Physically Unskippable Title

Watched this on a whim solely because of the title and because I saw that the whole thing was only thirty minutes long altogether.

Despite being such a short series made for some kind of drama app thing, I still really appreciated a lot about it. This show actually looks really good visually despite being a very small, probably fairly low-budget production made by a small company. The acting was pretty good, I feel like they managed to build up some decent chemistry somehow over the course of only thirty minutes. The series definitely feels very fast-paced because it is trying to tell a story that is ultimately too complex for the amount of time it has to tell it. There are a lot of things that are clearly skipped over for the sake of time which makes it feel rushed. But it does manage to tie things together in the end for the most part. I do think the acting and production carried this overall though. Also the oddly good soundtrack?

I gotta say, something about this leaves me feeling a little empty though. This could have been an EXCELLENT full-length series or even a movie. But sadly, it's not, nor do I imagine they'd ever go back to try and turn this into something bigger like that. Oh well, it is what it is.

I really can't rate this any higher than a 6/10. Not bad for what it is, but not the best thing ever.

romance with ping issues ?

i genuinely liked it because it wasn’t afraid to be awkward, cringey, and funny (but not in a forced way). it’s a feel good slow burn love story between two gamers.

honestly there were a few plot holes here and there, but it didn’t really matter because the scenes between the main leads and even the second leads would make you kick your feet 🤣🤣. the business side of gaming was also interesting (stakeholders, investors, etc.), though half the time i didn’t fully get it HAHA.

i had to step away from The First Frost because it was such a heavy cdrama, but i promise i’ll finish it someday. 😭

A slow healing drama

I really enjoyed this show overall. I think that the cast was well casted and that they fit their roles very well. I honestly think this role fit Zhang Ruonan so perfectly like while watching I was like thats Wen Yifan, never did I think I was watching Zhang Ruonan.

I think my one plot critisism is the transition between Hong Kong and their relationship restarting. I feel like it should've been more clear as to why she just decided to stop being afraid of her hometown and abuser again. My best guess is that time helped her think more clearly? I dont know I just think the transition could've been cleaner.

Anyways I am quite satisfied with the pacing of their relationship. A lot of shows get the pacing off leading the show to be boring but I think this show does that well. I also really liked the plot with her abuser and the results of that plot.

I kind of wish they made the female lead express her love a bit more because it feels like he is so much more captivated by her or I wish that they had a storyline of the male lead being upset with her so that she would have to take the initiative first. I feel like something like that could've balanced the dynamic a bit better.

Overall, I had a very good time watching it but I think its not a perfect show for me because at times I found the main characters decisions abit irritating like she was dragging her sadness which just mad the show extra depressing at times. But I can overlook it.

Great Bromance, Great Fighting Sequences

For decades, Zhan Zhao has almost exclusively appeared alongside Justice Bao (Bao Zheng)—the real Northern Song scholar-official who served as Kaifeng's prefect. Think of Bao Zheng as China's answer to Solomon + Sherlock Holmes: wise, incorruptible, and supernaturally perceptive. Zhan Zhao, the fictional knight-errant (xia), repeatedly rescued Bao from assassinations and kidnappings before being formally assigned by the emperor to protect him and enforce justice. Together, they embodied the ideal Chinese balance of wen (civil virtue) and wu (martial strength)—righteous power serving wise justice.

Rarely has Zhan Zhao carried a drama alone. The few attempts—like the poorly produced Three Heroes and Five Gallants (2016) with Yan Yikuan—left fans wanting. That's why anticipation was high for Zhan Zhao Adventures: a solo vehicle for the Southern Hero, with Justice Bao appearing only as an off-screen mentor figure.

Set against the simmering political tensions of the Northern Song Dynasty, Zhan Zhao Adventures follows the legendary “Southern Hero” as he investigates a chain of assassinations, blackmails, flesh trade, smuggling rings, and forged documents that trace back to a royal conspiracy. He encounters Huo Linglong (Zhang Ruo Nan), a runaway noblewoman from Linglong Villa seeking freedom from an arranged marriage, and Bai Yutang (Fang Yi Lun), the charismatic, impulsive "Golden-Haired Rat" (one of the five gallants in previous movies/dramas), a martial artist with his own vendetta. The trio becomes truth friends who would sacrifice for each other, and together they ultimately expose the rebellion plot, confront allies in both court and underworld, and restore order… though at significant personal cost.

