End of the Year BL Review

Hello! I was bored on this fine Wednesday evening, so I decided to create these questions for BL lovers out there to answer! It's been another spectacular year full of BLs (more than we've ever seen) and I'd like to dedicate a discussion to where we can discuss our favorite/least favorites of this year and our most anticipated for next year!

1. These don't have to just be BLs that aired in 2021, but what you've watched overall this year. 

2. You can also use BLs that are still ongoing and will carry into 2022 if you want!

3. You don't have to answer all these questions, cause there's a bunch. Just answer the ones that you feel like you can discuss the best.

I know we still have a bunch of time before the end of the year, but I'm just posting now so that you can start thinking about these questions. 

I myself probably won't answer these until after Christmas or even later than then. (I still have about 6 series I want to finish before finalizing this.)

2. Fav first kiss would have to be earth&mix in TOTS. 4. Fav main couple for this year pond&phuwin. 

5. Fav side couple and I think they are really underrated is tenon&Sugus like they low key carried golden blood lol.

• MorkPi, Fish Upon the sky (Thai BL, their first kiss was kinda cute & innocent. You can tell it really is their first kiss LOL.)

• A Tale of Thousand Stars (Mad respect and appreciation for all of the cast members, production crew and P'aof the director with what they had to go through to give us this beautiful series!)

• K&Cream, More than blue series (Taiwanese drama. I swear to god after watching this series I felt so mentally and emotionally drained but in a GOOD way!)
• WooYeoDami, My roommate is a Gumiho (Kdrama. I don’t mind the age gap as ML is technically an immortal being and IRL the actors are close in age. Their relationship in the drama was healthy IMO.)
• LeYanHaoDu, The Long Ballad (Chinese drama. Character development is great and more interesting than main couple IMO)
• EunTaekHorang, Live On (Enemies to lovers & character development for the FL was quite good. Loved how patient the ML was with FL and the drama’s touch on the topic of bullying.)

12. Favourite OST for 2021

• Unbreakable Love & You don’t belong to me by Eric Chou
• Everything, Closer, Deep, Your Smile, Click, Together & For You by SCRUBB from 2gether the series (Although 2gether the series was 2020, I re-watched it and got addicted to the songs only now. )
• Just friends by Nanon Korapat from Bad Buddy.

13. Top 5 Fav series of 2021 (Hetero)

• Youth of May (Kdrama, based on the real-life events that happened in Korea during wartime, not many people continued watching and dropped it cause it was too depressing. But I watched it because it was a star-crossed lovers trope so....)
• Our secret (Chinese Drama. Cute high-school first love & (kinda) enemies to lovers trope.)
• Koi Desu: Yankee-Kun to Hakujou Garu (Jdrama. A refreshing concept of how a blind girl and a gangster falls in love. Their interactions are just SO CUTE & plus points on raising awareness about blind people’s perspective.)
• More than Blue the series (Taiwanese Drama, mentioned it before above, I’m a sucker for star-crossed lovers trope. Very tearjerking yet heart-warming with its topic about family.)

• Rurouni Kenshin series (Japanese Movie series, wanted to include this one as well, not just BLs. I like the action and fighting sequences, plus there’s slight romance to it so....)

• Happiness (still ongoing but since I have mentioned many romantic ones, I wanted to include this drama because I also love thrillers & apocalypse genres. They have a slight romance for ML&FL but it’s not the main focus of the drama.)

23. Favorite supportive mother of 2021

• Ida's mother, Kieta Hatsukoi (when she showed her phone lockscreen HAHA YAS)

25. Favourite Side Couple of 2021

• DueanMeen, Fish Upon the Sky (Thai BL. As long as Neo’s in it it will definitely be funny LOL)
• LeYanHaoDu, The Long ballad (Chinese drama, more interesting than main couple.)

• InkPa, Bad Buddy (hopefully P’aof will give it to us, FINGERS-CROSSED!)

