Go watch Hidden Love now!!!!

It's a beautiful series, and I think it deserves all the hype. I love how all that ends up, and without a doubt, it is one of the most outstanding cdramas in 2023.

Story:
In this story, a girl named Sang Zhi falls in love with Duan Jia Xu, her brother's best friend. Jia Xu regards Sang Zhi as a sister, yet Sang Zhi has started having feelings for him. As time passed, he developed feelings and fell in love with Sang Zhi.

The various periods of Sang Zhi and Duan Jia Xu are depicted throughout the plot, which is very well developed, from when they first met to when they started dating. It is very light and airy and shows various stages of relationships.

Cast:
Zhao Lu Si (Sang Zhi) and Chen Zhe Yuan (Duan Jia Xu) worked effectively in depicting their personality. They have fantastic chemistry on-screen and off-screen. They are the greenest of green flags, and their relationship is healthy. The series gets better because of the characters' excellent communication and comprehension. ZLS demonstrates how Sang Zhi matures as a character. Victor Ma also did an excellent job of portraying a brother who is a bother to his sister and still cares about her no matter what.

Twenty-five episodes is most certainly insufficient for me, but rather, it's without a doubt the ideal length. I, as of now, need to watch it again as it is beautiful, as it were. I strongly encourage anyone who hasn't seen it to try this drama—it's a warm and beautiful work of art!

Starts good but goes for a free fall in the end

Started good and strong but went straight down hill in the last episode. Till E5 she was just one greedy woman who wanted to earn lots of money but in the last ep they turned her into a cheating woman too who blames and gaslights ML for her sleeping with the ex bf. Instead of talking with her husband for lack of intimacy she cheats on him and then calls him out for not being good enough. ML suffered the entire show for her greed and all he gets in the end is this. The best ending would have been them moving on separately but NO they just get back together like nothing. Ruined the entire show and character for me.

kbl is back!

After some months of not watching kbl shows, I finally got the same feeling as I started watching kbls. Its actualy improving and I hope we can see more of this.

I admit that there are some lapses but I really enjoyed this. Its like a breath of fresh air to have this kind of plot that we only see on mainstream media. I think its good to have this too though some may not like or fond of it but there are really many stories to show and their definition of love. For this we are aware that this kind of story and many more, are existing in this world. And its up to us on how we will dwell it, hoping in the right way.

So much to talk about, but I enjoyed it, liked it and thats it.

Drag drag and drag...

I think the writer of the drama wanted to make a daily soap out of the script but then they faced some production issues and for the sake of just making it they had to squeeze the whole thing into a 20 episode drama, even when they didn't want to.

Let me get to my point straight, I didn't like it. Not like I hate it, but I hust couldn't bring myself to like it. On that note, my review will be short as well, which is more like a rant.

"The King's Affection", originally titled as "연모" (Affection) fictional sageuk drama which is primarily based on the typical gender-bender concept where the female lead disguises herself as a male and the male lead anyways falls in love with a man, just to realize in the end that he had been loving a woman. Well, I don't hate that concept but it's already been outdated and also experimented in historical dramas before. Moreover, given the basic plotline the execution is not up to the par; I mean it could have been a decent price if they had not Incorporated all kind of typical sageuk elements into the script.

Let's get a simple plot. The Crown Prince's Consort gives birth to an identical boy-girl twins but citing it an ominous sign, the King orders the girl child's death, since only the boy can climb up to the throne. The consort however sends the baby far away who somehow ends up in the palace as a maid after a decade. The siblings come across each other and adms the Prince one day is in the girl's disguise to sneak out of the palace, is mistakenly gets killed. At the same time, the girl in the Prince's disguise remains in the palace and to hide the late Princes demise, she continues to grow up as the Crown Prince, upon her mother's advice.

She shuts all the door to her heart in order to become strong but her starts to waver as she meets her childhood first love whom she had met in the palace as a maid and had a beautiful encounter. The person not knowing the king-to-be is actually a girl and in fact his first love, grow fond of her with time. The story is about their journey of love, affection and struggles on their way to togetherness. It also involves the usual period politics, conspiracies, secret revelations, fightings, unusual deaths, etc.

Park Eun Bin plays the girl Dam-i/Yeon Seon who is in the disguise of her late brother, Crown Prince Lee Hwi. Rowoon plays Jung Ji Woon, a great scholar & Royal Inspector General's Son, who is also Dam-i's first love. Nam Yoon Su plays Lee Hyun, Prince's cousin and son of the previous king. Lee Pil Mo plays King Hyejong, Dam-i's father. Yoon Jae Moon plays Left State Councillor Han Ki Je, Prince's Grandfather. These are the major characters who are also known for good acting; Pil Mo and Jae Moon ahjussi infact the veterans. I (have) loved Park Eun Bin's acting and Rowoon has still a lot to do though his performance was up to par. Nam Yoon Su is amazing as a rookie actor. Lee Il Hwa is also there as the Queen Dowager, the Prince's Grandmother. There are in fact many good and familiar actors in playing key characters of the story.

Special mention to 3 actors...Baek Hyun Joo playing Court Lady Kim Sang Gung whose delivery was nice and her firm voice :0; Go Gyu Pil playing Eunuch Hong Bok Dong whose expressions were very funny; and Choi Byung Chan playing Prince's Bodyguard Kim Ga On, ofc for his visuals.