What I like:
- Yang Yang's martial arts performance is A+—visceral, precise, and physically committed. Fight sequences are among the best in recent C-drama. His great look in Zhan Zhao iconic red robe is particularly eye catching as an iconic hero we all love.
- The Bromance that steals the show. Fang Yi Lun as Bai Yutang is the drama's tonic. His introduction is fantastic, bringing heart, humor, and emotional range. His chemistry with Yang Yang is electric—their bromance is far more compelling than the romantic subplot. Sharp dialogue, at times childish, comedic timing, and a genuine growth arc make Bai Yutang unforgettable. His second-half regression into "impulsive mess" feels slightly inconsistent, but doesn't derail the performance.
- Cinematic cinematography, meticulous costumes, and atmospheric sets create an immersive historical world.
- Named weaponry, distinct poisons, and detailed martial arts sects reward wuxia fans. The lore feels lived-in, not expositional.
- Each character is crafted in details with their individual motives, emotions, and conflicts. Many of the motives may lead viewers to wrong conclusions only to discover later that it's not what it seems. For example, Zhan Zhao's desperate protection of Ming Zhu Er in finding out the truth about his family's killing makes the viewers nervous about what the actual truth was. Did Zhan Zhao kill the family as the antagonist alleged? Then there's Bai Yutang's big brother. Despite being a side character with limited screen time, Jin Xue Wen (Zuo Ye)'s story is both heart wrenching and regretful for his little brother.
- Individual cases serve as stepping stones in a continuous narrative, maintaining momentum and thematic cohesion. It works like a jigsaw puzzle, piecing each jigsaw together to form a bigger picture.
- This Zhan Zhao isn't the stoic paragon of the old days. He's wounded from the start—spitting blood, battling a poison that threatens to transform and kill him, carrying trauma that creates conflicts within the character. Despite his pains and weakness, Zhan Zhao still fights with real force to protect the public and those he loves.

Despite the constant criticism of Zhang Ruo Nan as Huo Linglong, I find Zhang Ruo Nan’s acting acceptable. Nonetheless, many feel she was miscast—describing her performance as "wooden" and lacking the spark the role demands. While I'm not entirely in love with the character's writing, I find her martial arts execution less problematic than online discourse suggests. While many viewers find her romance with Zhan Zhao feels scripted rather than organic, I find without romance is not a dealbreaker for this drama..

Final Verdict
Zhan Zhao Adventures is a visually stunning, ambitiously crafted wuxia that takes creative risks with a beloved icon. Its production quality, action sequences, and world-building absolutely deserve a higher rating than the current 7.7/10 (MyDramaList) or 6.9/10 (Douban). The decision to center Zhan Zhao's solo journey—free from Justice Bao's overshadowing presence—is refreshing, and the psychological depth given to the hero adds meaningful complexity.

Yes, it stumbles with pacing inconsistencies (I don't really think it's a big deal), an underdeveloped female lead (I'm not particular about this), and a hurried conclusion (many of the beloved characters' endings are just being brushed through with no real closure--this, I take issue with). I also wish they haven't written our beloved Ming Zhu Er's backstory this way that gives a bitter pill to the viewers. Nonetheless, it has created conflicts and emotional turmoils to viewers and the characters, and it has achieved its goal. Despite all these weaknesses, this drama's strengths—particularly the bromance core, fight choreography, settings and narrative— far outweigh its flaws.

Watch with patience through the middle act. Stick around for the bromance, the action, and the bold reimagining of a classic hero. You may not get a perfect resolution, but you'll witness a legend being rewritten—and that's worth the journey.

A great watch. Strongly recommended. Don’t miss this gem.

Vignettes

This micro-drama is loaded with chemistry, cuteness, and very little else, aside from product placement. There’s no plot. It’s a series of tiny slices of life through a couple’s beginnings. That’s it. It is charming though, as are the actors. It’s set and filmed in Korea, the cast are Thai, and the gay is strong. I enjoyed it, but the lack of plot does mean it’s not hugely memorable. The most outstanding thing is the cast. A must-watch if you like them, but otherwise it’s just a pleasant few moments. I recommend it, but only to fans of BL or the actors, and I wouldn’t press it.

A Sharp, Uncomfortable Mirror of Power, Politics, and the Filipino Psyche

Quezon completes Jerrold Tarog's Bayaniverse trilogy in spectacular fashion, trading the battlefields of Heneral Luna and Goyo for the ruthless arena of Philippine politics. Rather than presenting Manuel L. Quezon as a flawless national hero, the film tears down the mythology and reveals a brilliant, ambitious, manipulative, and deeply human politician whose pursuit of power often clashes with his ideals.