• NOT ME (Thai BL drama that’s gonna air in December soon & OffGun is returning back to screen so I’m SUPER EXCITED!)

28. Hottest actor of 2021 (Discovered recently)

• Yokohama Ryusei (in Cursed in Love Jdrama)
• Ohm Pawat (Thai. Watched him in previously in a few dramas acting as a side character, didn’t really pay attention to him. After Bad Buddy, his acting improved so much & ofc, became hotter!)
• Nanon Korapat (in Bad Buddy Thai BL drama)
• Pond Narawit (In Fish Upon the Sky Thai BL drama)
• Lee Do Hyun (in Youth of May Kdrama)

29. Hottest actress of 2021

• Kitty Chicha (in Girl from Nowhere Thai drama)
• Jung Ho Yeon (in Squid Games KDrama. I was so excited as I knew her from when she was just a runway model. So proud of her first super successful drama!)
• Go Min Si (in Youth of May Korean Drama)
• Han So Hee (in My Name Korean Drama)

• Pi & Duean (in Fish Upon the Sky Thai BL Drama)
• AJ & JJ (in Gifted: Graduation Thai drama. I still cannot tell who is who.....)

• More than Blue Taiwanese series ( will never make me feel the same if I rewatch it as I alr know how it ends....)

1. Least favourite overall series of 2021

• No Boundary Season 2 (Chinese Drama, there was no need for a 2nd season TBH)

2. Least top 5 series of 2021

• Unrequited Love 2021 (Chinese Drama, I don’t like the FL character and how the relationship developed.)
• Hello Mr. Gu (Chinese Drama, the first few episodes were okay, I could put up with it, but the more I watched, the more I didn’t like the ML & FL’s character, dropped it in the end…)
• My little Happiness (Chinese drama, I’m sorry but I don’t like the ML’s character...)
• Love Crossed (Chinese drama, I kinda forgot why I didn’t like it but it had something to do with the ML character…..again. Maybe also the FL too...and the weird story plot???)
• Crush (Chinese drama….again LOL. At first before the ML & FL dated, it was pretty okay….then Idk what happened cause suddenly the ML was super childish and overbearing, the FL became immature & unreasonable as well. The reason for breaking up & their behaviour during that break didn’t sit right with me so I just dropped it after the episode where they fought.)

3. Least favourite Thai series of 2021

• Let’s fight ghost (Honestly watched it for Saint, but idk, the chemistry between him and the FL just wasn’t there IMO…could have been executed better.)

6. Least favourite Japanese series of 2021

• Mairunovich (I didn’t like the FL’s character and how in every episode she just liked a new guy. When it was nearing the last episode where the FL was gonna get tgt with the ML….the feelings didn’t seem right to me, it felt too sudden.)

7. Least favourite Korean series of 2021

• Lovers of the Red Sky (Kdrama. At first, it was interesting, but then it became very cringey. The relationship between the FL & ML was cute when they were young and when they found each other. BUT when they started dating it became very cringey. I like when ML sacrifice their life for FL tropes…but not to this extend. It was so tiring to see them trying to sacrifice themselves every chance they get. The visual effects and missing plot holes were also not helping LMAO. I finished it, but it didn’t leave me satisfied.)

15. Least favourite trope of 2021

• Disapproving & Overbearing parents (I’m looking at you Ep.6 Bad Buddy Pran’s mom, hopefully, you will change for the better lol.)
• Best friend turned into Enemies (especially when the reason for the conflict was a very small matter that can be solved easily but it’s dramaland so)
• Cinderella story (if I see one more FL covered in pimples and big glasses & they are considered ugly….you're done… you're done.)
• Rich ML chasing after Poor FL. (if executed poorly. It can make the ML seem overbearing and the FL very stupid. Especially when the FL leaves the ML for stupid small reasons.) 
• Age gap, where younger is chasing the older (not for me, sorry.)
• Teacher-Student Relationship (as I said above^)
• Incest (Idk why is there even this trope)