The thing about this drama I loved the most is the childhood love story of Dam-i and Ji Woon. The way they encountered each other and became friends gave off immense romantic vibes. Them spending time in Hanyang and gradually growing fond of each other in just those 2 episodes, really melted my heart. In fact when they met each other after a decade as The Prince and the tutor, their longing hearts trying to find each other made me cry so much. It was difficult seeing the ML struggling with his sexuality but also mesmerizing the way he was falling for the King-to-be not knowing his real identity.

The old Korean poetic verses, philosophy and the characters deciphering those is another thing I loved about the drama. Obviously yes, all the historical Korean dramas have this element but I particularly liked the way the writer in here has accurately used and related to life and their situations.

The problem with the drama is it's plot development, content and the thorough execution. The first 2 introductory episodes are good enough to keep you hooked, in fact the best episodes of the drama though you'll have to cry every now and then. After 2 leaps of 10 years each, when the characters appear in their final stage, it becomes more interesting. The premise is gradually set up by intriguing screenplay methods and the romance between the leads begins with initial tease-party. Simultaneously the politics sector of the drama develops steadily. Despite all that, the drama seems to be lacking a specific destination with which it is supposed to end; it becomes unclear where exactly the drama is heading to.

However, everything goes smooth for a while. Somewhere around the 9th episode, the drama starts to be uninteresting with the beginning of crude romance between the leads, which is very typical and don't spark any good chemistry any longer. Events happening for the romance plot of the drama becomes repetitive and unnecessarily dragged to a great extent. Also, the love triangle of the story doesn't create any firm impression on the viewers; like I don't get why was it even there in thr script? Great waste of Nam Yoon Su's skills, ngl.

Starting from the 2nd half, i.e. the 11th episode, the drama becomes a greatly typical sageukk with the cliché elements like power struggle conspiracies, Ming Envoy visits, corruption among ministers, revenge game among families, etc. Given that the drama has 20 episodes and it already runs out of substances right at the interval, It didn't interest me at all to even finish it and I was forced to watch the rest at 2x speed. They try to send the plot to peak several times by incorporating twists here and there but it was clear, they were trying their best to drag it to make it a 20 episode drama. The script didn't even deseve 16 episodes to being with, forget about 20. Simply, it could have been a decent drama at least, if they had planned for a 12 episode set.

Writer Han Hee Jung seems to have not improved over these years. Among her works, the only thing I liked was "Gunman in Joseon". "Clean with Passion" was a wasted potential too. She was the reason I didn't have high expectations from this but I was hoping she might have bettered than before... well, meh! Given the basic plot, the script is totally exaggerated in the 2nd half and the main problem is with the lenthy writing and many unnecessary plots as well as characters. I wish it were a 12 eps drama.

Director Song Hyun Wook is actually experienced and have produced many good dramas but I guess for the reason that it's his first sageuk (historical) drama, he couldn't prevent the flawed outcome of the drama. Screenplay is average given how it runs out of substance sooner than expected. Cinematography is quite well handled, I should admit. The natural elements as well as architectural aspects were taken care of properly. Screen-editing is also good but the dragged script makes it uninteresting and difficult ti keep up with.

I loved almost all of the OSTs. The composition by Tae Keun is very good and he's been able to produce such beautiful tracks, perfectly fitting to the mood of the drama. My most favourite is "Shadow of You" by SuJu K. R. Y; it's soulful and gladdening. They're my favourite trio in the world of Kdrama OSTs. "One and Only" in heart-wrenching vocals of Lyn is another favourite. Baek Ji Young's high notes in "IF I" are very emotional. An Da Eun's "I Believe" felt like a classical sageukk OST. "Hide and Seek" by VROMANCE is a jolly track TT. "Full of You" by Hae Yoon is a modern romantic song and very likable; it's also covered by Vromance. Loved Rowoon's smooth vocals in "No Goodbye In Love" which also makes me cry so much.

In overal, The King's Affection felt like an exaggerated version of Lovers of the Red Sky. I can't help but compare these 2 because they are produced around the same time period. The former is obviously a lot better than the latter but still the amount of dragging the script to produce more episode is the same. Also, the ratings of both the dramas are hugely influenced by the cast and not the quality, everyone is aware of that.

I still wanna insist that I love the basic plot line but the script is pretty mediocre and around the average. Yes, I am disappointed even though I didn't have very high expectations. The cast was obviously the reason I had anticipations but the flaws of the drama amounts to my disappointments, hence I won't recommend this drama to anyone, even for an one time watch, unless you want to give it a try for the visuals.

Another action packed movie, or should I say another blood bath passed for a story line? Very graphic, as this new trend in K movies seems to be a MUST lately. It's not the blood splashing all over that's bothering me, it's the fact that it reminds me of the HBO Spartacus kind of scenes (meh! no poetry whatsoever, nothing epic, uplifting or cathartic, just a slaughterhouse field trip). 90% of the guys in this movie seem to have grown knives straight from their fingers and whenever they move they stab someone... I never thought I would miss the good ole iron pipe that Korean old school gangsters used. I must admit there was one fighting scene however that made my day. Let's just say it involves a shirtless, slim, muscle packed and tattooed Lee Min Ki and a refrigerator. For the guy he was fighting with...

And since I mentioned the shirtless LMK earlier, I should warn you (or entice you, depending on what you like lol) that the shirt is not the only MIA piece of clothing... try ALL of them! His interview during the press conference made me wonder why would he be so wary of the public opinion. Watch the movie and you'll get it! It's more than your regular bed scenes, so I wouldn't recommend this movie to those that dislike mature explicit content. I had no problem with those scenes, I do however have to say that Lee Tae Im, the only actress in this movie, seems to have been cast purely for this purpose. And it somehow annoyed me. Talk about sexual objectification of women. Not that I have a feminist out of place moment here. It's just that her character is anything but 3D, to say the least. Yeon Soo or an air doll, all the same...

