I never subscribed to Neflix or Prime, but I was subscribed to Viki while I was in the USA and it *never* automatically dubbed anything.
So: Are you somewhere outside of the USA? And is there some kind of setup on your account?

(Now I am not subscribed to Viki bc I am overseas visiting my family and Viki is not available here. I havent seen any platforms that automatically dub. I have seen dubbing by ppl on Daily motion and Bil Bili, and never in English, it is always Tagalog or Hindi etc).

@JulySnow2 Did you see their replies??? I had no idea that dubbing was automatic on those platforms. Wow that's a murder... Instantly eliminating audience's connection with that part of the world

Unfortunately.... since I have lived in the USA .... imo the USA is already so dumbed down and so drugged down that it is entirely possible that many ppl CANNOT read the subtitles... or just find it TOO DIFFICULT... it requires more brain activity that ppl are used to...

and yeah, it is also cultural whitewashing, totally ignoring that we are watching something from another world, and PREVENTING us thinking about those people,

bc in the USA, the center of the world is the USA and the rest of the world is some speck somewhere far away from where we bring oil and other resources, and if we bomb them to get it, etc, that's not a big deal

Listening in Korean would bring the drama closer to people's hearts and they would start making connections with that part of the world - and dubbing totally eliminates that

The foundation of this drama is POLYGAMY - Chairman Brutus has two wives, and he keeps playing them against each other, and that is how HE stays in power :)

So this drama is an excellent demonstration why polygamy is so pathetic and produces idiotically spoiled wicked males and super wicked crafty mean nasty and STUCK POWERLESS women

I cannot think of any country in the world that has polygamy and is doing well
(I am not counting Arabs bc I dont see anything significant coming out of those countries except oil)
E.g. deep inherent corruption in Africa has much to do with polygamy, as a child growing up you get trained in favoritism, cheating, lying, backstabbing, lack of loyalty, hatred, animosity, competition and fights, adn you NEVER learn about true love, care and dedication, ie CORRUPTION STARTS ON THE BASIC LEVEL OF FAMILY, and women are nothing, and it is super deeply ingrained. I think Africa cannot move one inch forward until it cleans that up. Is it too late already?...

I think there are some profound dialogues that show extreme complexity and nuance of the characters - it is a shocking surprise that happens rarely but when it does it is super mind blowing - for example, serial killer JR giving her some a speech about how he must have a wife who loves him and how important love is -!!! then HJ's speeches to JR and others when he was asking whose son he is, etc the whole HJ anguish and inner conflicts are very well portrayed - And it is exciting to see a new star being born, HJ actor.
Many characters in this drama have complexity and paradox - HJ is super complex character, has some great lines, and has a great actor in the role, which makes it interesting; and then other characters, e.g. the fat loud female secretary seduced the skinny polished James

As for bad: The drama is a low level trash, everyone is a serial killer or a victim seeking revenge. The drama is based on polygamy and Chairman playing his two wives to make sure he stays on top. The basic plot is a very raw soap.
Also, many characters are cartoon simple - YN is just evil and dumb, it is too bad a new unskilled actor is in that role... ,
The bad part is MJ actor who is still too stiff. But his role SHOULD BE complex and he jsut cannot pull it off...
Chloe is also made too simple and I suspect that the actress can do more than just looking nervous the entire time. Chloe script is unfortunately dumbed down and made her into a 1-D character which has no complexity. Just lately, it got better as Chloe is starting to feel compassion for HJ's suffering. Otherwise, we NEVER see Chloe wrestling with any inner conflicts. She is too simple, as IF she has no inner conflicts.

The plus of it is that the drama seems genuinely Korean. This drama has nothing polished to appease Western audience. The actors are not plasticized models. The authenticity is a plus of this drama. The raw crude Chairman Brutus is super real. Chairman Brutus is just evil - but his actions are varied and the actor is great, he really conveys that kind of "hot uncivilized brute patriarch from the lowest parts of society" so that character is actually interesting to watch. He is a red neck Korean way and he is super interesting.
The polite meek wannabe-backstabber Aunt is very real too. That is one very good actress, despite the polished look of that character, there is a sense of a live person underneath. The crude primitive tenacious villain JR is also quite genuine - she has her lover next to her and watches over her son and then tries to steal as much as she can.

Gosh the running away of JM was the stupidest scenes EVER
JM and BH holding a reunion while the criminals are after them... JM running in high heels and not even thinking of ditching to the side or something
and then BH saves her from WTOD by hugging her in front of the WTOD

Chairman is a greedy old scrooge. So he knew that baby BH was floating around orphanages and did NOTHING to look for him? Hoping that BH will never show up again so Chairman gets to keep the checkbook with $2 billion? I reallly reallllly dislike Chairman. Such a fat slime.

The plot is beautiful
but the filming... I could not take it. And the music... ah so over the top and distracting.

So I just read the plot and fast forwarded through the movie.

Filmed properly, this would be a masterpiece.

True, it reeks of that possibility, esp since the person said they will rewatch with subs,
but there could be other reasons...

That person might have a poor eyesight and/or brain and does better with audio than having to read the subs at the same time as watching the video. The subs can be tiny, are super fast and I often do not even have the time to read them and have to rewind. Not everyone has the patience for that.

Also, reading the subs takes away from watching the video. Sometimes I watch in Korean - which i do NOT speak - without the subs just so that I can SEE how they act.

But I would never watch it dubbed, it sounds ... offensive lmao it is so counterfeit lmao

I think it is good to present the concept that preferring it dubbed rather than subbed is often a case of ignorance - since most ignorant ppl did not even think of that - but we have to be careful not to make it seem we are sure this particular person was ignorant.... Maybe they were .. and maybe they were not... :)

And fyi most dubbed are in Tagalog (Philippines) and Hindi (India), very poor places. One reason I suspect is that not everyone might be literate enough to read the subtitles...

Assuming you can read the subtitles - then - Why watch in dubbing, then you lose the flavor of the drama, you lose the ACTING via voice!!!!!! that is so crucial for the drama!!!!! you lose the video since their mouths and the words do not match lmao
and you dont learn Korean cultural subleties so important for the drama.

I am educated enough now to know when the subs are not true to what they are saying. For example, the drama ppl usually say "Oppa" and the subtitle shows them calling ppl by name. Nope.

The "oppa" concept is very important and does not exist in English.

YOU GOTTA WATCH THE ORIGINAL, and if you cannot see the subtitles, then try to make them larger, there is usually the setting.

If you just cannot read, for whatever reason, then you ARE stuck with dubbed...

Chairman in young body is not changing much internally, he is still too often behaving as a ruthless scrooge

The drama is mostly about mind games between people but we also need to see their emotional and spiritual growth, their character growth

So far, the Chairman grew one tiny bit to take grandma out and BUY her stuff... but no more than that... and his dumb son became slightly wiser... but other than that - nobody grew
Ah yeah, his evil daughter got even more evil but that does NOT count as character growth lmao

The evil daughter lies so much that it is hard to tell when she tells the truth ONCE, e.g. about T framing her. I wonder how Chairman concluded he should investigate
