Joon-sang moves to a new high school in search for his biological father. Yu-jin and Sang-hyuk are close childhood friends, although Sang-hyuk wants to be more than a friend, Yu-jin sees him as a brother. On a trip together with other high school mates, Oh Chelin , Jin-suk and Yong-kuk , Yu-jin is saved after an accident by Joon-sang. They become close and she opens up his cold heart. However, circumstances and read morefate dictate that their love will never be. He abruptly disappears from their lives.
Ten years later, the old High School buddies gather to celebrate Yu-jin and Sang-hyuk's soon-to-be wedding. Yu-jin, who was deeply in love with Joon-sang, still has a fire in her heart for him. But at the party, Oh Chelin's new boyfriend arrives, who appears the same as Joon-sang.

If I had to choose one drama starring Bae Yong Jun, I'd probaly pick up 'Winter Sonata'. The story is quite nostalgic and has very romantic scenes. I don't like specially the actress for the main role but it has the stellar appearance of the deceased Park Yong Ha (God keep in his glory). If you like romantic love stories you musn't miss this one. My favourite track from the Ost: 'My memory'

Winter Sonata is a beautiful, nostalgic and addictive romantic melodrama.
The first few episodes are really adorable, love the characters of both the leads, I like them both as actors.
Then from the middle to the end (even though its still beautiful) the story drags a lot. The pace is really really slow and situations repeat themselves one way or the other to the point that you have to ff to get read more on with it.
But for anyone who likes a romantic melodrama, this is not to be missed. I have already watched it twice and probably will next time too when I need to watch a sad and romantic story with a nice ending.
Mind you all the cliches are there, the dreaded love triangle, terminal illness, birth secrets and many more. But still its a beautiful watch.

Same female lead. the 'memory loss' thing instead on the female its on the male this time. the going back and forth with 2 guys and the guy who was lost his memory was presumed dead and ofc not. these 2 dramas have quite alot of similarites, stairway to heaven was more of a tearjerker but i cried a hell load watching winter sonata as well...
and u'll never forget ur 1st love~

Although Winter Sonata is a kdrama, both dramas caught my heart even though they are very cliche. The cliche parts were executed beautifully, and these two melodramas are some of the best I have ever watched. They're very romantic but they are both slow paced romances. Both dramas have great chemistry between the leads and the male leads are super handsome!

The soundtrack is so sad. Actually I watched it full on anime version. The drama version I only occasionally watched it.

i found it boring and the love story not believable.
the whole drama basically goes like this: two people sit somewhere and say „sorry“ to each other repeatedly while crying + bunch of cliches. the end.

wow, i usually don't like old dramas (barely bear new ones) but this one's daebak! Now i understand why they say this drama started hallyu wave. it's a complete melodrama desk reference! talk about fixing every single misunderstanding! every obstacle that could get in a couple's way (that i can think of, without making it action) is there. but still, calling it cliche is distasteful, 'cause there's a sense of originality to all its cliches to make it desirable for a rewatch. it's been a while since a romantic story made me think this long. and i'm not even a melodrama fan!

This is so overrated. Ridiculous things popping up every time they thought they could be together. Also so many coincidences was also ridiculous.

I must be in the wrong mindset ! .... ..... all the cliches are getting to me :( .....
..... and..... I am just not buying her devoted love to him after all these years .....
I simply dislike the kind of love w/out rhyme or reason.... they're in love b/c the writer says so ...... CLICHE !?!?!?!?!?

    The Good parts are :
    - Bae Yong Jun !!! (2nd time seeing him ...liked him more in "Untold Scandal")
    - Park Yong-Ha !!! (granted not as cute as in his later series - Still , Yeeaaayyy !!!)
    - Great Music !!!
    - Very nice clothes (specifically the 2 leads) - and fits the professions .... lots of monochromatic luxury fabrics w/ simple, elegant lines ...... ........ ....... none of those short shorts to work and w/ heals and in the middle of winter...etc...

Very very very Slow and Predictable .... nothing stands out except the list above .....
*** for old dramas full of cliches --->>> IMO , "Sad Love Song" was 10x better..... even "Stairway to Heaven" was more interesting.

hmm i at episode 4 and have to say its not bad! normally i dont like old dramas because funny hair style clothes no laptop or internet which is somehow awkward.most of them are bad quality because there arent good dvds from them or so.
the story is ok till now but if it comes that he isnt the guy from school then i would go completely nuts and would definetely not watch more of it.....

Ah JoongSang and Yujin give off very nice vibes. I love them together. BaeYongJun is adorable. Those two are my kind of a couple, they fit together and well very engaging to watch, it doesn't happen all that often for me. Moreover, the lead guy character is just a lovely, likeable character. The ending was sweet all in all and music fit the sentimental mood very well. But everything else aside from the main couple is not really so great, the second leads are awful and towards the end you have to have a high patience level to accept all the twists and angst.

People like to say romance drama's without any love triangles or main/2nd lead romances are clichés, I beg to differ, these loathsome love triangles and main / 2nd lead romances are the clichés. Winnie, thanks for letting me know. If the love triangles aren't that strong or forceful, by that I mean, the 2nd lead just doesn't know when to give up, I don't mind them so much. I just finished watching Love Actually, and both the 2nd lead male and female just wouldn't give up, even to the point of the main leads splitting up twice, that just sends me over the edge hopping, blood vessels popping, mad, no better yet, livid, and that's a HUGE understatement.

Filled with every known cliche and very frustrating to watch, Winter Sonata has now become a nolstalgic piece of drama which brings back fond memories of being my first Korean drama (only 20 months ago). Despite all the annoying things that went on I still found it totally romantic and I developed my first Korean actor crush on Bae Yong Jun. Maybe after watching Winter Sonata I had my fill of cliches because now I would avoid watching anything like it again.

This is full of generic cliches. How can you have two meet at the airport scenes? This drama is way too cliche and generic. I don't understand why its so popular. I pretty much had to skip through it because I was so bored. It was basically people crying and apologizing every episode with cliche misunderstandings and random things in the way of their relationship.
