The plot of ataru is clearly strange however there is more to it than just a savant syndrome person solving cases. there is a whole other premise behind it that reveals ataru's history and what he went through. by the end of the show you come to a more clear understanding about who ataru is and what he wants to do and how his childhood was. This drama is not just about read more the case solving and this is why it was a rather unique plot for me. Sure in the beginning you cannot believe that he can solve the crimes just for that but after you come go deeper in the story then you understand why he can do it.

The acting was superb. kuriyama chiaki is an okay actress but i feel her role in this with her other roles dun have much of a difference. However most of the other actors did a great job with their roles. You could definitely find them convincing.

The music of the drama, i do not remember it and it did not really bother me from focusin so i suppose it was complimenting it. As far as rewatching goes. Once you have watched it all, it would be hard to watch again with the same suspence.

Personally i'm a fan of crime/investigation shows and this was a refreshing change from usual crime solving "structure".
SETTING: At times it was emotional and serious yet the characters and their relationships were fun and humorous. The solving i quite enjoyed especially how i, like the rest of cast was left to figure out the meanings behind Atarus clues.
STORY: The idea was unique especially the origin of Ataru and his life read more and how he become to be talented in investigations.
CASES: All the cases are labeled "waste dumps" aka something police wouldn't bother investigating because foul play doesn't seem to be involved. In that aspect the solving of these cases become more heartfelt as the (dead)victims are not considered victims of crime in the first place.
ACTING: it was good, Ataru himself was well played i didn't feel like he was overacting or trying too hard to be himself. Emotionally i think everyone did a great job especially after the cast begains to understand what Ataru goes through . The chief, loved him, he was the result of good casting. Lead females brother...hehe i don't about acting but he has been noted.

if you enjoy crime/investigation shows i wouldn't be too quick to rule this one out. Don't give up just after the first ep that would be a mistake there are great shows that start not so impressively only to impress you in the near future.

Both male characters are a little odd and make strange hand movements to solve cases. They are both followed by females with a pure heart that have a male boss. The relations and dynamics are quite similar. Kagi no Kakatta heya is more episodic then ataru.

Both star eccentric geniues that are no affilated with the detectives professional, but help them solve cases. Ataru centers more general cases instead of cases with weather elements.

I am currently watching this because of Kitamura Kazuki and Kuriyama Chiaki, Kitamura's character here is very different from the drama "Hirugao", i didn;t expect that he's going to be a comedian here. :)) and ofcourse Chiaki is still awesome. :) gonna update after watching the whole season.

done watching and it was really good. Next: Ataru movie~ Nanone~ XD

Me too; I didn't even realise I did it until my husband saw Ataru doing the hand gesture and said "oh, you do that when you're concentrating on something you're reading or watching or if you're really trying hard to remember something, it's quite cute." I just stared at him and he added with a shrug "didn't you know?" So am a little freaked out too because no, I didn't know I did it.....WHY do I do it?

Yeah I watched it too and I was kinda disappointed that it was like 80% flash back... but I guess that's where the second episode of the special will make up for that.

yeah, unfortunately though I haven't been able to find the 2nd episode anywhere subbed. I found it raw so that'll have to suffice for now.

I thought the premise was quite promising, but after getting thru the 1st episode, I wasn't charmed and it failed to convince me. There was just too much lacking and I've been spoiled by recent dramas I've completed that were really of high caliber.

Maybe it was the style of directing that scenes feel disconnected. Maybe it was the characterization of a savant brought onto a criminal investigation scenario that failed to convince me. A pretty female trying to prove her niche as an authentic detective was too bland. The writing and the dialogue feels ordinary given such a premise and genre. And maybe at the basic level, it was the acting itself that didn't impress me. I was commenting on my 1st episode watch since I've stop from there. If there was any improvement in later episodes, I can't speak for it as it did not develop any pull for me to keep watching.

if you've only watched the first episode, then you've only barely scratched the surface of this drama.
Yes the idea of a savant being involved in police investigations is unconvincing, just about everyone who has watched the drama feel the same way, that's why it's 'fiction'. But for me, what really makes this drama work is not really the concept, but the main characters & their chemistry, and if you had watched more then you would've come to understand the complexity of Ataru's character. Some of the cases are were also very interesting.
I think the cast did a good job portraying their characters in the ways they were written. Nakai's acting in particular is just superb, portraying a person who has Savant syndrome without any prior knowledge or understanding of the disease whatsoever, yet he was able portray such characteristics so convincingly.

personally, I think you should give this drama another go and watch the rest of it, I think the writing does improve further into the series with more interesting cases and improved chemistry between the main characters. the whole premise with Ataru's character and his past and relationship with his parents was very well written. The complexity of his character and the bond he has with his parents is really one of the main aspects of this drama that draws you in. However the writers deliberately piece together his past slowly little by little until it was fully explored in later episodes.

Of course it's up to you whether you want to watch the rest of the drama or not...I'm just recommending you to continue with the drama because I think things do become more interesting in later episodes and the writing eventually becomes more substantial.

I appreciate your passion for recommending this drama. You know there are times when you have a particular reason and expectations for selecting a drama to watch. That's exactly what happened to me when I picked up Ataru. I had certain expectations and it wasn't met watching its 1st episode. I got an inkling of the back story they might try to build regarding his family history from the initial episode. I'm neither demeaning Nakai's acting but I personally did not find it anything noteworthy, it's not like there was any nuanced to him acting a savant character (FYI, this is also my 1st exposure to Nakai's acting). I could probably get back to this drama later on like some of those I've also put on-hold.

I personally have seen other actors portraying characters who have Savant syndrome and I have to say, Nakai's portrayal of this particular actor is really one of the most convincing I have seen, this is why I am so impressed with his acting in this. When I watch the drama, I don't see a actor portraying Ataru, I see Ataru himself.
If you compare Nakai's acting to his other previous roles (that is if you get the chance to watch his other dramas), then anyone with the degree of familiarity of his acting roles, would probably agree that Ataru is without a doubt one of his most remarkable & commendable roles.
Some of his other acting roles were rather bland in comparison to be perfectly honest.

Ok, I do hope you will change your mind & watch the rest of the drama...but again, it's your choice.