The story is nothing much, rather filled with cliches. It reminded me a little bit of A Bittersweet Life, but you need to be drunk or extremely lenient to put the two movies on the same page.

Park Sung Woong is right on spot, bringing his character to life as perfectly as expected. His reserved, classy, poker faced gang boss Sang Ha shows great chemistry with the loose cannon, enraged, horny and blood thirsty Yi Hwan, the character played by Lee Min Ki. I think that's one of the few things that I enjoyed while watching the movie.

Long story short, For the Emperor doesn't have much of a statement to make. It's your regular action flick, with lots of blood and over the top steamy sex. The story line is very simple and predictable. The characters not too complex, the soundtrack nothing much. Lights and cinematography, few memorable scenes. Rewatch value? Unless you wanna play on repeat the few bed scenes or action ones, I'd say no one would bother revisiting this movie.

Watch if you are a Lee Min Ki or Park Sung Woong fan, if you like violent action movies and you don't care too much about intricate plots.

Don't watch if you dislike mature content, graphic scenes or if you think Lee Min Ki's hairdo resembles a bird nest or next door ajumma's perm.

IF YOU'RE STILL HESITATING I HOPE YOU FIND THE COURAGE TO STAND UP AGAIN

You will end up crying rethinking the problems that you made so huge in your head are not that huge compared to what your loved ones will feel after you decide to give up because of those problems. This story gives a reality check to you about the consequences of selfish decisions which you thought wouldn't affect anyone.
This drama has the perfect runtime which gives the right amount of information required and the story progression does not end up looking rushed or slow. The acting was one of the main reasons behind such perfect execution. The ending made me realize that I need to appreciate my present, even though we may face some obstacles here and there still, is there anyone in this world who hasn't faced any hardship whatsoever?

The same old, same old...

When you think you get something like "To My Shore" - no, you don't. It started interesting but then degraded rapidly. We have the same 2D villain fathers and the brother Ken as in many other shows. While not as over the top like in "Wicked Game", it's still not satisfying at all. There is no sophistication in either the script or the villains. It's all very stereotypical. And of course the finale is quite ridicilous as it's typical with thai shows.

At least the MLs got to play something different and in most parts they succeeded with the acting. Nobody can deny their chemistry. The NC scenes are the same old, so nothing new or interesting there. I guess that is the second time we got a GL side-couple, this time not stupid or silly as in "Love Sea". Also the action scenes were not as amateurish as in many other shows, so that got them on my good side 🤣. Production value was high. The timejumps made the story not easy to comprehend.

It's an "ok" show for me, it's watchable but of course can't come close to "To My Shore" which had a much more refined script and even more tensions between the MLs. As usual the viewer gets an happy end and the end scene may be a hint of a coming show in the same universe or a special. But beware that some scenes might be very disturbing (psychical abuse, selfharm) and mentally unstable people should not watch it.

Even though Her Lovely Heels only had 10 episodes and each episode was 10-15 minutes I was unable to keep from skipping at times in this mini drama.

Seung Yoon's acting was bland. She plays a girl who has fallen in love with a co-worker who doesn't believe in love. I felt bad for Jong Hyeon (He plays her co-worker she falls in love with.) you could see he was trying to make the drama more exciting and more interesting acting wise but it just didn't work out.

Jong Hyeon and Seung Yoon were a very awkward lead couple. During some scenes I couldn't help but cringe. I don't know why it was like that...maybe it was because Seung Yoon had the same type of expression throughout almost the whole drama? I don't know.

Now on to the plot. Hmmmmmm....how can I really put it into words? Well I felt it lacked something. The whole plot was basically about there romance and the only thing which kept the story going was there trust issues with each other. Even till the last episode they still were worried the other person was getting involved with someone else (That's never a good sign in any relationship).

The ending was cute. I will say that.

Do I recommend watching this mini drama?
Not really. I would say there are a lot better mini dramas out there.

I really liked the drama, despite the dramatic plot. It's all about childhood friendships, school years, and growing up.
Cherry suffered a lot while chasing after Jiang Qiao, but despite everything, they still found their way to each other. Ling He perfectly portrayed Jiang Qiao's difficult period in life. His character had his own reasons for doing what he did, and his childhood was challenging, so it's understandable that he didn't want to involve Cherry in all of this. But it was so hard for Cherry during this period, she was completely in the dark.
The ending is beautiful and happy, but it would have been nice to have one more episode to show more happy moments.
I really enjoyed the friendship between the characters, they always stuck together and supported each other!

This C-drama xianxia (i.e. supernatural historical fantasy) is one pretty amazing combination of Romeo & Juliet and Game of Thrones put together. If you're interested in a chinese supernatural fantasy show with a well-crafted story that introduces coherent, well-depicted characters who undergo amazing character development and changes, and if you're interested in shows that take you on one exhilarating roller-coaster ride of emotions and story arcs, this will be the show for you.

STORY (No spoilers)
For the C-novel readers:
To manage expectations, I'd like to take a short section to address those who've read the C-novel on which this drama is based and are thinking of watching this show. Firstly and most importantly, please kindly put aside your preconceptions because while this show does follow the novel, it does it in very broad strokes. Key events and key character actions are retained but the journey/ route to those events and actions can be very different. This might disappoint some of you if you're going into the show thinking that it will be a completely faithful reproduction of the novel. In order to help you enjoy this show, I'd like to encourage you to watch it with an open mind. If it helps, I personally found that by doing so and by following the story the drama itself is trying to tell, the plot-threads and character portrayals all hold together very well and this show becomes a more substantial adaptation and, I'd even venture to say, a more glorious homage to its original source material.