Jericho Rosales delivers a commanding performance, while Romnick Sarmenta, Mon Confiado, Karylle, Cris Villanueva, Sue Prado, and Iain Glen provide excellent support. The dialogue is sharp, the pacing engaging, and the film's satirical edge makes its political commentary feel surprisingly contemporary.

What makes Quezon stand out is how relevant it feels. The media manipulation, election theatrics, personality politics, and empty promises depicted on screen could easily be mistaken for today's headlines. Tarog once again refuses to offer simple heroes or villains, presenting politics as a messy game where everyone has something to gain and no one remains entirely innocent.

Visually impressive and packed with strong performances, Quezon succeeds as both a historical drama and a biting political satire. While its portrayal of Quezon can feel overwhelmingly critical at times and some historical liberties may divide audiences, the film's willingness to challenge long-held narratives makes it compelling viewing.

More than a biography, Quezon is a mirror held up to the Philippines—past and present. Thought-provoking, uncomfortable, and timely, it's one of the year's strongest Filipino films and a fitting conclusion to Tarog's remarkable trilogy.

A BL Seriously Short on Queer Credibility

This should have been a bromance, or have cast different leads. Nobody who can’t convincingly portray queerness should be cast over gay actors. Marginalised groups, even one of the more privileged of the queer demographics, should only be played by non-queer actors if they bring something really special to the role. Both of these gorgeous actors played male friendship well, but the straightness was so pungent, it obliterated the attempts to inject gay romance into the story. This would have been a perfectly nice story about two actors who had one another’s backs, with this cast. As it is it smacks of cashing in on queerness.

Both the leads are gorgeous, and for the most part the dub is great. The male manager was often cartoonishly voice acted, but everyone else was mostly good. I liked how much they did with an obviously low budget, and I there were some really pretty locations. It’s an easy watch, and worth watching. Just don’t expect any kissing worth seeing, or sexual tension. both are entirely absent.

I DON'T CARE WHAT YOUR GRUDGES ARE WITH ANY OF THE ACTOR BUT THIS SERIES IS A 10/10

The re-watch value for this series is go great!!! I mean since it has been released since last week Friday I have been constantly rewatching it, the acting, attention to details, the romance and the comedy is top work. Some of Thai bl actors don't exactly know how to act and that's the truth.... But you see this series, it's not cringey to watch at all, the acting is executed perfectly! And the romance don't even feel forced at all, like you could understand the emotions leading to certain decisions just by observing the actors face and the way the emotions are portrayed.
This series is a 10/10..

I don't know if I will finish this??

I just don't know if I can continue watching this drama. It was so good at the beginning, but then it kind of fell off.

The beginning had such a strong story, and the main couple had really strong interactions. It made me sad because I really thought it was going somewhere great.

I also felt so sorry for the ML—he deserved so much better. That’s part of why the FL started to annoy me. I understood some of her actions, but in a lot of moments, the way she treated him was frustrating to watch.

I find all the characters annoying because they refuse to communicate or talk things through. It feels like the story will stay stuck, then suddenly blow up for no reason. That made the show really frustrating for me.

The FL never seems to want to talk or communicate, and the same goes for the ML. I just don't know if I can continue watching, and honestly I'm not sure if I will finish it.

A decade late is still better than never

I'm sure there are doctoral thesis based on this drama. Not to mention thousands of reviews online so let's not go down that well trodden path.

I'll just share some thoughts with readers who managed to miss this 11 years old gem. Yes, 🫵🏻!

Let's start with the easy bit. JUST GO WATCH IT!

Now the tough bit. This show is full of triggers. Child abuse, abandonment, mental illness, extreme violence, suicide, etc, etc. It really is not for everyone. You have been warned.

Still reading? Good. This is an amazing story, made with love by some of the best actors of our generation. Sure, some of them were just starting their careers, but there is no hiding their talents. As I told a chingu, it is like trainspotting for drama tragics. :)

The story is complicated and might even shock you. When all are revealed, it makes perfect sense. Until then, there are quite a bit of flashbacks to a certain event and from different perspectives. There are misunderstandings and red herrings so don't assume you got it and switch off.

The FL is personality+. Loud and fast talking. This is sort of her signature style. Think of this role as the prototype. However, she is more than that, much more. You will laugh and cry with her in time.

One thing that is front and centre is the ML's acting. This is his show. He played 7 different roles. They are all radically different from each other. He is all in with his commitment.

I thought Yoo Yeon-seok did well when he played multiple roles in Phantom Lawyer, but this is next level. Heck, next, next level. The ML is in different characters for many scenes, some lasting almost an entire ep. You will grow to love (or hate) some of them.

