreasonable, there is an exceptional leading man who burns both ends of the candle portraying a king who ruled nations but not himself. Yet still, it is imbued with profound anxiety, jealousy, constraint, angst, and a commanding, yet nuanced, regal posture.
There is also the question of quite what makes a family – how strong loyalties can be without a blood tie, how weak they can be despite them.
On-screen chemistry gets better in later parts of the series. undecided on the remaining 7 or so episodes as it's already been written that the ending follows the "Tragic path" - it already feels unearned when it betrays the story's established tone, and most importantly the character development.

It's Hard to Condense 1,350 Minutes down to 103
I can't be objective, because I watched the drama, and it fleshed out the story in a way the movie can't. This is the Cliff Notes version. Without Yang Yang.Angelababy is anime pretty. I hadn't watched anything with her before, although many of the supporting actors were familiar (waves to Tan Song Yun and Li Xian).

Professors Fall in Love
I despise lies, manipulation, and playing with people's lives, so it was difficult for me to fully appreciate the drama when BOTH sets of the destined pairs were deep in deception. The Good: Esther Yu and Vin Zhang had amazing chemistry. The ML was masterful at slowly warming to the FL's tactics. The FL was the right blend of silly and smart to be able to bypass the ML's defenses and win him over. Both actors made the drama watchable. I know many find Esther Yu's baby voice and melodramatics irritating, but she reminds me of my baby sister (only not quite as hyper), and I find her entertaining. I also liked the professions depicted: ornithology and botany. The FL's styling was perfect for a beauty blogger.
The Bad: The secondary couple should have had their story cut in half (at least). Ideally, they wouldn't have had much screen time. The constant captions reminding the viewer that the birds were CGI and no animals were harmed during production were distracting. Flash those notices at the beginning of an episode; viewers are intelligent enough to realize you didn't mass kill a bunch of birds for the story. Also, the bird-stealing gang storyline was cringeworthy.

Not sure about the hype.
I started watching this for its high ratings. The starting was promising. By Ep 10, I was struggling. The whole premise of the "Intelligence Unit" reflects this series' hype and not intelligence. Somehow Chen Ping Ping knows everything. Somehow. The most fascinating aspect of the whole series was CPP's wheelchair. A palace that is empty but for the Emperor, who is so self absorbed. A woman immortalized by a memorial tablet. A Saintess perfect in the role of the harlot but totally lacking in seductive charms. The hero who spends his childhood in the countryside and then literally walked perfectly suited into his adult role as martial arts exponent extraordinaire, fitting perfectly into the imperial world of subterfuge and political under world. He somehow has incredible attributes and manages to outwit and outfight every baddie thrown into the mixture with irritating aplomb. Mostly he out mouth rather than do.
Political intrigues that starts off intriguing but culminates in yawns.
A sickly princess who craves chicken legs .......she was actually the brightest spot in the whole series.
Did I look forward to Season 2? Maybe. Just to tell myself that I may be wrong. That Season 1 is the lead up to a huge season finale .....

Binged this one in three days and haven't regretted a single minute of it. Can't deny that I will always fall for the "enemies to lovers" trope.
The introduction of every important character in the first episode was very strong and I might have been a bit too impressed with it, expecting the rest of the drama to be flawless. That was not the case. But those were just visual edting issues (weird fast scene switches, plastic petals) and had nothing to do with the story itself. On the other hand the drama also presented expressive camera settings and cinematography with vigorous intentions. And damn, well selected, beautiful, detailed costumes! I loooved the winter edition.
The plot, the twists and the overall mystery were through and through enjoyable - of course, it had its ups and downs with the suspense but the calmer moments were compensated with sweet interactions between the leads.
The cast was phenomenal. Ding YuXi, the ML, exceeded my expectations with his performance of a cold-hearted, cunning military officer, never showing his true intentions, reducing his facial expressions to a minimum, yet still able to tell the viewer what's going on. Every move, every gesture and powerful stand demonstrated grace and dignity. A big part played his deep voice, too. There were alot of different facets. From authoritarian to collected, steady and soft. Most times calm, seldomly loud, but even then it was composed, never jarring.
Ancy Deng, the FL, played a really good counterpart, never letting her other half down, never inferior to Ding YuXi either. Displaying a strong woman in pursuing her passion of solving criminal cases and fight injustice. She was fun, never being shy with examining corpses or dashing forward into the next case.
The chemistry between the leads was endearing and on point. And thank god no out of place comediac inserts. They remained in their roles, stayed serious, focused and still managed to show affection, romance, intimacy and light-hearted moments.
But not only the two main leads did a great job, but every other supportive crew member as well. The FL's family, the queen dowager, the princess, the prince, the ministers and all the others. Together they created a convincing atmopshere of palace matters and intrigues. I especially liked that even these supportive characters had more than just one side to them.
The drama will surely stay with me for a while. And even though I almost never cried during my watch, I felt with and for the characters.