For non-novel readers & newcomers:
This show is more than just a pure xianxia romance. I was pleasantly surprised with how meaty and more substantial this show was, and how multi-faceted it can be. It will surprise you with its twists and turns, and with the evolution of our main characters as it progresses. Love (particularly star-crossed love or ill-fated love) and obsession are key themes but they are not the only ones. Themes of filial piety, integrity, loyalty, ambition, vengeance/ revenge, sacrifice, atonement and redemption are also wonderfully built into this show. This is a dish of many flavours. It's not pure sugar though it may start off on the sweet side. It will surprise you with its turns of fiery spice, bitterness and sweet-and-sour, with a touch of savoury thrown in.

Also, to help you understand a bit of what the show is like so that you're prepared, here's a broad outline:
The first half is full of sweetness and comedy, light-hearted and fluffy with some small build-up of plot threads. The romance development here is eminently ML-focused (he falls in love first and fast) and it runs the gamut of playful to moving as it progresses.

The 2nd half will start to bring together several plot threads introduced in the 1st half and so side characters have more screen-time as the show fleshes their story arcs and motivations. The main couple will also encounter love trials along the line of star-crossed love/ ill-fated love (hence the Romeo & Juliet premise). The trials have sound basis and foundation though, so it's not stupid misunderstandings and noble idiocy type issues. But the trials eventually prove and confirm their love and in the end, they overcome them for a suitable end.

I'd really like to encourage you to watch this show as it is quite amazingly crafted and if you like romance shows with a bit more complexity to it and to have more substance to it, this will suit you very well.


ACTING/ CAST
With over 60 episodes, this show's cast is not small. Screen-time for our characters will fluctuate depending on the plot thread in focus at the time so please don't expect our main characters or main couple to continuously dominate the screen. The show takes some pains to explore and flesh out some of its key side characters too, which is really great because it makes the show less riddled with one-dimensional/ cardboard cut-out characters. Even our 'stock villains' are given realistic internal motivations and drivers, and the 'comic relief' characters surprisingly have a core of values in them too. I personally found myself growing fond of many side characters (e.g. Yuanji Immortal, Moon Immortal, Yan You, Water Immortal and Lian Yuan) which makes this show extra enjoyable/ watchable to me. Love them!

Spotlight on our main leads:
DENG LUN as Xu Feng (aka Phoenix), the Fire Immortal. C-novel readers will probably be a bit surprised at Deng Lun's portrayal and take as our God of War, but I liked this different characterisation of our main male lead in this drama. He's not your perfect male lead, not by any means, but he has a strongly loyal, warm and loving heart. This central and core aspect of his character is wonderfully and consistently portrayed throughout the show and Deng Lun's less imposing physic and his warm voice (I just loved the fact that he voice-dubbed his own character!) makes him a more approachable and less dominating character than his C-novel counterpart.
Acting-wise, I think Deng Lun did well in portraying Xu Feng's emotional and character development. I think he does his character justice and that's good enough for me.

YANG ZI as Jin Mi, our Little Grape and Flower Immortal. I personally think that this is not an easy role for any actress to portray as her character undergoes a lot of ups-and-downs, internal conflicts and changes in this show, but kudos to Yang Zi for being able to make her a naively cheerful Little Grape at the start, and to showcase her evolution as the show progresses. She had me invested in her character and in her character's story and progress throughout the show.

LEO LUO YUNXI as Run Yu, the Night Immortal. Like Jin Mi, his character also undergoes a lot of ups-and-downs, internal conflicts and changes in this show and I have to also hand it to this actor, he rose to the occasion in this drama. As one of the 3 main leads in this show, he certainly has not been overshadowed by his fellow co-stars on the acting-front and some of his key scenes really brought the emotions out through the screen.

I personally think that our 3 main leads were well-balanced on the acting-front. No one consistently overshadowed or out-acted the other, everyone was on more or less equal footing in terms of screen-presence and screen-impact, to me. The well-balanced nature of it made the show good, because there is nothing worse than to have a co-star consistently overshadowing or out-acting you in front of the screen, making the scene imbalanced and making the actor and character being overshadowed to be out of place.


MUSIC
There appears to be 3 theme songs for this show (male and female version of the opening, and the ending theme song), and while they are lovely and beautiful in their own right, and when well-employed in a scene they really elevate the moment, I personally felt that the limitation of songs later on became a bit of liability to the show as, with over 60 episodes, there is going to be inevitable song-fatigue. I personally think that this is one area in the show which could really do with additional work and improvement to make it truly great, but well, it is what it is.


RE-WATCH VALUE
I personally loved the first half of the show to bits and can see myself re-playing a lot of it in future. The second half where the real business end of the show starts picking up steam is compelling and addicting to watch for the first time because of the breathless anticipation of wanting to know what happens next. I am not sure how re-watchable this section will be in future once the suspense and excitement is over but it doesn't make this show any less impressive on its own merits.
EDIT: Since writing this review, I've re-watched almost the entire show twice more so clearly my fears about the watchability of the 2nd half was unfounded. In fact, a lot of the emotional scenes in the 2nd half were some of the best scenes in this show.

A Satire of the Ming Dynasty Society

Watching this drama from a satirical perspective of the society during the Ming Dynasty, when Confucianism was practiced at its utmost height, decorum and protocols were strict, harsh and repressive especially for the women, makes it a very enjoyable watch for me. Seemingly unlikely, we get a couple of very strong female characters in particular a know-it-all Mary Sue who always saves the day. All the characters and their relationships have realistically captured life in that orthodox and conservative society, and that can even be relevant in today’s world.

