I understand it's a work of fiction but it still made a little uncomfy.

This drama is really amazing

I really enjoyed this drama so much ,, it has a lot of emotions and good feelings about love ,, friendship and family all for the love of the country ,, yes it has some bad scenes not accurate or some bad acting performance from the male lead but that didn't ruin my experience of enjoying watching this drama
it was fast paced ,, it has good Bromance and it was really fun ride ,, I laughed ,, cried and loved all the characters
there are many stories told and all of them are very emotional in good way stories
why all the hate for the leads ,, I have no idea and this drama ranked four in china viewing chart for it's channel
it's also subbed to many languages officially

one of the best 2019 drama

I think people (including me) started expecting more of this drama because it was something new and never seen before. The promise of the story itself opened so many options about how the drama was going to unfold, and as I started theorizing, it kinda made me disappointed when they didn't happen. (this also happens to me when I watch crime dramas that hide their main criminal, I start expecting something that's just basically "my version of a story".)

Basically that's why I tried to minimize MY writing/interpretation of this drama and I just tried to watch the drama's version of events. that became harder when the drama started it's last chapter, mainly because I'm an overanalyzer and things were too clear that I even fell for the writer's trap at one point xD

IF I wrote this drama I would've done it differently, but that doesn't mean the original writer's version was bad. this also goes for the characters, but seeing the end made me accept that "this" danoh, "this" haru and "this" school were made for "this" story.

I don't want to make this review long, though this might be my longest review to date, and I don't want to add spoilers, so I'll try to summarize the next part ;)
the acting were really perfect for "this" story, I already knew most of these young actors, and I'll keep an eye out for their next projects ;)

for the OST, I have to say I really loved how each character had their own little theme song, I need to find A3's song and make it my ringtone xD

my rewatch values are either a 1 or 10, and now that I've seen the ending I really want to watch the drama with a different view point ;)

The whole plot sounds amazing. Three girls, who are desperately trying to become idols, witness a crime and become male idols to protect their identity. What doesn't seem funny and dramatic about that? The thing is though, the acting was just so corny and the way the story played out it was so unrealistic. None of the characters are particularly likeable. I love a good gender bender, but this was not one of them. I personally couldn't finish watching it. I gave up, I thought it was so bad. That doesn't mean you shouldn't give it a try, you might like it. I just didn't.

I wasn't a huge fan of Hana Kimi but I had high expectations of the Korean version but sadly I am left disappointed.

At least in Hana Kimi the girl had a feasible reason for wanting to come to the school (she felt responsible for causing Oguri Shun to get injured) so she comes to his school in Japan to help him get back into athletics. This part of the story was omitted from the Korean version, so there was no real reason for Jae Hee to come to Korea other than she had a schoolgirl crush on Tae Joon, this was a totally lame and flawed concept. If that was the case most school girls would track down their idols & stalk them merrily to their hearts content. We all have people we admire or look up to but we don’t think the logical step is to insinuate ourselves into their lives by any method possible.

The bulk of the drama had no real story, nothing really happened. Also there wasn't much chemistry between the main leads, it all seemed forced and awkward, such a shame when there was so much potential.

I disliked the last episode I found Jae Hee's actions lacking in common sense, even for a Kdrama heroine, I don't want to say why in case of spoilers. Why do the writer's make the heroines vapid and selfish?

Also despite the huge deception there appear to be no repercussions...ridiculous. But this is Kdramas after all....anything goes :D

Can I get a woot woot? Best drama in 2013 (my opinion)!!!!
I was actually in Korea last summer when this drama was airing on TV, and let me tell you, it was popular. Every time I turn on the TV, this drama was on, and everywhere I go, people were talking about it (including my hair dresser ahjumah that was watching the drama the whole time doing my 5 hour perm). I only have limited korean abilities, and with all the lawyer jargons and complex plot, I didn't understand it very well, but even then, I was hooked!!! When I came back to the states I made it my priority to watch this drama, with ENGLISH subs!!! :) Now lets break this down one by one.

The storyline was very very great! It had a lot of depth, humor, love, warmth, suspense, and just about everything you would want in a drama. I would say I haven't seen such a deep and meaningful and loving drama in such a long time. It made me cry, it made me laugh, and every time I was finished with an episode, I couldn't wait until the next week to come!!!!

The characters had great chemistry together, although I thought the boy was very stiff at times, but who cares, he's darn cute (right girls?). I fell in love with the main actress for her sass and wittiness. I tried watching her other dramas, but can't bring myself to like her as much as I do in this drama.

One last thing I would like to add is the MUSIC, omg I am in love with the soundtrack!!! It would sell great as an album itself, I know I'm sold :)

One of the best dramas in Cdramaland

If you are willing to invest your time in watching a drama will remain in your memory for the next decade and beyond, one that could possibly change your life (for the better), this could be it.

