Fun Dramedy with a Strange Message
(I'll warn you when I spoil, which is basically the end of the story.)I Middle-aged dude software engineer in corporate China loses job and scrambles to find employment to take care of his family and keep their home. Jobs are so hard to find he ends up becoming a delivery 'boy' and perhaps he's too old for the job. But he perseveres to admirable yet mixed results.
The story stars writer/director/actor Xu Zheng -- and he's absolutely great. What brought me eyes to this film was starlet Xin Zhi Lei, but she did her job as a bait and switch actress. Don't see this film to see her -- she's barely in it. And any number of actresses could have played this role. I think Xu Zheng wanted a hottie by his side, and with Xin Zhi Lei -- who can blame him.
The big star of this story is the pacing. Despite being two hours long it's pacing makes it feel much faster. Although this piece has a low budget feel, the sheer number of locations will blow your mind. This delivery company, like the film crew, are all over this city.
My problem with this film was its ultimate point. What exactly was the Xu Zheng trying to say?
One the one hand there was a rather kind message: don't look down on those people delivering your food, you privileged bastards. These delivery people (apparently) work like dogs and are humans too. There's a really nice series of shots at one point where it showed all the delivery people smiling. That they took pride in their work. Teeth and humanity.
My problem was the second message in the story, that was as realistic as it was kind of sad.
(SPOILERS)
Our hero literally risks his life doing as many deliveries as possible to keep his home and family safe. He eventually loses his home and ends up in a smaller place, presumably an apartment. His wife says it's okay because it reminds her of her childhood. The message here is the cliche that we grew up poor but were happier when we were poor. This message is repeated when our hero goes to the home of one of his co-workers and it's basically a narrow shack in an unpleasant area.
The story is saying family is more important than financial security. Hmm. Really? America right now is going thru an affordability crisis and most of us believe financial security is the best way to taking care of your family. I presumed this was a global truth that the Chinese would particularly agree with. But instead this film says "Being fired happens all the time, and beside you're getting old so you kinda should expect this." Hmm...
So the story's message is enjoy what you got instead of what you need, because if you have family you've got all you need. Really? And what if you don't have a family? I guess your co-workers become that? Like I said, strange message.
Despite this major messaging flaw, it's worth seeing if interested. The problem is it's not a strong recommend.

Funny & Refreshing
Mr. Queen was one of the most refreshing K-dramas I've ever watched. At the time, I had never seen anything quite like it. The unique premise, hilarious comedy, and excellent performances made it stand out from other historical dramas. What really made the show work was the acting. The cast fully committed to the absurdity of the story, and the result was both hilarious and surprisingly heartfelt. The soundtrack was also memorable and complemented the drama perfectly.
Funny, creative, entertaining, and completely different from anything else I had watched at the time.

