With every drop of kindness I possess, this was one of the worst shows I ever endured.

I genuinely hated this so much but I'm allergic to dropping mid-show so here I am, finished and seething.

This felt really corny, in so many ways, and I'm saying this as someone who doesn't mind a well written cliché.

The FL was likeable (though, a little flat) but I didn't like the male character whatsoever and found it really hard to be invested in his story/past. I'm sorry but that man was so obnoxious, I couldn't care less about him nor his mama.

The plot was extremely (and I mean extremely) boring to me. Getting through it felt like how I imagine climbing the great wall of China would feel.

The romance felt forced/disingenuous. The (romance?) plot with the 2nd ML was HELLAAAA WEIRDD he was basically her brother, it felt incestuous.

This one is a bit silly but I also hated their outfits lol, they dressed in "2014 business casual." I was really surprised when I saw that this only came out in 2019.

There were also a lot of just STUPID scenarios. Like the fact that one of the main "conflicts" was her being 'soooo embarrassed' of being a fangirl and hiding all her merch, that whole thing felt really goofy.

I consider myself a respectful viewer who likes to keep any harsh criticism to myself, but this was so bad that I genuinely cannot water down my loathing.

They should've stick to the novel

I am definitely going to be biased on this one (again)! I just absolutely love the novel The Sun From Another Star. Seeing Arthit and Daotok fully living in their "boyfriend era" is such a blessing. The show did a great job highlighting Arthit’s gentlemanly yet cocky personality, and, of course, just how completely devoted he is to Daotok.
However, it would have been wonderful to see a bit more of Daotok’s core character. His story is about so much more than just the bracelet or his ability to see ghosts. It would have been a great better if they had included references from the special chapters, like how they hilariously manage to survive Daotok's inedible cooking, or the funny moment when Daotok gets upset because Khun John goes missing.
But then again, the episode is out and it served its purpose. Ultimately, it gave us a sweet sense of closure for Arthit and Daotok’s story with that beautiful marriage proposal.

Minha opinião

Confesso que não é um dos meus favoritos, mas por ter sido meu segundo BL, ele é especial pra mim. A história até que é interessante, mas não conseguiu me prender tanto quanto eu esperava. Em alguns momentos achei o desenvolvimento um pouco parado e senti que algumas coisas poderiam ter sido melhor trabalhadas. A atuação também não foi algo que me agradou muito. Em algumas cenas achei que faltou mais naturalidade e emoção por parte dos atores, o que acabou dificultando um pouco minha conexão com os personagens. Além disso, teve algumas cenas que precisei pular por vergonha alheia, porque certas situações me deixaram muito constrangida. Mesmo assim, não acho que seja uma série ruim. Ela tem seus momentos bons e, apesar das críticas, ainda tenho um carinho especial por ela justamente por ter sido meu segundo BL. No geral, foi uma experiência interessante, mas não é uma série que eu colocaria entre as minhas favoritas.

Things Got Mush-Roomantic

Sold Out on You was a drama that hooked me from the very beginning. I honestly didn’t know what to expect, but I found the whole concept really refreshing. The home shopping/TV sales setting was something I hadn’t really seen before in a K-drama, and I liked how the story slowly introduced the characters and the mushroom business instead of explaining everything at once.

What I enjoyed the most, though, was the relationship between the two leads. Their dynamic was really well written, especially because their relationship doesn’t start in the usual way. He is constantly trying to push her away, while she just keeps showing up and slowly becomes part of his life. Watching him gradually get used to her presence, despite wanting nothing to do with her at first, was honestly one of my favourite parts.

I also really liked his character development. He used to be a happy, talkative person, but after everything that happened with the cream, he became quiet, withdrawn and consumed by guilt. He genuinely believed that he didn’t deserve to be forgiven or loved, which made his behaviour towards her make so much more sense. And when he finally discovers who she is and realizes her connection to the incident, he chooses to hide it from her because he thinks distancing himself is the only way to protect her. Of course, that only makes everything more painful.

