Let me get this out of the way first. Nobody growing up in Korea would think that a marriage of convenience would ever be the simple answer to life’s problems. With all these family obligations, societal expectations and unspoken rules, it’s ridiculous to imagine so. There are so many great things about this drama that are so different. No one pays attention to the CEO. The feminine representations are the best. The chirpy office girl is so sardonic. The women treat each other with respect.

Ji Ho – female lead
Ji Ho is a wonderful Kdrama heroine. She has this beautiful inner strength and the ability to laugh at herself and own up to her crazy actions. She actually runs very hot and cold like a Korean male hero. Towards the end of the drama she really has gender role reversals and is totally tough.

Se Hee
“Do you know how much stress people like you give me?”

Se Hee’s honesty is beautiful. I also love the way his preserves Ji Ho’s autonomy.
The cat is a major focus in Se Hee’s life. It’s so adorable. Yes, Se Hee is introverted, but he still is highly aware of other people’s perspectives and feelings.

Romance

“Something that’s not simple just started.”

It’s such a great start to a relationship that Se Hee likes everything about Ji Ho. He’s not looking down on her for those usual reasons of messiness, clumsiness, chattiness, etc. He’s not annoyed by her at all.

“If you have some time, would you marry me?”

“I noticed you washed the instant noodle bowl.”
“Yes, it’s a habit.”
“You have a really good habit.”

These two are an amazing couple. They are so normal. I love the way the pair meet through a series of texts and notes. I was concerned about what would happen when the truth came out, but they both dealt with it maturely without the ridiculous high drama that I predicted would ensue.
I appreciated the approach that they first found themselves to be so compatible and the relationship developed from there instead of this opposites attract sort of premise that is so rampant.
They have a great positivity in their relationship. Se Hee is so polite to Ji Ho.

Se Hee’s way of falling in love is too cute. He is such a reserved character, but the drama shows all the little ways that he is falling in love. Actually, when he talks to other people about Ji Ho, you can really see how much he cares about her and how much he notices about her.

I love the way they start really looking at each other. For me, that was the sweetest moment when they’d bump into each other somewhere, do an awkward bow and just look at each other as if they’re savouring the happiness and looking at their love’s face.

I thought the ending would go the standard route of miscommunication and missed opportunities. But the drama does well to surprise us with what each character actually knows.

While normally I wouldn’t encourage emotional whiplash from either gender, I feel a bit satisfied seeing the heroine get to play the strategic hero when it comes to romance while the hero flops around helplessly. It’s a bit of a different angle too, that throughout the show the hero is flawlessly considerate and he needs to pull out some selfish sentences so the heroine understands he actually has feelings.

Work

“We are not family. Let’s get paid properly.” I love this slogan haha.
The drama portrays different work environments from Ho Rang’s restaurant to Soo Ji’s corporate world.

Family
Ji Ho’s mother is really a great dynamic to the show. I enjoyed her unpredictable interactions with people and she has a most meaningful conversation with Se Hee. Considering her relationship with her husband, it was wonderful to hear Se Hee’s point of view of how he won’t be lording over his wife.

Ji Ho’s sister in law is quite nice. I was glad she was also normal, wanting to be on good terms with Ji Ho.

Friends

Ji Ho’s friends are great. They are both actresses that I’m familiar with from shows that made a big impact on me. They are multi-dimensional women. I always feel so happy to see a cheery slightly ditzy character in a managerial position.

Ho Rang
She’s a pretty average girl. Who knew a sofa could be the cause of so much drama and miscommunication.

Soo Ji
I first saw Esom in White Christmas where obviously she seemed so small next to all the male models that starred in that show. She is an amazing character in this show with so many hidden layers. She’s snarky, but also motherly. She has an active sex life but doesn’t flaunt it and yet continually gets discriminated and harassed at work for her gender. The drama demonstrates this so strongly but not in an in your face harsh manner. I liked seeing Soo Ji still living life despite being so submissive at work. I wasn’t sure if I would like her love line but really Mr. Ma is so cute with her. I agree with his assessment of her.

“You look like a baby when you smile. But you look scary in general.”

Mr. Ma
“I’m a bit scared to be scolded by you twice in one day. Gosh, Soo Ji is the scariest in the world!”

Mr. Ma has a unique way of using his voice in different scenarios that makes his character really come alive.

FILTER : A PERFECT BLEND OF FUN AND DEPTH!