A piece of realism
Love story in the 1970’s (30.05.2026)As the name suggests, the story takes place in the 1970’s. The story fleshes out the life in 1970 as accurately as possible. The plot relies heavily on realism and the life ordinary people. There is nothing flashy just people trying to survive and figure out living. Main characters Fei Ni and Fang Mu Yang were classmates. During that time Fei Ni thought that Fang Mu Yang was the spawn of her ill fortune. They cross paths again years later when Fang Mu Yang decides to return to his hometown, Jiangcheng. Fang Mu Yang becomes a hero by saving people during a flood. In the process he takes an injury to his brain and forgets everything. In the hope to earn a place from college, Fei Ni takes care of “Hero” Fang Mu Yang. For personal gains they get into a contract marriage. After overcoming obstacles together, they realize their feelings are mutual.
This drama differs from many other things I have watched. It sounds out with its realistic and honest nature. No bluffing, just the life of people who are figuring out life and trying to make changes. I noticed lots of elements of positivity from many characters. Humans being humans is a short explanation. They make mistakes, they ask for forgiveness, they change, they communicate. Relationships are not some kind of out of the ordinary people having the “perfect romance” but people who express their love differently, whether it is words or actions. It doesn’t need to be expensive gifts or material things, what matters the most is that they’re striving to support one another at any time. Being present, cheering for each other’s success is what makes their relationship special. Especially Fang Mu Yang and Fei Ni are the best example of this type of relationship. They tried to understand each other, give a helping hand when they were troubled. I remember when Fei Ni needed a TV coupon so that her brother could get a job. She never once asked FMY to do anything about it but he was prepared all along. When FMY’s drawings weren’t accepted for the comic, she found the papers and made a collection, surprising him on the rooftop. The way they appreciate each other makes me as the watcher really touched. There are many other scenes like how he brought a vinyl because he knew she loved playing on he piano but didn’t have the chance to or when he asked permission for a library that belonged to Mrs. Fu because she loved books so much or when FN came to defend his comic because Mr.Yuan wanted to make changes that FMY didn’t want. This main couple has a very special aspect of optimism. When they are in a rough patch, they believe they can make things better and that their effort would never be wasted. They fought until they achieved what they wanted. This teaches that people shouldn’t be afraid of rejections or bad moments in life as the brighter days are still ahead…
"To be honest, I never thought I’d fall for you. It’s not that you’re bad. I’ve known you since Grade 3. Back then, I knew we weren’t the same kind of people. You splurged a lot. To put it nicely, you were carefree and optimistic. But frankly, you were reckless. That being said, it was you who made me understand that no matter how hard life is, when two people share it, it becomes lighter. And you taught me life isn’t only about distant goals. It’s also about the scenery right in front of you."
This quote made me remember something. FMY starts spending his money carefully because he knows family takes responsibility and changes his habits. Another example of cuteee moments
Fang Mu Jing and Qu Hua
Their story is relatively simple but enjoyable. Two people, one wanted marriage because she was a lookalike of some lover in the past, the other one wanted a better background. FMJ doesn’t realize his feelings are genuine and not because she looked like Yan. He didn’t know her feelings were genuine as she carried that kind of aura, a person who can let go of anyone easily. Deep down FMJ was hurt and wanted someone to stay with her, truly and only for her. Their love story is not my favorite but it is definitely not the worst.
Ye Feng and Ling Yi
Perfect match as in being the worst (Ling Yi even worse). Ye Feng couldn’t figure out much without his mother. He was setting standards for a girl HE was chasing? He was pushing boundaries while he was pursuing FN. He is too arrogant. There is his wife Ling Yi (cheater) who can’t seem to decide between men. For her, whoever has a blossoming career or whoever that can help her get a blossoming career is suitable. She thinks she can bend and break all the rules because she had a bad past but clearly she was a manipulator from the beginning, maybe not when she was in a pig farm but definitely when she was chasing YF, gaslighting him into thinking he was missing out on someone good. Trying to get empathy at any point she was in trouble and her selfishness really fed me up. She got what she deserved.
Fei Ting and Lin Mei couple
Fei Ting was dealing with job dissatisfaction while Lin Mei struggled with her family who only saw her as a way to earn a position for their son. I love how they dealt with their problems while trying to understand one’s situation. Their story was wrapped up nicely, love it.
Feng Lin
Dare I say the biggest and nastiest jealous person in the story. She just tries to make everyone’s life miserable as if it makes hers look better. All the time I was hesitating to punch the screen. She came up with every possible way to get FN in trouble over a small grudge. I stressed so much because of her because I kept thinking “Oh this little nasty pos is somehow gonna find a way to turn this situation worse for FN”. I hated her so much and good job acting WYY! When she was left without anything in her life I laughed so much. Even in dramas where villains are so much hateful, I never once felt that way but Feng Ling, I couldn’t stop cackling when she was getting hit by karma one by one. That was such a satisfactory ending, couldn’t ask for more!
I need to conclude this here. In short this drama was very realistic, not afraid of showing the true life of common people in the 1970’s while also capturing the beauty of relationships of that era. 10/10. Will miss it!!!

Dear lord when I get to heaven....
My ADHD brain starts playing Young and beautiful every time I see them. Barth & Tanrak own that song. The making quality and production value looks very good, significantly better than typical GMM productions. Cinematography and lighting is also well done. The pace is slow, but it's only the first episode. The opening was great & they have set everything up nicely.
It probably will not be a conventional happy ending, bittersweet maybe (prove me wrong please).
I really really genuinely hope this lives up to the expectations. Amen.