Key Features of this drama:

1. Unique storyline of a young, smart, fearless, multi-talented Tang Princess falling in love with a romantic grassland General from the Eastern Turk. She will start off wanting to seek revenge for the killing of her parents, but will end up understanding it is more important to put aside self-interest and see the greater good of her people and her nation.

2. Every character was supremely well portrayed by the respective actors/actresses. The beautiful OSTs, and background music will add to arouse the emotion that the director intended, whether it is sadness, anger, regret or joy. You will not only feel those emotions through the actors/actresses' facial expressions, but also hear it through those songs and background music.

3. Set during the time of the Tang dynasty, it moves almost at the 21st century speed. There are very few moments of dullness, redundant dialogue, silly misunderstanding, or needless charactors added to prolong a series. The cast spoke at a very even pace. Not too fast, as if we are watching in the fast forward mode; or too slow to put us to sleep.

4. Choreography. Whilst many of the live battle scenes were replaced by animation, it was well compensated by the excellent choreography of the many one-to-one fight scenes. They are an excellent feast for the eyes that will keep you captivated.

5. CGI. I find some of the CGIs used in this drama rather amazing. Especially all those flying arrows. And there were lots of flying arrows used in this drama, much more than those daggers in House of Flying Daggers (Zhang Ziyi, 2014). If you like those flying daggers there, you will love the flying arrows in The Long Ballad.

6. Iconic scenes. This drama has countless iconic scenes that will remain in your memory for years. Watch it, and you will know what I mean.

7. Excellent screen chemistry. Especially for the first two couples. Some might add, even for the 3rd and 4th couple. This was largely achieved through good acting, rather than kissing or bathtub or bedroom scenes. There was one or two well executed kisses, but by and large, magical connections between actors and actresses were achieved through tender holding of hands, sweet forehead kisses, gentle hugs, subtle eye-connections, large scribbling of name and gentle caressing of hairpin which conveyed just how much one party misses the presence of the other.

8. Life Lessons. The hidden gems of this drama series are the many life lessons one can learn through the adventures and character development of the two princesses. Li Changge sought to avenge her parents, seemingly murdered by her uncle. You read this in the synopsis. By the time the series ended, you will see her learning to forgive; even the person who killed her biological father. In the process, she found healing and closure in her relationship with her uncle. She also learned to forgive two other characters who were constantly trying to hunt her down.

Besides forgiveness, you will find many other important life lessons conveyed through this drama. Lessons of mutual trust and respect between healthy mature loving partners; making personal sacrifices for the greater good of a nation; finding ways to acheive peace instead of resorting to violence to settle conflict and differences. The character Li Changge herself shows us the importance of being brave and courageous, willing to take calculated risks, willing to be humble and learn from one's mistakes. From Leyan, the 2nd female lead, the importance for leaders to get down to the ground, see and feel the needs of the people you lead. Listen to them. Empathise with them.

There you are. I hope this review motivates you to invest your time in watching this excellent drama, and be blessed.

MA—STER—PIE—CE!!

???Rating: 9.7/10 ???
The story Quote: “To wish for life when you love them and death when you hate them. Wishing them to live while wishing them to die. That is what it means to be captivated.”

Preview:

The view shows Joseon during the Qing occupation. The Qing maintain strict order and rule with a strong hand, holding Korean hostages in their capital. One of them is Yi In (loyal to his brother (the king), the Grand Prince). After some time, the prince returns to his homeland, but no one welcomes him with open arms; he is treated as a spy and a traitor. He meets an unbeatable baduk player (which he himself likes to play).

Opinion:

I have grown very fond of this series. I'm so sad that I've already finished it. I started watching it on the 3rd of February and waited impatiently every weekend thinking "Do I have to wait much longer?". Lots of twists and turns. The ending of probably every or most of the episodes was gripping to the point where I wished I had started watching it after all the episodes were published. I was hoping for a sad ending. I was hoping for a tragic, impossible love. I was hoping for an unhappy break-up. What I got was everything. The last episode showed their momentary carefreeness, for one day they were a couple, a real couple. "Remember, you are my gidaeryong."Admittedly the ending didn't have anything special about it, it was a bit tedious, a bit touching. I think there was a way not to bore the audience, if only they had made it a dramatic ending.... let's not focus on that , let's move on to the cast

Soundtracks. Here a huge round of applause in my opinion especially to TAEIL for "Wave". This chorus triggered all the emotions, a feeling that is hard to describe.

Jo Jung Suk, do I need to add anything here? In every feed where I mentioned something about "Captivating the King" there was a sentence admiring his acting, his glassy eyes, his whispers, his ear-splitting scream.... everything was extremely perfectly great! The character of King Joseon himself was great, admittedly he may have actually (at the beginning) been sitting on the baduk too much. You could see that power changes a person. He started as a loyal subject of his brother and lasted later as a king who nevertheless has to defend the "crown". Still, I think he ruled fairly enough, not including Mongwoo and her friends. I really liked how he wanted to defend Hee-Soo and kept her with him.