Filter is a humorous yet profound drama that tells the story of a woman grappling with insecurities about her appearance. When she unexpectedly encounters her high school first love, their reunion leaves her feeling disheartened after he makes an offhand comment about her looks. Feeling dejected, she crosses paths with an elderly woman who gifts her a mysterious bracelet. This bracelet turns out to be a filter that allows her to alter her appearance, shapeshift into different forms, and enhance her beauty, much like a beautification app.

As she navigates her newfound abilities, she becomes re-involved with her crush, who is drawn to one of her personas. I won’t delve deeper to avoid spoilers, but this overview captures the essence of the story. Filter excels at tackling sensitive topics such as body image, self-discovery, and self-love. It feels both original and refreshing, striking a perfect balance between depth and humor. The comedy is skillfully executed and feels natural rather than forced, making it genuinely enjoyable.

The characters are vibrant and fully embrace the chaos of their situations, leading to plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. Yet, amidst the comedy, Filter maintains an emotional core that resonates deeply, ensuring that viewers experience a rich blend of laughter and reflection

The pacing is excellent, with events unfolding in a way that feels neither dragged out nor slow. As I mentioned earlier, the characters are intriguing, and it's refreshing to find that most of them are genuinely likable. Their impeccable comic timing significantly enhances the humor throughout the series, making the comedic moments all the more enjoyable.

The female lead, played by Landi Li, is a joy to watch. Despite her initial insecurities about her appearance, she exudes a vibrant and energetic personality that is truly endearing. Her ability to stand up for herself, combined with her humor, adds depth to her character. She’s wonderfully flawed and imperfect, which only enriches the narrative.

On the other hand, the male lead, portrayed by Tian Jianci, may initially come off as a jerk, but there’s a deeper explanation for his behavior. He is a quirky, nerdy, and fun-loving character who makes unreasonable assessments and decisions, which makes him relatable and human—quite a departure from the flawless male leads we often see. His refreshing personality adds a unique charm to the story.

SCC and Tang Qi are perfect examples of characters who embody the beauty of imperfection. I appreciate narratives that present characters in shades of grey rather than stark black and white, allowing for a deeper understanding of their humanity. These are characters whose actions resonate with me, as they make mistakes and grow from them, making it easier to empathize and put myself in their shoes.

SCC ( The female lead ) is a girl who has long struggled with insecurities about her appearance, even facing indirect mockery from her crush during a reunion. Just when she feels at her lowest, she receives a magical bracelet that grants her newfound power. Initially, she uses this power for her own benefit, but as her journey unfolds, she begins to use it to help others, showcasing her growth and evolving perspective. On the other hand, Tang Qi starts off as a misunderstood jerk, but as the story progresses, we see deeper layers to his character. He candidly reflects on his feelings for different people, revealing that he has never considered himself the type to fall in love easily. Both characters are victims of their circumstances, acting out of emotion and the situations they find themselves in.

Their growth stems from the mistakes they make and the unreasonable decisions they encounter along the way. This complexity makes them relatable and human, enriching the narrative with depth and authenticity. Their journey is a testament to the fact that growth often arises from our struggles and missteps, making their story all the more compelling.
Even the side characters are well-developed and interesting. The female lead's best friend is naive yet cute, funny, and loyal, while her sister, with her cold exterior, shows a caring side. The male lead's coworker and best friend brings an unintentional humor and maturity that further enriches the ensemble. All these characters contribute to the series' charm.

Now, let's delve into the growth and development of the leads' relationship. As I mentioned earlier, the female lead possesses a unique bracelet that allows her to take on different forms and personalities—yes, even a broom or an alpaca! Throughout the series, we see these various personas interact with the male lead, who finds himself falling for each of them. He literally embraces the "will you love me if I turned into..." concept, showing that his attraction stems from the charm of the female lead, regardless of her form.

Their relationship starts off on rocky ground, rooted in their shared history from high school. The female lead had a crush on him and made efforts to connect, but he misinterpreted her proactive attempts as bullying. This misunderstanding created very different perspectives of each other. When they meet again years later, another layer of misunderstanding emerges. She views him as a superficial jerk who only values appearances, while he sees her as the same girl who bullied him and is now lazy at work since they both work in the same office.

This initial misconception lays the groundwork for their gradual journey of getting to know one another. The development of their relationship is beautifully illustrated not only through his interactions with her various filtered personas but also through their genuine connection as individuals. This dynamic allows both characters to peel back the layers and discover who they truly are, ultimately deepening their bond.