The phone-call storyline was one of the most emotional parts for me. The fact that she kept unknowingly calling the number he had ended up with while sleepwalking, and that he listened to all those calls, created such a bittersweet connection between them. And when she finally discovers the recordings and hears him talking about his feelings for her, it was such a good payoff. He was so convinced that he didn’t deserve her forgiveness, while she simply chose to forgive him and told him that they could get through everything together. I really liked that she didn’t try to erase what happened, she just decided that his past didn’t have to define their future.

His relationship with the community and especially with the young girl who was one of the victims also added a lot to his character. The fact that she knew he was connected to what happened to her and still chose to forgive him because she wanted him in her life was incredibly important for his healing. It was also what gave him the courage to start creating creams again.

And I loved that his eventual redemption wasn’t just about him successfully making another product. It was about him finally being able to create something that could actually help the people who had been hurt by the original product. That made the ending feel much more meaningful.

Overall, I thought the story was very well put together. I liked the way the mystery surrounding the original cream was slowly revealed, the way the characters’ pasts connected, and especially the emotional development of the leads. The romance felt earned because we actually got to see them become important to each other rather than just suddenly falling in love.

Sold Out on You was definitely one of those dramas that surprised me. It had an unusual premise, a really well-developed relationship, emotional character arcs and enough mystery to keep me interested. Most importantly, I genuinely cared about these two by the end, and that’s always a good sign for me.

One of the best gmmtv shows of this year so far

I was waiting for this series for so long, ever since we've seen the first trailer i couldn't wait for it to air. And honestly? It was so much better than i thought it would be. The way they actually showed real problems there - depression, OCD, age regression... I'm happy they raised these topics. Probably a lot of viewers felt 'seen' because of it. I also find the plot beautiful, i could even feel the emotions the characters felt through the screen. When you first look at this series, you might think "oh, probably another cute series without plot" but in reality, it's much more than that. I didn't expect this at all either, but after finishing it i feel like it changed something in me. PerthSanta and the whole cast has done an amazing work.

Slow and cozy drama with underdeveloped characters...

this had a really sweet and comforting vibe. I loved the ml's little sister, she was the most interesting lively (yes lively, also lovely but I mean lively) character. Her obsession with that guy was cute I was kinda rooting for them but it's a good thing they didn't end up together, small age gaps are more serious for younger people.

I love the sisterhood between the mother and the aunt!

Lee Jang Woo !!!!!! <3 this character was endearingly annoying and I loved him. I love the actor too.

the leads are both visually very pretty.

The FL tho... *ahem* (skip this part if she means a lot to you) her character was incredibly bland, boring, unseasoned and unflavored. It made no sense for everyone to be in love with her, she didn't have a single personality trait and idk if it's an issue with the writing or the actress but whyy was sheee just standing there for 90% of the time omg like make a face, show an emotion, do something.. the only time she showed some sort of personality was when she cried lol (I'll give the actress credit for that) and the lack of life in her just made it really hard for me to care about her or her story

Initially I had a lot of criticism for the FL only but after some careful thought, I decided that the ML wasn't that impressive of a character either.

shoutout to everyone else tho, the entire cast was great and the rest of the characters are very warm and likeable

It's Lezhin?

Tbh, sometimes, I'm lost in the story setting. Like there are actions that felt no reasons. Or like I'm watching a cut out versions and put together. Maybe it's the directional.
My worst point here only is the freaking background music. It's too much, and become unnecessary. Still continue watching this. We'll see.
(Edit ep 5) it definitely picks up. Now I'm hooked.
(Edit ep 8) it's the peak, not becauss of nc scene, but the storyline. It's like casting a bow. Tugging into the strings before releasing it. Like that feeling. Earlier chapters are much like too slow paced, while it prepare for release. Release of pent up emotions, of all being hold up.
(Edit finish) those last episodes are good.
If I cab compars this. The genre and vibes is like Not Me. But both in different ways. And good ways.

Yearning ML, Irritating Fl.