This story takes a bold look into the Ming dynasty society, its orthodoxy and conservatism, its inequality, protocol, manners, expectations, and consequences, with the hidden criticisms that all these had led to the slow decline of the society and the ending of the dynasty.

Accordingly, the drama draws its inspirations from the great classical “Dream of the Red Chamber” with several of the characters deriving their names in a combination of words from the classic novel. The whole story revolves around the high status, wealthy and powerful Sun (pronounced Soon) family, narrated from the perspective of the youngest son, Sun Yulou (Wang Yizhe) who has a high powered father, a doting mother, three brothers and four sisters, each has a story to tell.

Like in the classical “Dream of the Red Chamber”, this story also hints at “truth becomes fiction when the fiction’s true; real becomes not-real where the unreal’s real” by the use of a puppet show in telling the story. Cleverly constructed, there are hints and cross-references to hidden (and obvious) meanings throughout. Truth and falsity, reality and illusion are constant displays.

Undoubtedly marriages by the order of the parents tend to be the most painful experiences for almost every couple even in a society where filial piety is held as the highest order of all. In the high society, statuses and face are always the forefront consideration of any marriages which are used to advance the careers of family members, usually at the expense of daughters, though some sons don’t fare too well either. The consequences are expected: extra marital affair, adultery, love triangle, elope, rebellion - all brilliantly captured in the story.

Sun Yulou rebels against his stern father and the social barriers of the time. He and Lin Shaochun (Bai Lu) pursue individual freedom, gender equality and to marry the partner of one’s choice. This couple has an initial sense of democracy, a rebellious spirit and courageous pursuit of love. Though well-read with traditional books of morals and ethics, Lin Shaochun toes the line from time to time. She convinces Sun Yulou to pass the Imperial exam so that he could become a government official and ask for her hand in marriage.

This is the first drama for Wang Yizhe as the main male lead. Many viewers don't feel he deserves such a role. For me, I would like to give him a chance without looking at him through tinted lenses. I feel his acting has brilliantly brought out the youthfulness of the character. He can look serious when he needs to, but in front of the family, especially his wife, he's just a big sunny boy that can be silly and Wang Yizhe delivers. Despite this being a main lead, it feels more like a supporting role because of how the character is being written, shot and edited.

Many viewers feel the main couple don't have the chemistry. Though they are both of the same age at 18, Lin Shaochun is more mature compared with Sun Yulou, and he always lets her have the final say. With that, it does feel that Sun Yulou a little brother who depends heavily on Lin Shaochun the big sister. For me, the lacking perhaps lies more on Bai Lu as she seems to be less enthusiastic and doesn’t share the same adoration and affection towards her supposedly husband as he has on her.

My Verdict
Despite some flaws here and there, this is a very enjoyable story with a series of side stories which are very well developed and in fact more interesting than the lead couple’s story. It consists a blend of realism and romance, psychological motivation and fate, and daily life with a grand plot hidden and span across multi side storyline. It can be hilarious at times, yet, bitter and resigned when it comes to the fate of some characters. The first episode is comedic and funny. I thought it's going to be light and laughable, but by episode 8, it becomes heavy and bitter.

This is a satire about misogyny, hypocrisy, class system, conservatism, inequality, all told in a very humorous way. Some parts are so funny that I laugh so hard.

The final narrative about how people make choices that determine their eventual endings: take kindness one ends well, take hatred one loses everything, seems to be a just decoy for the deeper meaning of the overall story – a silent criticism of the paternalistic system of the country.

Great story telling. Don’t miss it!

The Fine Line Between Love And Obssetion

Okay, let me just say, this show was like a rollercoaster of emotions from the very first episode, and I am still processing everything that happened. The characters are wild, the drama is next level, and let’s be honest — I couldn’t stop watching. It’s honestly like an addiction; I didn’t know if I was watching for the romance, the suspense, or just for the pure chaos of it all. Let’s break it down, character by character.


Daon
Daon is probably one of the most complex characters I've ever seen in a KBL. From the very beginning, you feel his vulnerability. He's trying to find his way in a world where he's constantly manipulated by people he cares about. The whole situation with Jaemin, Suhyeon, and Seong Hyeon just traps him in this toxic cycle, and it’s brutal to watch. Yet, the thing that makes Daon such a relatable and well-written character is that he isn’t perfect. He makes mistakes, he’s naive at times, and he falls for people who are clearly bad for him, but you can’t help but root for him.

Daon is caught between two worlds: the manipulation of Jaemin and the toxicity of Suhyeon, with Seong Hyeon being a much-needed anchor in his life. His relationship with Seong Hyeon was the only place where he could find peace, but it was also the place where he had to face his own trauma. Daon didn’t have a clear sense of what he wanted for a while because of all the chaos in his life, but once he started realizing what really mattered to him, he stepped up and fought for himself and for Seong Hyeon.

By the end, Daon chooses to live for himself, and the development is so satisfying. He moves beyond the toxic love Jaemin forced on him, rejects Suhyeon’s obsessive behavior, and starts to heal. He grows so much, and it’s honestly a beautiful moment when he realizes that he deserves better than all the manipulative crap he had to deal with. The final scenes with Seong Hyeon? Absolutely beautiful and heartfelt. It was everything he deserved after all the pain.