Watching him fall for her in various forms, only to face the heart-wrenching reality of losing her and having to say goodbye, creates a powerful emotional impact. Tian Jianci excels in portraying this complexity, capturing the nuances of love and loss with remarkable skill. His performance brings a raw authenticity to the story, making the audience truly feel the weight of their connection. This bittersweet dynamic kept me engaged and Ofcourse they do this while still keeping the Serie overall experience lighter heartened.

The romance between the leads unfolds at just the right moment, neither too late nor too soon, creating a perfect timing that feels organic to the story. In this drama, their romantic connection develops later in the series, allowing viewers to witness the male lead's attraction to various versions of Scc, unaware that they are all her. Despite the different personas, he is drawn to her character and charm, which adds depth to his feelings.

As the story progresses, we see him gradually dispel his misconceptions about her, and the same goes for Scc. The buildup of their relationship is handled with a gentle and delicate touch, making it all the more impactful. Once he realizes that Scc is the one behind all those different identities, he begins to associate his feelings with her true self, which creates a beautiful moment of clarity for both characters. They work through their misunderstandings and miscommunications, starting their relationship on a clean slate.

Their chemistry shines brighter than ever as they engage in cute interactions that highlight how well their personalities complement each other. The romance evolves into a cute yet mature relationship, and I love how they emphasize that this is a first for both of them. During their first kiss, he admits it's his first, and the palpable awkwardness and fear of making mistakes make the scene all the more relatable. They manage to pull off the most adorable yet awkward kiss, perfectly capturing the essence of their budding romance. So yes, while the romance happens later in the series, it is beautifully crafted and completely earned.

The second lead couple is equally charming, bringing their own unique storyline that runs parallel to the main plot. While they don't directly impact the leads, their dynamic is so endearing that it adds another layer to the series. We affectionately refer to them as the "lucky and unlucky CP," where she seems to bring him good luck through their interactions, while he inadvertently brings her bad luck. It’s a fun twist that makes their relationship a cute addition to the overall narrative.

The acting in this drama is absolutely phenomenal. Tan Jianci deserves an award for his incredible performance. He navigates a wide range of emotions with such finesse, effortlessly shifting from laughter to tears, and showcasing moments of silliness and cuteness, as well as intense rage and anger. His ability to embody these diverse feelings is nothing short of brilliant.

Li Landi is equally impressive, delivering a performance that feels completely natural. She has a remarkable talent for acting without appearing to try too hard, which enhances her authenticity on screen. Together, their performances elevate the drama, making it a standout in the acting department.

I started The Good Wife to alleviate the painful wait for the new episodes of Doctors (oh, the irony). And 2 episodes in, I was absolutely engaged! The Good Wife is not a typical drama. It has a mature tone and deals with mature issues. When a normal Korean drama deals with cheating on your spouse, they make it all cheesy and overly dramatic. I just love how they handled the cheating in this drama. It was so realistic and you completely understood where each character came from.

The female lead was amazing. She was so calm and dignified and yet, there is a subtle change occurring within her throughout, simmering beneath the diplomatic surface. It never explodes or exposes itself completely. You cannot hold that change to one single moment. You can't point at one moment and say "there she is finally!" But you can feel the change constantly, scene after scene. Until it has become a part of her completely.

I love her character. It is so deep and yet we can all relate to it somewhere. The rest of the cast is equally amazing. Nana's character was brilliant. She was so unique in her style and I loved her screen-time, especially with Hye Kyung. I didn't know much about Nana before I started this show (except that she wins the title of "most beautiful face" a lot). But I really look forward to seeing her in more roles (and different ones). I didn't know much about Jun Do Yeon either (except that she was paid A LOT for this drama). But I she was so good here, I ended up checking out a couple of her movies (and loving them!).

The guys were awesome. Jung Won was sooo sexayyy. Like MY GOD. He's like a bad boy who grew up like some really fine wine. I'll be crushing on him for a while. The romance was unexpectedly awesome. The drama is full of sexual tension and I am not complaining.

Tae Joon was another complex character who was a delight to watch. The whole time you are wondering WHO THE HELL IS HE? WHAT IS HE THINKING? This guy had me really confused with his sometimes-bad-sometimes-good character. But then I realized the catch. This is how he is supposed to be. This is how we all are. There is no black or white. There are good sides to us and there are dark sides. And that is exactly how he was. He was a scary man but he was a gentle father. He was trying to do something right using wrong methods. He loved his wife but he succumbed to temptation. A lot. He was human.