DWY is that BL ♥️
Honestly at first, I was brushing off the cringey parts as the comedic essence of the series. I said to myself I'll just keep on watching to finish what I started. But one thing I can definitely say now is that I am on my nth rewatch. Everytime I finish the last ep, I end up going back to the first episode immediately. That's how hooked I am with DuangQin (in the series) and TeeteePor in real life! And the OST's, omo chef's kiss. Everything is soooo good. I also ended up stanning DEXX 😍
I badly need someone I can make endless talks about this series. This is such a comfort series for me ♥️

First Impression: Payback
Overall: the first episode is gritty and promising. Note: this is based on a manhwa/webtoon of the same name. I haven't read the source material and will review the series based on it's own merits. 10 episodes about 45 minutes each. Airing on iQIYI https://www.iq.com/play/payback-uncut-episode-1-1h8pgey90dg?lang=en_usContent Warnings: there are a ton in episode 1, I'm keeping this spoiler free for now
What I Liked
- unique, gritty vibe
Room For Improvement
- I was a little confused due to multiple timeline jumps and characters who changed hair color (update: note that the source material does this as well so it is a faithful adaptation in that regard)

Very interesting
The acting in this show is really great! The two lead actors make me really invested in the show as I am just drawn in by their unique backstories and their characters. I can’t wait to see how they develop! The cinematography I find to be very entrancing as well. I like how they color graded the different scenes depending on the overall mood of the scene, and I really like the sets they made as well, to accurately portray the backdrop in which the story is set in.

Best C-Drama Ever (The Ultimate Masterclass in Character)
🎬 The Gist 🎬The Double is a high-stakes, fast-paced revenge plot featuring a hyper-competent, resilient female lead #WuJinYan and a formidable, cunning male lead #WangXingyue. It is a psychological thriller, a political chess match, and a story of profound companionship. After being betrayed and literally buried alive by her scholar husband, Xue Fangfei survives and assumes the identity of Jiang Li—the abandoned daughter of the Grand Chancellor—to seek justice. The protectors are refreshingly confident without the need to dominate, and the villains are brilliantly layered in shades of grey.
💡 🌟 The Modernity of its Themes: Breaking the "Purity" TropeSet in a strict Neo-Confucianism era, The Double radically rejects the "purity" trope by refusing to weaponize a woman’s marital past as a source of shame. There are no insecure monologues where Xue Fangfei feels "unworthy" of the unmarried Duke Su due to her past marriage or lack of virginity. Her protectors, Xiao Heng and Ye Shijie, never reduce her value to her marital status, boldly proving a woman's worth lies entirely in her intellect and resilience.
🦊 Duke Su / Xiao Heng: 🕺 The Secure WarriorHe is the perfect antidote to toxic, controlling male leads. Powerful yet deeply secure, he never seeks to diminish or dominate Fangfei. Wang Xingyue masterfully uses micro-expressions—a tight jaw, moist eyes—to convey a storm of protective worry. He fiercely respects her autonomy, letting her lead her own battles while he silently neutralizes deadly variables behind the scenes. Ultimately, he provides absolute psychological safety; the heavily traumatized heroine can only sleep soundly in the presence of the kingdom's most lethal warrior.
♟️ Xue Fangfei / Jiang Li: 💃🏻 The Expansion of the SoulHer journey marks profound moral growth. She transforms from a broken woman seeking narrow personal revenge into a leader willing to risk everything to protect innocent strangers. Her emotional healing transitions beautifully from her broken courtyard declaration ("Use my life as a chess piece") to a playful, confident partnership with Duke Su as they legally tie their fates together to conquer the political landscape.
🏛️ The Paradox of Weak Men & Grey Villains 👽
The drama proves that righteousness without confidence is easily manipulated. Minister Jiang is an upright statesman but a domestic coward, easily manipulated into abandoning his daughter for household peace. In contrast to the secure masculinity of Duke Su and Ye Shijie, the villains are masterclasses in tragic psychology. Shen Yurong is a delusional narcissist who reframes Fangfei's disgust as "obsession" to justify his crimes, while Princess Wanning is a shattered antagonist whose toxic madness stems from a brutal past as a political hostage.
🔥 The Masterful Slow-Burn & Domestic Trust ❤️
Following Tong'er's tragic death, their bond deepens from strategic allies to a devoted, unshakeable couple. Duke Su completely abandons his detached spymaster persona—instinctively discarding clothing that triggers her trauma, and playfully oversharing court secrets like a husband debriefing his wife. Fangfei's reckless nature pushes his composure to the breaking point; the news of him trading the Fish Army talisman for her freedom causes her to break down in panic, finally forcing them to discard their masks. Their dynamic permanently shifts into an unbreakable, transparent front, anchored by his ultimate vow: "Live your life to the fullest and never compromise to please others, not even me."
🔁 Why this is perfect for rewatching: ❤️❤️❤️
True romance in this thriller isn't about grand speeches; it's about practical, respectful actions in the middle of chaos. Every single time you rewatch, you uncover another layer or nuance to a character or an event. Whether it is her jumping on his back out of a subconscious reflex of absolute trust over a tiny rat, or the micro-shifts in their political maneuvering, every viewing reveals new psychological layers. An absolute masterpiece.