Jaemin
Jaemin is insane. No, seriously, I don’t know how anyone can watch his descent into madness and not be slightly terrified. At first, he seems like the perfect, charming person — the guy who has your back and is always there to help. But when you look closer, the truth starts to seep through, and it’s dark. His obsession with Daon is palpable from the very beginning. He manipulates Daon’s life, giving him money, tutoring him, and even going so far as to buy off Daon’s family — all in an attempt to control him. Jaemin doesn’t just want Daon; he needs him to stay under his thumb. It’s disturbing, but so well done as a character arc.

As the show progresses, Jaemin becomes more and more twisted, especially after he starts playing mind games with Daon, making him feel guilty, using his manipulative skills to control Daon’s feelings. He has this whole “I love you so much that I’ll do anything for you” mentality, but what he’s really doing is controlling Daon’s life and trapping him in a cycle of emotional abuse. The scene where Jaemin literally stabs himself to get Daon’s attention? Yeah, that's the point where I knew he was beyond help. He doesn’t care about anyone else’s feelings — he just wants to possess Daon at any cost.

Jaemin’s final breakdown was a mix of regret and rage, and it’s honestly chilling how far he’s willing to go to keep Daon close. The whole “if I can’t have you, no one can” vibe was real. His final moments, when he’s arrested in that wedding suit and laughing like a maniac, were the perfect ending for such a manipulative, obsessive character. You almost pity him for how broken he is, but then you remember everything he did, and it’s impossible to sympathize with him. He’s a master manipulator, and it was satisfying to see him lose everything in the end.


Suhyeon
Suhyeon is a more interesting character than I expected him to be. He's just as messed up as Jaemin, just in a different way. Suhyeon is emotionally driven, and while he might have had Daon’s best interests at heart at times, he’s also selfish and manipulative. His jealousy and desire to control Daon is just as toxic as Jaemin’s, though his methods are different.

What I found most frustrating about Suhyeon is that he constantly thinks he knows what’s best for Daon, even when it’s clear he doesn’t. He tries to push Daon away from Seong Hyeon, even though the bond between the two is genuine and healthy. His whole mindset is, “I know what you need, so let me take control,” and honestly? That gets old real fast.

However, I have to give Suhyeon some credit for the way he does eventually come around. In the end, he realizes the damage he’s caused and tries to make amends. He helps Daon, even though it’s too little, too late. He knows he can't control Daon’s life anymore and admits that he was wrong. But honestly, by the end, I was just ready for Daon to let him go for good and move on with Seong Hyeon.


Seong Hyeon
Seong Hyeon is everything. He’s the literal light in Daon’s life and the one person who never pushed Daon into anything he wasn’t ready for. He’s patient, kind, and so emotionally intelligent, it’s crazy. The fact that Seong Hyeon sees Daon’s pain and doesn’t force him to make decisions before he’s ready is one of the most mature and respectful things we see in the whole show. He’s the rock Daon needed to survive all the drama surrounding him.

What I love about Seong Hyeon is that he’s not perfect. He makes mistakes, he gets jealous, and he misjudges things at times (like the whole hickey situation), but his growth throughout the series is real. He learns to communicate, to trust Daon, and to support him through the trauma. His willingness to wait for Daon and understand that it’s not an easy path is really what makes him so lovable.

The relationship between Seong Hyeon and Daon is a beautiful evolution. They go from being two people with a shared history to two people who genuinely love and care for each other. It’s not rushed, and it’s not forced; it’s gradual, like two souls learning to be together. By the end of the show, Seong Hyeon and Daon have the kind of relationship that you can’t help but root for — two people who can truly heal and grow together.


Daon’s sister was honestly one of the highlights for me, and I can’t believe how underappreciated she is. She’s the only one in the show with any sense at all. Her role is crucial in calling out the emotional manipulation from Jaemin and Suhyeon. She’s the first one who saw through all the nonsense and even pushed Daon to stop feeling guilty for choosing his own happiness. It’s not easy being in Daon’s shoes, and she’s there for him without any strings attached. Her advice and care are a steadying force, and I loved the moments when she had to step in and remind Daon that he deserved to make choices that were right for him.

Cinematography and Visuals
The cinematography in this show deserves a standing ovation. From the very first scene, you can tell that this isn’t just your average KBL. The color palette is gorgeous, with muted tones that perfectly match the somber and emotional tone of the drama. There’s a lot of focus on shadows and contrasts, which really adds to the intensity of the emotional moments.

The lighting is so effective in setting the mood. The dark, moody lighting during the more tense scenes, like when Jaemin goes full psycho or when Daon is struggling, creates a sense of unease and anticipation. On the flip side, when Daon and Seong Hyeon are together, the lighting softens, and the colors brighten up, reflecting the warmth and comfort they bring to each other. The stark contrast between the cold, harsh lighting in the scenes with Jaemin and the cozy, intimate moments between Daon and Seong Hyeon really highlights the emotional differences between these relationships.

The camera work also deserves praise. The close-ups on Daon’s face when he’s torn between his emotions, or the lingering shots on his expressions when he’s confronted with Jaemin’s madness, really let you feel everything he’s going through. The slow transitions between scenes and the occasional flashbacks help convey the passage of time and show the depth of Daon’s internal struggle.

The entire cast did an incredible job. Each of them brought their character to life—whether it was Jaemin’s chilling manipulation, Suhyeon’s obsession, Daon’s struggle, or Puppy’s warmth. Their performances made every moment hit even harder. The four of them were not in the same room for many scenes but the chemistry was just there!