The music was perfect for the drama and this drama can definitely be watched again for the complexities and the surprisingly swoon-worthy romance that takes it's own sweet time to build.

An extraordinary mixture - a fresh, fast-paced breeze, yet profound and multidimensional

"Military Prosecutor Doberman" brings a fresh, fast-paced breeze into the swamp of army power tussle and its entanglements with politics and business. The power tussle in this context is not new per se. But here it is convincing in proven, sophisticated, high-quality KDrama style. The story is critically focusing on the ruthless games of the mighty with honest ordinary people. By the way it is also shaking the noble, idealized concept of family -just a bit in passing by. Yet above all "Military Prosecutor Doberman" is impressively processing, disenchanting and denouncing the often (even without actual front war!) psychologically cruel everyday army life.

As I mentioned before, the pace is quite high. There is cool talk and hip people. You´ll get action scenes as well. The soundtrack underlines the story pace with unusual hard beats and metallic sounds. But: nevertheless the KDrama wants to be emotionally profound and multidimensional. In case you consider that an imcompatible mixture, you're wrong. Here it works. And it's excitingly thrilling too.

"Military Prosecutor Doberman" creates an extraordinary blending. There is also a hint of romantic vibes. Just enough to round out the hard edges.

"Our Youth" - Minase Jin

I honestly have no words. I wish I could do a cool one-liner that puts all my feelings into one, but honestly, I don't know. All I can say is "wow." This is like trying a food and knowing it'll be your favorite from the first bite. That's how I felt when I watched the first 2 episodes. I remember telling my friend, who is now watching, that I had just started this but I knew it'd be in my top 5 jbls. This is just THAT show. I lowkey haven't written a review since "The Trainee" ended (September) but I just have to for these cuties!!

In a tiny sum up, the story: Minase Jin is what a parent would call "perfect," with good grades, stays out of trouble, and overall just well-behaved, that is until Hirukawa Haruki steps into his life. This entry led him to find out a pretty personal secret about Hirukawa, which brings them closer, maybe a bit too close.

What did I like? Wow, there's a lot. Shall we make a list?

1. Characters: Honestly just both of their stories alone are great, especially Hirukawas, and them coming together makes a pretty good mix.
2. Chemistry? Well it's definitely there!! I don't care about what others say, there was TENSION.
3. I read other reviews, and with the cinematography portrayed, I felt extremely immersed.
4. As well from a review, the mention of waves and boats. A quote I have from the 10th episode is said from Minase Jin. "And I let the boat carrying the letter go into the sea out of my hands as the wind takes it. That letter sails into the deep sea. " Honestly, I just love the comparison.
5. The loyalty of the two..oh my gosh?? "Even if we can't get married, I will always be by your side." Haruki Hirukawa, can you be MY husband??
Honestly, to name everything I love, I'd have to go back and watch every episode and write down each and every one of my thoughts. But Our Youth has brought out a feeling in me that I didn't think many could reach.

In the later episodes I also realised they called each other by Jin and Haruki, when in the earlier episodes they called each other Minase and Hirukawa, which I found cute. The fact they do that from when their teenagers to adults? I love them. As well as how the "novel" of the letter was Our Youth. That means what we just watched was the letter, right?

Anyways!!!

The only con for me is the special episode. The fact they didn't ACTUALLY tell them they were dating made me sad, but that's okay!! Same with the marriage. Maybe someday we'll get another special episode of their marriage when it becomes legal in Japan. But for now, we can only hope!

To wrap this up, I honestly really wish I didn't have to. I'm gonna miss dreading every time I had to wait for the next episode. When I first started watching, it had 5 episodes out, and I caught up all in one. I started at 10pm (mind you, I have school) and watched every episode to catch up. Then when I found out the 5th had came out that day, I was quite sad to have to wait. But, now I can just rewatch when I'm feeling down. Anyways, I'm really going to miss these two. I know some may disagree, but I loved these two a lot. Would definitely recommend!!

As an American, I watch way more Asian dramas than I do anything else. I find I enjoy even the worst ones more than I do most American shows. Every so often, a drama like Healer comes along and just does everything to perfection, reminding me why I started down this road to begin with.