Some dramas entertain. A rare few illuminate…
Set during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, this drama could easily have fallen into the trap of being another historical epic heavy on costumes and light on substance. Instead, it delivers something far more ambitious — and far more meaningful. It is breathtaking in its commitment to historical authenticity, not just in aesthetics but in its portrayal of governance, reform, and the fragile art of holding a state together during turbulent times.A Drama That Understands Governance
What has impressed me most — and what I reflected on in my recent Strategic Teams post — is how deeply this series understands the work of governance. It doesn’t romanticise leadership. It doesn’t flatten history into hero worship. Instead, it shows:
• the complexity of decision‑making
• the tension between moral ideals and political realities
• the weight of responsibility carried by those who choose to serve
• the quiet, unglamorous labour of reform
This is a drama that treats governance not as a backdrop, but as a living, breathing challenge — one that demands courage, restraint, wisdom, and sometimes painful compromise.
Historical Characters Brought to Life
The show’s greatest strength is how it brings actual historical figures to life with nuance and emotional depth. These aren’t cardboard cut-outs of “good” or “bad” officials. They are human — flawed, principled, ambitious, weary, hopeful.
The performances, especially from the Wuyue leads, are exceptional. Their portrayals carry a sense of dignity and restraint that feels true to the era, yet emotionally accessible to a modern audience.
A Visual and Emotional Feast
The production design is meticulous. The lighting — especially in the intimate indoor scenes — is atmospheric and painterly.
Ceremonial and wedding stills are rich with cultural detail. Ensemble scenes capture the scale and uncertainty of a fractured era. Every frame feels intentional, reinforcing the drama’s themes of unity, resilience, and the pursuit of stability in chaotic times.
Why This Drama Matters Today
What elevates Swords into Ploughshares beyond entertainment is its relevance. The governance lessons embedded in its storytelling resonate strongly with modern organisational life:
• the importance of ethical leadership
• the need for clear purpose during instability
• the value of steady, principled reform
• the power of listening, humility, and collective responsibility
It reminds us that good governance is not a slogan — it is a discipline, a practice, and often a struggle.
Final Thoughts
This is not a “slow” drama.
It is a thoughtful one.
It rewards viewers who appreciate depth, historical fidelity, and leadership stories that don’t shy away from complexity.
For anyone interested in history, governance, or simply beautifully crafted storytelling, Swords into Ploughshares is a standout of the year.

A Familiar Story Told Exceptionally
I enjoyed this. While there were a few ridiculous stage moves and props, I felt the script and narrative were strong, so it didn't matter. I even read part of the manhua because I that connected with the onscreen performance. I enjoyed the roles, believing the performers played them well and seamlessly. The character dynamics worked so well for me that I was rooting for the leads the entire time. When one of them burned their rivals, I even cheered. The basic storyline isn’t new—it’s about love and betrayal, revenge, and hidden identities. However, the way the leads delivered their stories made the narrative engaging and impactful.

A Powerhouse On-Screen Dynamic
This drama is one of my top favorites starring Li Fei. I absolutely love Hu Yiyao too, and seeing her paired with Li Fei was a dream. But setting aside my personal admiration, their chemistry and on-screen dynamic are undeniably powerful. This is a revenge-driven, palace-themed drama with an engaging and emotionally resonant backstory. I connected deeply with the protagonist, Zhao Ge Fu, and found her journey captivating. I especially appreciated the character development and interactions—it even inspired me to start reading the novel because of the lasting impression the drama left on me.