Let’s talk about the kisses. These weren’t just any KBL kisses. The chemistry, the passion, and the emotional depth were all there. The kisses between Daon and Seong Hyeon were genuine, tender, and full of love. But there’s also a darker side to this story.
There’s an instance of sexual assault (SA) with Jaemin forcing a kiss on Daon. It's a deeply uncomfortable and disturbing scene that highlights Jaemin’s possessive and toxic love. Daon’s inability to reject Jaemin in that moment shows how trapped he feels, unable to break free due to fear and manipulation.
Similarly, Suhyeon also crosses boundaries with Daon, in a way that feels like another form of manipulation. Daon doesn’t fully reject Suhyeon either, because he’s scared of the consequences and doesn't know how to stand up for himself. These moments are crucial in showing the emotional and psychological struggles Daon faces as he navigates these toxic relationships.

Final Thoughts This show was wild from start to finish. It had so many twists, so much tension, and so much emotional depth. The characters — even the toxic ones — were so well-developed and complex that I couldn’t help but feel invested in each of them. Jaemin was terrifyingly fascinating as a manipulator, Suhyeon was equally toxic in his own way, and Seong Hyeon? Seong Hyeon was the kind of partner Daon needed. He didn’t force Daon to choose between him and the others; he gave him the space to figure it out.

A rich tapestry that frays at the edges.

Set during Tang dynasty, Brocade Odyssey 蜀锦人家 follows Ji Yingying's journey to the top of the Yizhou silk industry as she seeks to clear her father's name and to reclaim her family's reputation as preeminent weavers of the prized Shu brocade. This drama paints a realistic picture of women's roles in feudal society and the intricacies and cut-throat competitiveness of the ancient silk trade. Her path to "having it all" is littered with obstacles, betrayals and setbacks; her triumphs come at great sacrifices; she loses her first love, a few true friends and supporters and for some time, even her freedom.

This is not a light or fluffy romance drama. The main characters are dark and ambitious and some of their overlapping entanglements are messy and complex in a way that won't appal to viewers looking for more straightforward storylines. It is like a rich tapestry that frays at the edges in its over ambitious exploration of too many complicated themes. It is obvious from the start that both Yingying and Zhao Xiuyuan had ambitions that had the potential to get in the way of their relationship. While I didn't agree with Xiyuan's choice, I understood why he did it and I felt quite sad for him. While the digital face swap was surprisingly well done, I think Zhang Haowei would have better conveyed this role. What I didn't like was how when cornered, Yingying makes the exact same decision yet she had no insight from it and her attitude towards Xiyuan continued to be hard and unforgiving even though she had no real moral high ground. She just got super lucky with Yang Jinglan.

The cast is strong, and most of them are able to dub themselves and deliver commendable performances all around. It is difficult to find fault with Tan Songyun's empathetic portrayal of Ji Yingying's ambition, familial obligations and emotional conflicts. However, between her tomboyish girl-next-door look and simply dreadful styling, she does not convey the allure that draws multiple suitors, making the romantic subplots unconvincing. Zheng Yecheng really brings an exciting dynamic to the drama with his physicality and charisma. It is so rare to get such an excellent actor who is also properly trained in martial arts. The production took full advantage of this with many long, exciting, fast moving, muscular and flinch-inducing action sequences. It is a huge upgrade from all quick cuts the slo-mo posing and spinning that we normally have to make do with. I enjoyed their chemistry as a couple and how their relationship evolves organically from that of an alliance into a couple that complements each other in so many ways. Yet I wouldn't say that this is a CP that made a lasting impression on me.

Despite a solid start, this is yet another entertaining Chinese drama that self destructs in the completely unnecessary final Nanzhao arc. It was clearly meant to give Jing Chao, who is a fantastic actor, his own arc. Unfortunately, it is too late in the narrative to force the audience to reinvest in a whole new set of characters and political dynamics. I would also have preferred to see Cheng Fengze remain as a good frenemy, a business rival who valued Yingying for her talent and business acumen alone rather than turning him into yet another delusional suitor. Many of the conflicts that arise in this arc feel forced and all three main characters end up doing stupid things that are out of character. It took me twice as long to watch the final ten episodes as it did to watch the first thirty. There were also a few undeserved death that really made me want to flip tables. Even the terrific end fight scene could not make up for my dismay.

Overall, this is not a bad watch for the fight scenes alone and it is much better if you stop at about ep 30. It is thematically rich and explores female empowerment and the ties that bind in a complex and realistic way. I can rate the first 30 episodes an 8.0 but unfortunately the final 10 episodes are barely worth a 6.0 so my overall rating is 7.5/10.0.

A tender journey of love, growth, and the beautiful chaos of Yumi's life

~Disclaimer: You can definitely watch this season as a standalone drama without watching the previous seasons. But keep it in mind, Yumi's Cells is a tale of the growth and development of a person navigating the ups and downs of her life. So you might not understand how her cells process without knowing her previous situations.

Yumi's Cells is my love-at-first sight comfort drama. It pulled me in from the beginning and kept me intrigued till the end. Yumi's journey that started 5 years ago in 2021, has come to an end. It made me happy for her little triumphs of life, got me sad to see her broken-hearted and enraged me to see her being mistreated by people. In conclusion, she became a part of me as I saw a reflection of myself in her. 

•I loved this storyline because it is genuinely a good drama that truly felt like a romcom evoking butterflies during the scenes between Yumi and her love interests. It maintained its unique sense of empathy and excitement even after several years, with realistic emotional lines and a cheerful tone that resonated well on a personal level. The third season basically focused on the cute, introverted love story between Yumi and her editor Sunrok. It explored the themes of self-discovery, emotional vulnerability, and the bittersweet nature of the relationship in between them. It perfectly balanced the lighthearted comedic moments with sincere reflections on love and life, making it feel authentic and heartfelt. FYI, it got me giggling like a fool!