Healer has everything - a perfect OST, an epic OTP, an amazing cast, and a script that keeps you invested from start to finish. I found myself falling more and more in love with this show after each episode. The battle between good and bad/ right and wrong just grabs you and makes you want to root for the guys fighting to make sure truth prevails.

The acting is top notch. It's adorable, sincere, cool - everything you need to fully invest in the story. The music is beautiful. The synopsis really doesn't do this story justice. You might think that watching a story about reporters would be extremely boring, but Healer is anything but. It's a great mix of action, romance, and mystery. If you only watch one kdrama this year, it should be this one.

Epic Romance and Outstanding OST

Don't be deceived by the negative comments and reviews from these haters. Their complaints stem solely from the fact that the plot didn't align with their desired expectations. If the storyline were too predictable, it would result in a dull and unengaging experience.

1500 years of yearning, yet love's embers still glow. That's the spellbinding essence of this drama, where a man's devotion to his lost lover transcends time itself. It's a testament to pure love, beautiful in its rawness and heart-wrenching in its longing. Tears welled in my eyes more than once, especially during Han Ri Ta's hauntingly poignant flashbacks.

It's easily one of the best this year, every note is a whisper of the characters' unspoken desires.

When it was great, it was great. When it was bad, it was reallllly bad.

How to start this?

Was I disappointed? Yes.

To be fair, the crazy amount of teasing and build-up kind of set my expectations ridiculously high.

This drama is a mess. It starts out fucking epic. I got Night Manager vibes, which was a great sign. Then, I think after episode 7, it started to lose itself. There were still some great scenes with good dialogue, interesting symbolism, cool fight scenes, amazing cinematography, and fantastic acting. But they weren't the majority.

Obvious Problems:
#1. Let's be honest here: the third couple was unnecessary. Screentime devoted to them could have been put to better use.
#2. Unnecessary connections. Not every character needs a thread from their past connecting them to everyone!
#3. Once the main couple got together, they both got really stupid, fast. Lol.

Other Problems:
#1. While this was more comedic than serious, the comedy was still a bit much at times.
#2. The story should have been more focused on the mafia aspect. Sometimes, it felt like a side story.
#3. The finale seemed to throw everything at the wall. Will I get over the shorts? No, I will not!

Saving Graces:
#1. Vegas. Vegas, Vegas, Vegas. He ate up every scene. The visceralness of him was on another level. He made me conflicted, which is what some of the best characters do. One moment, he was clearly the bad guy; the next, he was a shivering puppy, and then he was a mix of everything. Bible . . . Just . . . Wow.
#2. Pete. God, the emotions he made me feel. He deserved so much more screen time.
#3. Vegas and Pete. They made me want to skip scenes with Kinn and Porsche. THEY MADE ME WANT TO SKIP SCENES WITH KINN AND PORSCHE! Also, they made me write a poem.
#4. Tankhun. Iconic! He is THE moment!

I love contract relationship dramas, but this one infuriated me

**SPOILER HEAVY**
I've been lurking on MDL for the longest time but I HAD to make an account to post a review - that's how upset I am with the drama. I'm fluent in Chinese so I've watched the entire series without subs.
Don't get me wrong, the actors are great and it's of no fault of theirs that the writers decided to mess with the characters. But I really wonder what went through the writers' minds when they wrote this.
First off, the ML is downright creepy. He watched the FL go on with her daily life for months? years? as she went about with her life as an adult. Thankfully, he didn't stalk her after she moved away from the house he saw her in.
He’s fixated on her cos hemet her when he a kid at the orphanage and fell in love with her as she's a ball of sunshine. He also says creepy things like ‘it doesn’t matter who she wants to find, cos I found her first.’ (there was another boy at the orphanage that she remembered)
AND!
After the FL's twin sister started working in the ML's company (he's the CEO btw), he did a background check on the FL, so he knew exactly who she was and what she was doing.
When the FL's twin sister got into an accident and the FL went to the ML's company to take her place, he instantly knew it and constantly tried to get closer to her. Coincidentally, the FL's twin sister was pretending to be dating the ML before the accident, so the ML took the opportunity to act all lovey dovey with FL, even getting her to move into his house so that she would fall in love with him. He also guilt trips her into spending time with him and basically gaslights her all the time. The show tries to use this as a way of showing how much he loves her, but all I could hear were sirens reminding me that these are huge red flags.
The FL is also really badly written. She's whiny, immature and constantly jumping to (the wrong) conclusions. She never changed from the start to finish so I felt that she had ZERO character progression. It really felt like I was watching an angsty teenager rather than a working adult.
You'll be fine if you turn off your brain and moral compass to watch this, which is what I did. The leads were also super cute together, which helped matters immensely.
Oh, and it has a happy ending, in case that matters!

