Try

1) Karan Johar's Kuchh Kuchh Hota hai - it's very silly but entertaining. I have seen it a hundred times. A perfect example of an over the top musical. (You can also try other movies by the same director) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEom4TcTH3Y
2) Kahani- has a very strong kahani (story line) http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xq4zz1_kahaani-2012-dvd-rip-with-english-subtitles-part-1-telly-tv-com_shortfilms#.Uc9OXjvTwlE
3)Dil Chahat hai - Bromance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nvu4FNVrOJA
4) Oye lucky lucky oye- I loved it. http://onlinetvlive.blogspot.in/2008/11/oye-lucky-lucky-oye-2008-hindi-movie.html
5) Jane tu ya jane na- a very sweet romantic comedy. https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B77SOzle3QkCRS1HTmYyeHA1ZDg
6) Band baja baraat -it's very funny and has a nice script. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbAPSdzTyDY
7) Kal ho na ho (again karan johar) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emjWNrD6rQ0
8) Taare zameen par- very touching and the acting is amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bev--7zthI
9) English Vinglish- it's fresh and I think it deserved more fame than Barfi. http://itvmovie.eu/movie/view/4668/1/1/English-Vinglish.html
10) 3 Idiots - personally I didn't like it all. But you should not miss it because it's very famous. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-baGENwrnU
11) Barfi-I'm not a fan of this one. I think it's overhyped , unoriginal and full of bad acting. But it still has nice music and mesmerizing cinematography. http://www.onlinemovies9.com/barfi-2012-hindi-2/#

I would recommend going from most recent to oldest movie, and I would go for the rom-coms first before trying out the others (unless you like drama). Here are some older movies that are considered hits. 70s movies were full of action as opposed to recent movies with romance. 1978 - Don 1977 - Amar Akbar Anthony 1975 - Sholay I haven't gotten around to watching movies of the current decade, but hopefully this is recent enough and will give you a good start on Bollywood movies!

Awesome recommendations! I second all of them except Love Aaj Kal, I haven't seen it.

Thank you! I hope people will consider South Asian dramas and movies as much as they love East Asian dramas and movies.

I just watched Love Aaj Kal a few days ago. I thought it was nice, but it doesn't hold up to the other movies I mentioned. I guess it would be comparable to Jab We Met.
Ohh there are many. What kind of genre do u like? ^^

Agree! Especially movies - now south Asian movie quality is improved! For dramas it'd be hard to find correct one for newbies. Lots of nonsense is there in those dramas.
Jab we met I'm sure I'll love it.

I prefer romantic comedies and family films, but that's because I usually watch Hindi films with my family, so we choose happy films. I did watch Black, Ghajini, and Kahaani, which are a little darker, but I liked the storylines. The violence was a bit too much for me. I'll try to take some time to watch some of the highly rated darker films on my own.
I just watched Salaam Namaste and rewatched Mohabbatein. 2005 - Salaam Namaste I thought it was OK. I think the lead roles have good chemistry, but they're trying too hard to be Western. 2000 - Mohabbatein - Haven't watched this one since its release. Loved it back then when I was a child, still love it now. I will never get bored of watching this movie. I haven't gotten emotional over a movie since Toy Story 3.
I just watched Jolly LLB.... a very simple Hindi movie. Not a westernised Hindi movie which i hate so much.
latest krish 3, Boss,
My favorite Indian movies are Raavan and Jodhaa Akbar! They're great and I love the soundtracks.

This song is so old, but it never fails to get stuck in my head >.<
I love it sooooo much.

My favorite Bollywod movie is Pyaasa. Ahhhh, I love Guru Dutt.
I haven't watching Hindi movies in a such a LONG time! Recommend me some good movies (recent)