16. Series you were excited about but was poorly executed

• Lovers of the Red Sky (Kdrama. Excited because of Kim Yoo Jung and Ahn Hyo Seop but well, as I said it above..)
• Please feel at ease Mr. Ling (Chinese drama. Again, the ML character was kinda overbearing, didn't really respect the FL's decisions IMO, and the typical annoying SFL. The SML is the FL's half-brother too.......)
• The Blessed girl (Cdrama. Disappointing.)
• River where the moon rises (Kdrama. Was planning to start watching, but after I read the reviews and then the incident with Park Ji Soo happened, I decided not to watch it… 👀)
• Horimiya. (Jdrama. I LOVED the anime and was excited but the live action didn’t seem as fun or interesting. I guess some animes should just remain as animes..😪)
• Tonhon Chonlatee (Thai BL drama. It aired from late Nov 2020 to early Jan 2021 and I remember I was SUPER excited cause it was Khaotung’s first BL! But then I watched it and was uncomfortable with Pod’s character… I hope they do Khaotung better with The Eclipse, same with Pod 😞😤.)

• Actress Cheng Xiao (In World of Fantasy, I could not even feel the chemistry between her & the ML. In Falling into your smile, although her crying scenes were okay, her face in the rest of the drama was very stiff, just her enlaring her eyes and looking nonchalant IMO....)

• BirdyJiaHan, Your Name Engraved Herein (Taiwanese BL drama. Although it is 2020 drama, I am still thinking about it...)
• K&Cream, More than Blue the series (Taiwanese drama, lots of could have beens in a sad way....)
• QingMingBoya, The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity (I swear, their chemistry and tension ><)

4. BL couple you would’ve liked to see

• NanonChimon. (I think it’s every GMMTV BL fan wish to see them act together in a BL series HAHA)

5. GL couple you would’ve liked to see

• InkPa, Bad Buddy (FINGERSCROSSED!!)
• NannoYuri, Girl from Nowhere S2 (Honestly I thought they were gonna make them a power couple and help each other cause the tension between both of them was fire.  But Yuri just HAD to be a bad person sigh…)

~ Anticipations for 2022 ~

1. Most anticipated overall series of 2022

• The Romance of Tiger and Rose 2 (Chinese drama. I hope they execute it WELL and not change the Main leads!)
• Alice in Borderland 2 (Jdrama. More Tao and Kento moments please! )

2. Most anticipated Thai series of 2022

• Never Let Me Go (PondPhuwin back again!! This time in like a mafia trope! Based on the trailer, I expect there will be much tension and action~)
• Vice Versa (Jimmy’s BL debut! With Nanon & Ohm acting the main leads in a different body?! *screaming in Raikantopeni* )
• Enchanté (Another BL series. Can’t wait to see BookForce chemistry especially after GMMTV’s SafeHouse.)
• Moonlight Chicken (Kob Khun Ka GMMTV & P'aof for giving us another EarthMix BL series!!)
• Cupid's Last Wish (Double kill, another EarthMix BL Series??? Say no more. Also interesting that Earth's character can see Mix's character in another body...)
• My School President (BL series. Hopefully they execute it well and make it more interesting. So far from the trailer, it seems like a similar situation as Tine & Sarawat from the Thai BL Together the series. Just that it is not one chasing the other for a fake boyfriend, but it is one pleasing the other for a music club.)
• Star & Sky: Star in my Mind | Sky in your Heart (BL series. Joong is back in another BL series after awhile & Mek is having his BL debut with a main role! Star in my Mind seems like the typical secret first love reunited trope. Hope it will be more interesting than it seems. Sky in your heart reminds me of A Tale of Thousand Stars.)
• The Eclipse (FirstKhaotung is a BL pair I didn’t expect but am very excited to see how it plays out.)
• My Engineer 2 (BL series. Hoping it comes out in 2022, I miss RamKing!)
• My Only 12% (BL series. SantaEarth did well in 7 Project Ep.1, so I’m excited to see more of their chemistry. Their friendship off-screen is also really cute!)
• CutiePie (BL series. Zee is back again and this time with new actor New. Interesting concept as I rarely see marriage arrangements where both are guys.)
• Between Us (BL series. They better give it to us SOON. Stop teasing us and playing hard-to-get with a few min teaser episodes!!)
• You Fight, I Love (Love's first main role! From the trailer it seems okay but that one part where Joss was jealous about her male friend....hope it is not those typical immature jealousy trope ><)
• Dirty Laundry (Nanon acting in a comedy, Film's first main role! P'Jennie & Pond is in it too so i'm excited!)
• Oh! My Sunshine Night! (BL series. OhmFluke back again!! Can't wait!! T^T)