•Sunrok’s development throughout the story is particularly noteworthy. Initially, he seemed like a robot character; cold, detached, and emotionally shut down. But when he got in touch with Yumi, his internal and external conflicts became evident. His true nature and reactions felt authentic and nuanced, avoiding clichés and adding layers to Yumi's storyline. He was truly an introvert waiting to be discovered. His core value improved gradually, eventually. Sunrok's well-crafted character's complexity and emotional depth added softness to his outer rigid persona. Oh! Did I mention, he got that cute flower boy with puppy eyes image? Well...he's filled with mystic, unpredictable, odd charms. No one can guess how he'll swept them off their feets like Superman! Truly a wild card in Yumi's life.

•Cells played a huge role in establishing the inner engineering of the characters to show how they navigate in their daily life. When situations felt light outside, Yumi and Sunrok's inner world was in full chaos trying to figure out what they wanted and what they needed to do. It showed how considerable both can be even if they didn't want to. The animation and visual storytelling remained strong, with creative depictions of Yumi and Sunrok's internal world that enhanced their storyline. The direction carefully balanced the pacing of the storyline, allowing viewers to savour both the comedic and emotional moments without feeling rushed.

Yumi and Sunrok's relationship sounds, looks and screams a healthy relationship. Their heart-fluttering interactions were to die for! Even though they're 10 years apart, their genuine affection and respect for each other make it impossible to like anyone else. Their slow-burn chemistry bloomed and gave us an ideal kdrama couple we didn't ask for. 

Apart from the storyline, I loved the beautiful cinematography and lovely OSTs, which added a sweet essence to their awkward moments. The only problem I had with this drama was how short it was. Previous two seasons got 16 eps each and Yumi's endgame got only 8 episodes, was literally diabolical!

Overall, I highly recommend this and trust me, you won't be disappointed!
I'll keep my tradition alive as S1 got 10/10 , S2 9.5/10 and S3 doesn't deserve anything below 10 because it made a mundane life feel so special!

NO SPOILER - Is it physical attraction or is it real love connection?

Watching this drama I wondered if sexual tension could ignate real love connections ?

The story : Amidst chaotic political struggle of 3 cities, the most beautiful woman of the desert, gets involved with 3 Influencial men.

Well... This drama is not a slowburn romance like I thought. It is more a story about infatuation with a sprinkle of toxic romance in an unstable desert, where a power struggle is happening.
The main characters begin their journey with sexual tension that develop into something else, as the drama progresses. Intimacy is a big topic of the plot. There is a lot of sexual harrassment as well. Especially in the first half of the drama.
Indeed, in this savage desert, the women's sexuality is a bargaining ship. It can be exchanged as a payment or as a reward for victory. Meanwhile, the rapists are glamorized. So I would say that sex is emphasized more than romance in this drama, at least in the first half.
This is why the dare, here, is to transend the physical attraction into real romantic love while fighting the power stuggles in the desert.

Would this be doable? Indeed, it is, if we take psychology in account.
The "shaking bridge effect" is a psychological effect that can fake attractivness.
Because, a dangerous situation can make people mistake their own physiological sensations for love.
So, being in a life or death situation can arouse them and lead them to desire each other.
ML and FL entanglement is believable and very well enacted in my opinion.


Pros :
- FL is a witty and gifted princess.
- ML is a mysterious city lord/ chief BOA (intelligence service) of the desert.
- Chemistry is good between all the couples. Some MLs know how to bed FLs.
- Acting is wonderful. my favs are FL, Hankiz Omar, who is doing a great job as a cold and proud princess, and Alen Fang who is great as a resourceful chief of spies.
- Great cinematography. The setting is gorgeous. The desert scene were filmed in Gobi desert. It is a feast for the eyes.
- The pacing is quick in the beginning.
- Some scenes are very theatrical. Sometimes it was like watching "Ottelo", "Carmen" other times "Romeo and juliet" or "The phantom of the opera".

Cons:
- The exposition scenes last a lot before the real plot starts.
- Rape culture. Some would say that it takes place in ancient times and they will excuse the multiple men who want to constantly rape the female leads. But I don't agree. This is just annoying to me because it is so repetitive.
- The physical attraction from the start could jeopardize the deep romance. Was it believable? Yes it was and the acting was on point.
- SML and SFL are not complex characters. They are basically like desert Bonnie and Clyde.
- Pacing was a little slow at the beginning but improved after 5 episodes.

Overall:
I was captivated by this drama. This barbaric desert is the worst place to be, especially for a woman like Bei Shuang.
But she is so clever, that she still managed to pursue her goals and it was a bliss to watch her use her wits to outmatch every antagonist.
I had a hard time with the second couple, all their actions was just so annoying or disgusting to me. You'll see what I mean, when you watch the drama. But, I could understand that some people turn like that, in a violent place like this ruthless desert. However, the SFL remains a mystery to me. How can she be a princess and act so wildly and in such a disgusting way. What about the filial piety and the etiquette that every royal should have been tought since childhood? Once again, you will know what I mean as you watch the show. You might went to drop it at some point, because of the second couple but I assure you, this is a great story worth watching.
Even if, at the end I had few doubt about how the antagonists were punished for their misdeeds.
I recommend this drama if you like beautiful epic romance, full of commitments and sacrifices.
Indeed, the fact that it is not a slowburn romance doesn't disturb me. I am a fan of the Lead's love story.