Team Do Hyeon and Team Se Gi is a thing even after a decade. It will hit you hard when we have to say goodbye to them.

Speaking of tears, this show is sort of a tear jerker. Not in the traditional dam bursting sense though. The clever writing will ambush you. Little touches and fragments of dialogue will hit you in the feels when you are least expected.

Finally, don't binge it, chingu. It is tempting, I know. It is a tough watch, both in terms of emotional weight and the amount of details you need to absorb. Pace yourself. This is a marathon, not a race. ;)

So, what are you waiting for? Go forth and immerse yourself in this masterpiece. A decade late is still better than never. 👍🏻 Peace.

Disliked Yan Yin An's acting but the plot has substance

I was in the mood for mermaid / merman short dramas so I picked My Dear Mermaid. I have heard of Alpha because he acted with Han Jia Hui but Yan Yin An was unfamiliar to me. This drama was an OK watch.

What I liked:
1. Plot - For a short mini drama, the storyline has substance. ML and antagonisthad good arcs. Enough drama for lighthearted drama.
2. Visuals - Alpha and Fu Xue Yan's visuals certainly grabbed my attention.
3. Fantasy - I liked the fantasy elements especially the alter ego.
4. Duration - Fast-paced drama probably just outside of 1 hour running time.
5. Characters - ML was ok but the green prime minister was funny.

What I disliked:
1. Acting - I didn't enjoy this drama because of Yan Yin An's acting. She didn't have the main character aura and not because of her plain visuals. I felt she was more suited playing supporting characters. There was zero chemistry between her and Alpha. They were awkward with no ice broken between them.
2. FL characterisation - I felt her character had the least impact out of three. She seemed ditzy & immature.
3. Romance - Lacklustre. They never seemed to be genuinely attracted to each other. It felt more like they were together because fate has told them so.

Very enjoyable light rom-com

This show is exactly what it's supposed to be: A very enjoyable romantic story with some light fun comedy. Most of the 'drama' is lightweight and resolved fairly quickly. The only things that are dragged out are the initial plot premise deceptions between the ML & FL - that's dragged out past it's usefulness but at least when the big reveals happen the show doesn't endlessly drag out the subsequent resolution of the trauma that results. So while this is a very, very slow developing romance - slight spoiler: the first kiss doesn't happen until well past the halfway mark of the show - otherwise the show moves at a fairly brisk pace. Things do happen in each episode and until the final couple of episode long time-wasting montage scenes are minimized.

The two leads , Zheng He Hui Zi and Miles Wei, have very good chemistry and look great together. Both carried their roles beautifully and somehow managed to sell the idea that two characters could act like stalkers of each other and it not be creepy - indeed it's cute and romantic!. And the second couple is just fantastic. I really would love to see Chen Hao Lan and Li Jun Xian get lead roles - together or separately - because both actors feel like they can carry a lead role. I especially was impressed with Chen Hao Lan. She plays a very dynamic role as the FL's bestie with her own dramatic story arc of ups & downs. And Li Jun Xian is simultaneously handsome and charming and yet a total goofball when necessary, in hilarious fashion.

The production values of this show are solid, with lots of great wardrobe, settings artwork and really nice soundtrack. A few prop quibbles and oversights but nothing worth crying about.

My only real complaint is just my common complaint I have about how for some reason c-drama writers so often feel obligated to include some sort of 'love triangle', which in this show is in the form of the annoyingly pathetic Li Shi Can character. He plays the part of the stereotypical 'unrequited love interest' who pines pathetically for the FL, but is doomed to be forever friend-zoned. His character was just so pathetic and selfish and boring to watch. Just a pointless waste of screen time and take my advice and just skip rapidly through any scenes with him in it - even some that include the leads. You really won't be missing anything good in this show by skipping his scenes. The writers could easily have left him out completely.

A Drama I Can Rewatch Again and Again

This drama is pure comfort and laughter! It's one of those shows I can rewatch anytime I need something fun and light-hearted. The side characters are hilarious—especially Chubby. He cracked me up in every scene!

I also LOVED Lu Sicheng's flirty personality. The main couple's chemistry was adorable! I love a drama with good side couples, and this show did not disappoint. They were so cute too.

Easily one of my favorite shows!!!!!

I can see how this drama might not be everyone's favorite because it can be a little cringe at times, but I found it really funny. I also thought the storyline was interesting because I had never watched a show like this before, so it felt fresh and unique to me.

Overall, I found this drama entertaining, heartwarming, and incredibly fun to watch.