• HiStory 3: Make our days count 2 (BL series. PLEASE HAVE HAPPY ENDING!)
• We best love season 3 (BL series. Hope it comes out in 2022, I am interested in ShouYi & ZhenXuan’s story)

6. Most anticipated Japanese series of 2022

• Alice in Borderland 2 (like I said, MORE TAO & KENTO YAS)
• Kei×Yaku: Abunai Aibou (Action & Mystery & Thriller BL series? Plus Police x Yakuza?? COUNT ME IN!)

9. Most anticipated new actress of 2022

• Tu Tontawan (in 2022 F4 Thailand & 10 years ticket, her acting seems pretty good. Plus, she's so prettyyy.)

10. Most anticipated vet actor of 2022 

• Off Jumpol (comes hand in hand with Gun)
• Gun Attaphan (comes hand in hand with Off)
• Zhao Lu Si, Rosy (my historical queeeen!)

13. Most Anticipated Side Couple in 2022

• NeoLouis, The Eclipse (BL series. DueanMeen in Parallel universe, Neo seems less comedic in the trailer so I’m even more intrigued.)

• BrightTu (F4 Thai drama version. I wanna see if Bright has improved his acting now that he is acting as hetero.)

1. A couple that should’ve/could’ve been - Yu Zhen & Shi Lei (Be Loved in House) [I don't know what happened, but I wanted to see this couple more]
2. One series where you would change the actors - Boat Tara Tipa (Golden Blood) 
3. One series you would change the plot, or make it better - Don't Say No (starting the series when they are already dating is not interesting at all)

Fish Upon the Sky: just a disappointment from the production to the plot to the acting

2gether: the comedy was there but the romance was underwhelming, i love BrightWin but the chemistry was lacking

Don't Say No: messy plot but JaFirst carried with their chemistry

My Sweet Dear: boring, that's all i have to say

What You Would've Changed

A Tale of Thousand Stars: disappointing character development from Phupha :( i felt betrayed by Phupha's hypocrisy, it broke my heart to see Tian being treated the way he was treated by Phupha... i would've changed the whole writing of his character from ep 8 and onward

I Promised You the Moon: now this might be an unpopular opinion but Oh Aew should've never gotten back together with Teh. if i were to rewrite the ending, i would've made them meet again at least 3+ years in the future and given them an open ambiguous ending. Oh Aew deserved better than a cheater anyway

Be Loved in House: I Do: more focus should've been placed on the main couple, would've loved to see more cute scenes between them :(

Anticipations for 2022

Moonlight Chicken & Cupid's Last Wish: it's EarthMix! you know i gotta tune in

KinnPorsche: a mafia plot is always sexy

Never Let Me Go: i'm willing to give PondPhuwin a second try bc (1) the actors are cute (2) it's a mafia plot

Cutie Pie: ZeeNew are just too cute

Vice Versa: this genre of drama usually isn't my favourite but the trailer looked so interesting

Hopes for the Future

A spin-off for Aey & Mhok from Lovely Writer (their story felt incomplete, especially after watching the special episode)