⚖️ Postscript: On the Violence and "Misogyny" Claims
Critics claiming the brutal violence against female characters makes the drama misogynistic, confuse historical accuracy with narrative intent. Modelled after the turbulent Five Dynasties (907–960 AD) and Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD), the script accurately reflects an era of harsh institutional cruelty toward women. However, The Double removes passive victims. It gives women absolute agency as the primary drivers of the political chess match. The complex "vamps" are tragic products of a brutal era, explicitly proving that the true villainy lies in weak, cowardly men who held power but lacked the spine to protect them.

A splendid watch
Not often a reviewer but wanted to drop a few words for this one as I thoroughly enjoyed this series from beginning to end. Everything was beautifully woven together with such attention to detail: the plot, romance, family politics etc that the progression just felt very natural. I found FL’s character very likable and fresh. She was independent and strong yet embodied the spirit of a woman who has just come of age. I particularly enjoyed watching different relationships she had with others. Through her relationships with various male characters, we witnessed her experience everything from a first crush and true love to a soulmate and a profound sibling bond. Her heart warming relationship with her maternal grandma was well juxtaposed with the coldness of her paternal side. The grandma was formidable and the emperor was refreshing, a very enjoyable cast to watch. The last couple of episodes were emotionally intense with many cast members giving an emotionally heavy hearted performance which got me tearing. I’m a sucker for romance, so like others I would love to have had a little more to the last few minutes of the ending. However, many dramas suffer from editing issues and abrupt endings which I’m guessing is to squeeze in the 40 episode limit. Overall this series was solid for me and ending was decent enough that I won’t let it take away the regard I have for this drama. I would highly recommend this drama. Was this review helpful to you?

Who wants to frame weiyoung:YES
I have been watching Asian dramas for quite some time and this is one of the dramas that broke me but also the first drama I have sat down and wrote a review about. The story distracted me from how long ago this came out and the acting did it for me especially when they never gave up on their relationship.i have to say that the last few episodes did feel rushed because the emperor died then when prince gaoyang was about to inherit prince nan'an forcefully became the emperor and forced weiyoung to be his empress, and he even to the extent of dieing for her in the end.Changru killing herself to be with prince nan'an was unexpected,I thought she would live for him and their "child" but did the child even exist?I wish weiyoung had split the pill or begged hong lou to try and find the recipe or li changle shouldn't have wished them to never be together for long in this life but I guess that was their destiny.54 episodes were not enough to for all those incidents like how can than many people die and get hurt just because of the tittle of "The Emperor of Wei". I shouldn't be pouring this much emotion into a series but what can I say this series broke me to pieces,as I write l am in tears telling myself it's just a series Atleast they got to be together in this modern lifetime,(Li weiyoung)Xin'er and Touba Jun till we meet again.54 episodes
1 week of watching
countless giggles and heartbreaks
start date 24 may
finish date 30 may
1 year from this date I will experience the joys and sorrows of "The Princess Weiyoung"