I really love a pathetic ML <3

• really engaging plot
• amazing actors all across, including the ones playing small roles [I was especially impressed by Ha Chan Ho, played by Ji Hyun Joon]
• lovable ML, shamelessly into the FL, really hot lmao
• unlikeable FL who isn't a very good person, but if you're someone who appreciates flawed female characters then you might love her (Side note: she's not unlikeable in the sense that she's badly written or underdeveloped as a character, she's unlikeable the way a real person would be, and I'm sure the writers intended for her to be like that)

Bittersweet

The mother-daughter relationship was absolutely amazing and probably the best thing about this show. I loved Eun Seong so much, and it was adorable to see how much the girl grew over the course of the show; from her teeth, to her hair, to her little face, she slowly matured bit by bit😭😭. Besides, I loved her feisty personality! The communication between the leads could have been better at times, though I understand that their circumstances weren’t easy. It is also so incredibly hard and annoying sometimes to rely on other people or to ask for help, so I understand why Hye Su decided to do some things on her own. However, I found her too much of a pushover at times, and wish she had stood her ground more often.

The chairman… I don’t know what hole he crept out of, but hell isn’t hot enough for him. What a despicable old man, and a hypocrite too. I know the rich motherfucker, who has a big ass business, house, and a dozen housekeepers, who solves every problem with money … isn’t shaming a sick woman for taking money (that HE offered HER)! Calling her a greedy witch. Between you and her, who’s the bigger capitalist pig, I wonder? He keeps calling both of his sons pathetic losers, but look who ended up all alone? Honestly, he’s the perfect case study for patriarchal structures, and how these affect women. How are you going to cheat on your wife, and then get mad that your pregnant mistress shows up at your doorstep? You keep calling her all sorts of names, even telling her she should just die far away from where you are, but she was still good enough to sleep with when you wanted it. Sure, Ji Hun’s mother is lowkey a homewrecker, but it takes two to tango, and that old fuck acted like he never did anything wrong. He found faults in everyone but himself. Big fat YIKES. Hate his guts. Disgusting man.

Overall, this is an emotional show that has lots of beautiful and even fun moments. I’m glad the ending is open; it’s bittersweet if anything.

Frustrating Finale....

I knew I shouldn’t have expected too much from this series, especially since one YouTube channel already warned me about the ending, but the story itself was really interesting, particularly the flashbacks to when they were younger.

Their age timeline did confuse me a bit. When Chen Hao Wei asked that fugging annoying girl, 'Were you an art major?', it made me think they were in college. Or do Taiwanese high schools offer specialized majors like art? The characters just seemed portrayed way too young to be college students.

Even though the magical realism elements were better than anything from GMMTV, the way they wrapped up the ending was really disappointing. This is the second time in a row I've felt let down like this, watching a great series that completely fumbles the finale.

I have to admit the entire cast acted really well, but they seriously need to give Andy Wu better-written characters. I want to see him more 😭

A Girl at My Door was an ambiguous story that brought up numerous social concerns without really addressing any of them in a satisfactory way. The highlight of the film was the acting by Bae Doo Na and the late Kim Sae Ron.

Lee Young Nam has been transferred from the Police Academy to a small coastal town to serve at the local police department as Chief. She discovers the town is hardly idyllic. The oyster farmers use illegal immigrants as underpaid labor brokered by Park Yong Ha. Park is also the “stepfather” of Sun Do Hee whom he beats every time he drinks which is daily. His mother is also an alcoholic who berates and beats Do Hee. After a particularly rough patch, Do Hee shows up at Young Nam’s door and the officer takes her in for the summer break. But Young Nam is hiding her own secrets.

A Girl at My Door was an ambitious low-budget film. Due to its content, July Jung could only secure $300,000 worth of funding. Bae Doo Na and Kim Sae Ron agreed to forgo their salaries. What was the terrible content? Young Nam was a lesbian. That fact alone seemed to be the reason the character was reassigned and treated as abnormal. The problem I had was that there were times the film came close to crossing the line with her relationship with Do Hee. Not because of sexual orientation but because of age. While the film attempted to show Yong Nam as only protecting Do Hee in a maternal manner, sharing a bath with a fourteen-year-old could be construed as inappropriate in any type of relationship, but especially one as a non-relative guardian. As a police officer she should have known better where to draw the lines regardless of her sexual orientation. Of course, when their relationship was called into question, everyone jumped to the homosexual equals pedophile conclusion which was rather infuriating, yet Young Nam knowing the state of homophobia still made questionable decisions as an officer of the law. Director July Jung seemed determined to blur lines which made it difficult to understand aspects of their relationship.

