this movie is just wonderful. Or should I say, beautiful. Because yes, everything in this movie is beautiful. The acting, the story, the setting (omg this island is so beautiful!!), ...
I was a bit reluctant at first because I knew it would be a total surreal story but since I like Kang dong won I decided to still watch it; and actually, yes it's fantasy but it's a beautiful fantasy. The ending fits well. The fantasy was handed really well and its scene were really beautiful. (Am I repeating myself? Nope. It's beautiful, im telling you! )
Story: like I said, it was perfect. I was afraid that it would get boring (2h+ of movie, come on!) but It wasn't at all. The pace was good and made you feel the emotions really well.
Acting: perfect. Even the little boy were very good at acting. The little girl was especially good too!
Music: it was quite good.none of the soundtrack especially marked me, But it fit really well the movie, adding tension when you need it, etc. Maybe a little more would've been nice!
Rewatch value: I'll probably watch it. No, certainly I will watch it again; but probably after some time.
Anyway, it's one of those long movie that gets you all emotional (or not) with a bit of supernatural. If you're a Kang dong won fan, a supernatural-related things fan or someone who loves that kind of long movie that makes you forget everything else, then watch it!
The only thing I wasn't satisfied with was that it didn't hit me in DA FEELS that much. But that could be only a personal feeling so just judge by yourself :)

However, for TTV shows like these, if you've seen one...
They're predictable, cookie-cutter affairs that are ripe with mellow-drama, Disney-style humor, and OTT performances, which is what they're supposed to be. Formulaic.
TaiwaneseTV producers know all too well who the hell their target audience is and more importantly that they're willing to spend money on products that are carefully displayed (product placement) throughout the episodes.
Anywho, what I find entertaining and interesting about these shows is how Taiwanese culture defines romance and gender roles.
Unfortunately for Aaron Yan's character, Yi Qi, I was introduced to the role of the romantic male lead for the first time or who I would come to know as the lead asshole -- an arrogant, condescending prick who gets a free pass for being a dick because he has mommy issues. Of course, he's good looking, earns a lot of money and is well educated so he knows better than everybody else, meaning he has the power. He's in control. In most of the TTV dramedies I've watched, this has been the case.
Enter Puff Kuo's character, Liang Liang, who I absolutely adored. Her eyes are amazing. I mean, why else would I give a rat's ass that her goldfish died. Liang Liang is so likable to the point that I felt that no man deserved her attention, much less her affection. I was hoping at some point early on that the writers would have her character exhibit more independence and kickassery. But after watching all 39 episodes of this show I've learned, sadly, that that type of female character is not popular.

Some of the characters I liked at 1st ended up being disliked, and the ones I disliked ended up being liked very much more than the original ones. The unexpected deaths, though, those were really what caught me off guard. Still, this is a good drama I'd recommend to anybody who likes historical fiction.
10/10 from me!

Lee Jong Hyun also shows sides of his acting ability never before seen, from silent, tough Busan namja to goofy pabo, but then slips back into his Busan namja leading man image again when required.
Together, they are golden. Their dramatic scenes are great, but what surprises is how well the play the comedic, slapstick humorous parts so well. It it obvious they are totally comfortable with each other. And the kiss scenes (5) well, I needed to turn up the A/C to cool down after watching them. Full on, open lips smooching like I've seen in only a few other Korean rom/coms. It's obvious to me they brought their A game to this drama, but I believe it is because they bring the best out in each other.
The script wanders and has a tendency to get lost at times, and there is a lot of replaying of old scenes, but the goofy, quirky, off center, sometimes slightly raunchy humor surprised and delighted me. It is as if they are portraying a tongue-in-cheek parody of Korean period dramas and the actors who star in them.
All in all a light-hearted piece of time slip rom-com that will have you laughing out loud in parts, and crying in others. I really enjoyed it. I hope they produce a Season 2 showing Ondal adapting to Korea in modern times. i t would be a hoot!

Overall, the production quality is great imo. Some of the camera shots are amazing.
The characters are fun to watch in the beginning and hooks you in. Unfortunately, it gets very melodramatic around the halfway point.
The cast is great, even greater for kdrama fans, especially for fans of good-looking male kdrama actors. They seem to have got them all in 1 drama.

The story is exactly the same : Same jerk prince who cannot say a simple no to his ex, same annoying evil characters, and pretty much all the things the same.
What is different: the weeding is beautiful I must say, the landscapes are worth seeing, is not made in high school but university, she behaves more (a little bit) as a princess who knows her place and duty...but NO ROMANCE okay, the actress has a no kiss policy so you will only get real kisses from the ex girlfriend and the prince...yes, the second female leads get the real kisses.
The romance that was Goong is not there, and I don't think is blame in the actors (besides yes the no kissing policy) cause I can feel the chemistry is just like..something is off. I'm on episode 13-14 and they haven't get a real romantic scene. I give the story a 6 because is the same story, acting I think they are doing good with the script they have because is not the best. Music...Repetitive, boring. I will end this drama by habit of watching it but I think I could be using my time better watching Two Moons or something.

The story is really good. It is very realistic. I see it happening even while watching the film. However, the actors could have done better. I'm not saying the acting was a total crap, but they failed to properly relay the emotions from the characters to the viewer... or, perhaps it was the camera man that didn't capture them... or, perhaps the director intentionally made things ambiguous to the audience... or, perhaps I was just not paying much attention--UGH! This is why I have to watch it again sometime.

I can't fault (most) of the actors. They had very little with which to work. The script is almost nonexistent. There were so many directions the writer could have taken to make this an interesting remake. Instead the producers decided that the names of actors, pretty scenery, and beautiful costumes were enough to justify this horrendous piece of work. The director didn't help matters with his choices (again, sorry actors.) Editing was sloppy and use of music was even worse. I don't expect a masterpiece when watching any drama but I do hope that out of respect for those watching, those involved would strive for excellence and not just ratings. Very disappointing! This definitely goes down as the worst drama ever watched!