STORY: Porsche left to work in another city, leaving Emma behind. She meets Night who has had a crush on her since High School. Pick still can't figure out what to do with Rome, but now another guy, Din has started hanging out with Rome which makes Pick jealous.

ACTING/CAST: All great actors, so nice to see many of them come together from different series.

MUSIC: Great music.

REWATCH VALUE: Yeah, just the parts with Rome and Pick.

OVERALL: I am kinda sad to see the warm, sweet charm of Season 1 disappear. They definitely went in a different direction. Porsche is very moody and not as charismatic as before. Adding more cast has added much more tension. It feels like the innocence was lost between seasons.

It was better than I though, but kind of worse, too.

Just finished it, and it was better than what I expected. 8.5 is a little strong, and maybe it does deserve an 8 or even a 7.5, but this drama IS charming and sweet. And it wasn't boring!

Story :
The drama in 3 parts, to me: the bad one, the transition, and the good one.

The bad one: the first few episodes (the first 2 especially). It was too much, unfortunately. I was disappointed in the visual of the heroine, not about the actress, but the way they made her look. Like her bangs or the way she was filmed.
In the movie, they really tried to make us feel that she was creepy, with her heavy bangs always in front of her eyes and her face looking down. Here, I really don't understand what is so scary about her.
They were so focused on making her pretty, that we are supposed to just watch some normal guys be horrified about a... pretty girl with bangs? It's not that complicated to make her hair fall a little more on her face and make the actress keep her head lower. It's kind of the basics of your job. T^T

I know it's only details, but those details kind of ruined the first few episodes for me. Sawako is, in the beginning, a really nice girl, but also creepy, awkward, and doesn't know what to do with her face. Here, she's just a quiet girl, and people's reactions to her feel over the top (of course, it's over the top in the movie/manga, too, but she IS scary in there).


Then we have the transition, which is when she becomes more confident, it's better, because there are no scenes where she's "supposed" to be creepy, so it works. We just follow the story of a quiet pretty girl and her friends.
That's what saved the drama, for me: Kazehaya, Yano, Chizu, Ryu, Pin, and even Kurumi. They walked out of the manga and were really faithful to the source material. The story was nice, too.
This part is better, though some weakness in acting goes in the way of emotional scenes. But I don't really care as it is a high school drama, and I like watching green actors, too.


Then we have the story that continues where the anime stopped. It's where it gets good. Maybe because there were no adaptations of it to compare to, so it was more easygoing. I really enjoyed it from here!

The acting :

When I first heard about Suzuka Ouji playing Kazehaya, I felt like he didn't suit the role at all. The trailer prove me wrong so I wasn't surprised about the really good job he did here!
Nakamura Riho and Sakurai Kaito were really good, too. She feels less experienced as him (weirdly), but the chemistry was working. :)
At first, Kumada Rinka didn't feel as strong as expected for Yano, but it got better and better through the drama.
Miura Shohei was super charming as Pin, Nothing but good things to say.
Suzuki Jin is... Hmm. Kento is a difficult character 'cause he's too much. I think the actor did what he could. It was a very Suzuki-like acting. I know a lot of people like him, it's unfortunately not my case, but maybe one day!
Kanon as Kurumi was okay. She did a good job as an actress, I just didn't feel the charm of the character through her. But she didn't do a bad job, maybe it's just a problem of chemistry because most of her scenes are with Sawako.
Minami Sara as Sawako was.... disappointing. As I said, the styling wasn't on her side, but the acting wasn't amazing either. I didn't expect a lot. The acting in the drama is VERY green, and it's not amazing, but I don't really care for high school shows, usually. Here it did get to me because I just feel that she wants to look pretty. Pretty tears, pretty smile, pretty when she's supposed to be scary, pretty when she's supposed to make a weird face... I don't know if the director wanted it, her company wanted it, or the actress just do that without thinking.

For me, the fault lies with the director, as he should have told her to do more and to let go of her image. It's a shame because I didn't feel that in the other dramas I saw from her, where she plays stronger characters (from the ones I saw).

The music (and directing?) :

Nothing that especially triggered me, but nothing that I care about either.
Same thing about the directing of the show, which is kind of disappointing because the anime did add something that only anime could. I thought the drama would do that, too, but no.