100/10 a must-watch best drama I’ve seen in a long time
The Perfect Masterclass in Character BuildupPursuit of Jade understands something that so many modern romance dramas fail to grasp: true emotional chemistry must be earned. The drama takes its time in the beginning, moving deliberately to establish the world, the high stakes, and the complex inner lives of its leads. But unlike dramas that are slow just to fill runtime, this initial slower pace serves a brilliant purpose. It lets you watch the bricks of their relationship being laid one by one. By the time they fully align, you aren't just watching a romance; you are completely invested in a bond forged through shared trials, mutual respect, and profound trust.
A Modern Blueprint for the Power Couple
The defining triumph of this storyline is how it completely flips the script on standard romance tropes:
A Truly Strong, Independent Female Lead: She is a breath of fresh air. Fierce, brilliant, and completely capable of holding her own, she doesn't exist to be rescued, and she never slips into repetitive, annoying communication roadblocks. She has absolute agency in her own story.
The Ultimate Supportive Partner: Zhang Linghe’s character represents the absolute peak of the "supportive partner" archetype. He doesn't try to dim her light, override her decisions, or play the overbearing protector. Instead, he stands beside her as a true equal—a rock in her life who respects her strength and supports her independence unconditionally. Their dynamic is mature, powerful, and incredibly refreshing.
If you have tracked Zhang Linghe’s filmography through his various historical and modern roles, Pursuit of Jade is undeniably the moment everything clicked into place. This is the drama where he transforms from a highly capable actor into an absolute powerhouse leading man.
His acting has reached a stunning new level of nuance and maturity here. He commands the screen not just with physical presence, but with subtle, deeply expressive micro-expressions. The way he watches the female lead, the quiet gravity he brings to the high-stakes political maneuvers, and his sheer emotional range show an immense growth in his craft. It is impossible not to fall completely in love with him in this role.
From a brilliant storyline to an unassailable power couple, Pursuit of Jade delivers everything a top-tier drama should. It is addictive enough to steal your sleep and so beautifully executed that the moment the final credits roll, you want to jump right back to episode one to experience the buildup all over again. A true masterclass in storytelling.

A wonderful K-drama
Oh my god/ I'm loving this K-drama. I adore both leads and the story is so interesting. The dynamic between them is fantastic, and especially the way they look at each other... wow! The way they explain the past and present is quite interesting. The set design, the music, and the acting are all top-notch. I had seen the lead actress act before and she really surprised me with this role. As for the lead actor, I had seen him in other K-dramas as a supporting actor and he always caught my attention more, so I'm very happy that he has this lead role. Was this review helpful to you?
Disturbing but so well executed
This was really intense and disturbing. The scenes where the girls were stalked and murdered weren't nearly as shocking as the police brutality. It was horrible to watch. Those people were pure evil. Of course, this just shows what a great job was done by the producers and actors, etc. Even though it was upsetting, it was a really good drama. One thing I found interesting is that the good guy wasn't all good, he had an edge to him, and the bad guy wasn't all bad, he seemed to have some sensitivity, even though it was fake most of the time. I feel even more unsettled after finding out that this was a true story. Was this review helpful to you?

strong start but poor finish
first I want to mention that the amount of focus that the director played on the hairdresser and makeup artist element was just so unessesary I feel like this genuinely doesn’t fit in with the concept of the drama at all. At first i watch derailment thinking abt the sci-fi element but there really was none and also I didn’t even realise that this drama was labelled romance but I mean I do see some sense of love but I wouldn’t nessessarily call it romance it just seemed so raw. I think that if they had stuck with the parallel universe thing rather than the random sleeping chamber idea it would have been better or at least change the idea of that a bit to make it more entertaining.overall I probably wouldn’t recommend

Disappointing and filled with absurd tropes – I had to watch it on 2x speed.
This is officially the first time I’ve ever had to fast-forward through a K-drama, and it’s entirely because of the female lead. From minute one, her character completely pulled me out of the story. I just can't stand nosy, arrogant, and self-entitled characters. She was so exhausting that she made me lose all interest in the show. To be clear, I have nothing against the actress, she’s just doing her job, but this insufferable character was simply too much.On a positive note, the relationship between the villagers and Mechoori (Ahn Hyo-seop) was really heartwarming. Even when they got mad at him, those moments were still salvageable and sweet.
However, the drama is packed with tired clichés, and the female lead's sleepwalking subplot was an absolute joke. A sleepwalker who goes out for walks, finds her way back home perfectly, and can somehow type in the door's security code? Come on. Then she wakes up with cuts on her feet and just brushes it off like it’s a normal Tuesday? But the absolute peak of absurdity was her ability to call the exact person she wanted while fast asleep. Out of a thousand contacts, her sleeping brain magically dials the same number every time. I just couldn't take it seriously.
And don't get me started on him. Can anyone explain to me how he managed to travel all the way from the village to Seoul just in time to save her from almost getting run over that night? The logic completely flew out the window.
Overall, a frustrating watch.