The film brought up the plight of illegal immigrants. How they were treated as less than, underpaid, overworked, and abused. Yong Ha’s actions were illegal. Yet nothing came of it. Yong Ha was known to beat Do Hee, something Young Nam warned him was a crime. Yet even after seeing the significant bruising on the child, she didn’t arrest him. Didn’t call child services. Do Hee was clearly a disturbed child after bearing daily emotional and physical abuse from Yong Ha and his mother. If anyone needed therapy it was this poor kid, yet none was ever offered. Do Hee made terrifying decisions that affected Young Nam and Yong Ha*. And finally, alcoholism was rampant in the scenic village. Young Nam drank at least 1.5 liters of soju every night. She managed to be a high functioning alcoholic, but it may have led to some of her questionable decisions. Maybe she should have focused on finding a therapist for herself and Do Hee.

There was a lot of pain, abusive behavior, mental illness, homophobia, racism, and alcoholism on display in this film. The adults made terrible decisions on a regular basis. Even Young Nam who tried to help Do Hee was guilty of leaving the child in a dangerous situation. As much as I wanted to root for Young Nam to be Do Hee’s surrogate mom, she really needed to hit rehab and get herself sorted out before dealing with an emotionally troubled child. Great performances by Bae Doo Na and the late Kim Sae Ron could not quite overcome the script’s shortcomings.

*Do Hee’s final actions against Yong Ha were understandable as he had started to show sexual interest in her. She did what she had to do to survive. But no rape kit or hospital visit? And they just kicked an underaged “rape” victim loose to go home by herself? Where was the concern for her when Young Nam was seen to be the problem?

Also, I have very real concerns about an underaged actor being in sexual scenes and sexualized.

The interviewers seemed to be very interested in Do Hee when the concern was she had been molested by Young Nam, but they had zero problem sending her home to a drunken guardian who beat the crap out of her as well as emotionally abused her. So as long as it was just daily physical and emotional abuse by a heterosexual man, that was okay?

Do Hee’s jealousy and possessiveness were dangerous, but understandable given her living conditions. Again, she needed therapy to understand what she was feeling and how to gain control over her violent outbursts. I still cannot comprehend them sending her home to a vicious guardian after the molestation charges or to an empty house after Yong Ha was arrested. Where was the care she so desperately needed? Also, Young Nam seemed to have no problem sending Do Hee home for the school year knowing nothing had changed at home with Yong Ha.

No concern that Do Hee could also be a murderer? Might have been self-defense but the film never said.

Lastly, the local police department didn’t seem to have a problem with having a woman as chief. They had no problem arresting her, even though they refused to arrest Yong Ha for his many crimes because he was integral to their local economy. At least the jerks who interrogated her apologized to her. This film could give a person whiplash.

The soup was bitter to the very end.

This series started off well enough with a great concept and acting. But somewhere towards the middle, it started to lose me because for all the trials and tribulations that Xiao Fan went through, you were secretly hoping (and praying) he'd find his backbone at some point, only to be ultimately disappointed (and infuriated) in the end.

Lu Qing and Xiao Fan were oil and water from the very beginning and no matter how much they tried to mix it just never worked. Lu Qing was a shit communicator and left Xiao Fan in the dark a lot of the times. And then there's just Xiao Fan who was always in the kitchen, over a pot of soup / porridge. Ultimately I wanted Xiao Fan to just break free of it all at the end, to find his own path and be able to stand on his own two feet confidently. But still he accepts Lu Qing's proposal instantly, even though everything inside of me was screaming 'NO!!!'.

Even though they ended up together in the end, I can't even say it was a happy ending. I needed so much more redemption for Xiao Fan. So the soup ran cold and so did my overall feeling for this series.

TDLR:

Pros:
- Great acting / cast
- The first half was great

Cons:
- Started to get a little redundant storywise halfway through with no real 'win' in the end.
- You can't really cheerlead Xiao Fan because nothing ever truly gets better.
- Series was too long, and even yet the finale was rushed. Also didn't like the inconsistent airing schedule while on air.

Overall:
- Worth one watch, maybe its better if you binge it all together.
- Wanted to feast on all the promising dynamics in this story, but was left with a cold bowl of soup, hatred for Lu Qing and disappointment for Xiao Fan.