Rewatch value :
Not really. Maybe some episodes here and there.

Here it is for me! Still an enjoyable show if you go through the first part!

A truly enjoyable serie, Kagi no Kakatta Heya is perfect for the Summer. It's episodic, which allows the viewer to watch one episode today and the next in a week without either forgetting the plot or severing any narrative thread. Should you decide to watch it, you can let your heart rest and only use your brain: this is a logic quiz, not a rollercoaster of emotions. The cases revolve around how the crime was committed: Who and Why are almost irrelevant.
It's perfect for a break from emotion-filled dramas, or for a weekly/daily 45 minutes of pure distraction.

As already pointed out by other reviewers, each episode is built upon a fix pattern, with a brief presentation of each locked-room case in which the improbable investigative trio gives us hints to solve the riddle. If you aren't a fan of serial doramas, you may find the repetition boring. Personally, now and then I like the familiarity created by schemes and patterns: it's... reassuring, and relaxing.

The actors do a great job. Sato Koichi's antics are hilarious, Ohno Satoshi's robotic ways surreal but very effective in creating a familiar character and yet leaving that trace of mystery which keeps the interest of the viewer alive. I'm partial to Toda Erika because every time I see her on screen she is different. This time it took me almost half an episode to truly recognize her; I once read that she's one of the few drama actresses, if not the only one, who is ready to act with no make-up at all. Her clothes are so discouraging it's evident she does not want to impress for her looks, but for her acting skills.

The editing of this show is original: it cuts scenes and music abruptly. In the beginning I thought it was a mistake by the segmenters, but I later realized it's a direction choice. While I wouldn't recommend this kind of style for every drama I watch, I think it works well here, where no room is left open for unnecessary detail and economy prevails over flowery narration.

The music is brilliant and works perfectly for the show. It combines some elements of the traditional detective/mystery serie a' la Ellery Queen with the contemporary pace and rhythm.

It can be rewatched, given some time has passed and you've forgotten
the intricacies of how the culprit did what (s)he did. I didn't mind the ending at all, I thought it was very much in line with the rest of the show. Suitable and therefore recommended to any type of viewer of every age.

Sensitive and at the same time ruthless portrayal of child abuse and its traumatizing effect

"Miss Baek" is a KMovie about child abuse. Sensitively, cautiously and at the same time ruthlessly, it portrays the example of two 'victims' - a young girl and a grown up woman (actually also a man). It shows how the system prefers to helplessly look the other way, leaving the children alone in their family hell. It also illustrates how this traumatization affects their future lives, remaining trapped in their frightening dark history, still vividly present for the rest of their lifes.

Han Si-mi has received multiple awards for her performance as Miss Baek. But also Kim Si-a in the role of little Ji-eun is just incredible. And the rest of the cast and production, too. Also thank you for the consistently tranquil, unexcited simplicity as well as a to the point, no-frills narration.

Highly valuable. By the way, the story is based on a true event.




------------------------- SIDE NOTE: --- Child abuse in South Korea ---
The cane in schools has been officially banned in South Korea since 2010. However, thrashing at home is another issue. Among the cases of child abuse confirmed by the police, more than 80 percent can be traced back to the biological parents as the perpetrators. To this, add the dark figure. Accurate statistics on the prevalence and frequency of violence against children are difficult to obtain, since the police, ministries, child protection centres, independent agencies, etc. each compile their own statistics, which are based on estimated numbers.

Many South Korean parents grew up like that themselves ... and still belief that children are the extended selves of the parents, kind of - not individual separate beings. Social focus is not on the rights of the children, but more so on those of the parents. Upbringing is primarily the private affair of parents and not a matter of legal jurisdiction. In this context there is often talk of the "stick of love". In fact, many parents believe that thrashing strengthens their children's character while showing them how much they are loved.

In many European countries this no less than abuse. And fortunately there is a growing awareness of this in South Korea as well. In media representation again and again one encounters scenes of child abuse, e.g. in KDrama and KMovie. It is common. However, fortunately, it starts to be more and more common, too, that this kind of violence is being socially confronted as part of the storytelling... Statstically, the number of cases with serious domestic abuse being investigated by the police is increasing. Including cases in which parents abuse their children to death. This does not imply that child abuse is increasing, rather that more cases are being reported. An encouraging sign. It gives hope that the dominance of traditional (and often abusing) parenting concepts is slowly crumbling.