Shin Sae Kyeong, I really liked this actress in "Rookie Historian...", but here, something didn't play for me about her. I had the impression that sometimes her eyes were running away somewhere else? I don't know. I loved her moments of tenderness and her relationship with the king, but in my opinion, too many scenes where she cried were shown. It's not down to the actress anymore, but this concept, this revenge plan, was it literally killing the king? My expectations were much higher.

Kim Myungha, really wasn't a very necessary character. Maybe she was supposed to fill in some space, going from being an unimportant character to becoming a bit more important. The script did not give room for Lee Shin Young to show off. I didn't really grow close to this character, I didn't really feel his importance (although I especially liked how he aroused the king's jealousy at first).

Park Ye Young as Lady Dong, I wasn't expecting much from the court lady, I thought she would be a budget character to play 'background', but I was really surprised. What I remember most was the vein that popped out on her forehead, it made a big "wow" on me. After that, I only appreciated her more and more. Her trembling, her look, her eyes... I really enjoyed her acting, I'm hoping for more new series with her.

Choi Dae Hoon as the earlier Joseon king was a bit annoying in my opinion. Otherwise, I have nothing against him as a character, but the fact that he suddenly spurned, ignored his brother, worrying only about power, about the crown, even worried that she was his spy for Qing, I understand that no one can be trusted in the court, but it bothered me a bit.

Ha Seo Yoon as the queen spouse Oh. I liked her a lot. I don't know why, but I was happy to see her working with gidaeryong. It made me sad to see her so ill, so I think she played the role well. Plus her relationship with Prince Munseong, I really liked that she treated him like a son even though he wasn't one. Her request to establish the Prince as the heir to the throne, I cried as she slowly died.

Choi Ye Chan as Prince Munseong. CHILDREN CAN ACT SO WELL?! In my opinion, he conveyed emotions perfectly, I didn't feel he was an inexperienced actor. I would like to watch his progress, there is a bright future ahead of him.

Yang Kyung Won as Hyun Bo. Is his punishment really not a joke? Exile from the capital? Seriously? For contributing to the deaths of people, aiding in treason? I remembered his acting from "...Samdal-ri", so my expectations were equal to his skills. He didnt shine, he didnt disappoint.

✅️ twists and turns
✅️ the ending of each episode keeps you in suspense
✅️ OST ("Wave")
✅️ Jo Jung Suk is 10/10, his voice, acting, looks, slay queen ??
✅️ Park Ye Young's acting, her trembling, her eyes.... everything is so perfect..
✅️ Queen Oh & Prince Munseong's relationship

❌️ Mongwoo's weak revenge
❌️ Kim myung-ha is a bit useless

+ I would have preferred that, after this three-year hiatus, King pretended he didn't know she was a woman in order to protect her, or that he knew her plan at all and let her carry it out because he loves her (someone wrote this under my feed and I very much agree).

Writing this made me feel like a film critic, this is the first time I'm writing an opinion... a bit lacking in order and composition, chaotically written.. but i hope someone ever reads this at least to some extent ??

Disappointing.

I may be in the minority, or not. But this show was such a huge letdown for me. They used "Family" so much in the drama, but they made it too comedic and not really something to look forward to watching. The action drama and storyline of the series could've been its saving grace, but the story had so many plot holes it was such a headache to watch and appreciate. While the plot twist with Jang Nara's history seemed like the saving grace of the drama, it wasn't enough. Not only were the first episodes very dragging, but also lacked chemistry between the leads and the family members- the interactions shown all seemed very fake and cringey. Most especially the husband and wife interactions. It's so bland. The way I see it, they portrayed it like they're just staying together for the sake of being like a family... The attitude of the male lead towards the beginning was also such a red flag.

Honestly, I was only able to finish the series with the hope that it'll turn better but it didn't. Until the end, the plotholes just thickened and nothing still made sense.

Reasons why this show disappointed me in a way:

The first episode of the show was confusing because there were too many characters mentioned and you can't tell instantly what the plot is. Later on, as the episodes progressed, it created a big impact on me. I thought that this show was worth looking forward to because of how Vincenzo executes all of his plans. Adding to the fact that the main villain hasn't been revealed yet, the suspense really stayed in me. The people in Geumga plaza had too much screen time and their humor is really not up to my liking. Each episode should not be 1 hour and 20 minutes long, they kept adding scenes to the people in the plaza which really did not contribute much to the plot. When the main villain was revealed, I really had this expectation that he would act for himself. But that only happened in episode 20. He kept clinging to Wusang, he makes them do the dirty work for him and what's even funnier is that he kept sending bad men to pursue Vincenzo and all of them were easily beaten because it took them a while to fire their gun or attack him instantly? There were a lot of plot armor which do not seem realistic. He was also overly praised for being a consigliere. They created this suspense at the beginning and it vanished when they started adding some random scenes from side characters. Vincenzo also admitted that he could have taken down Hanseok at the beginning but didn't because he wanted to prolong their struggle.I'm giving it a score of 6.5 because Song Joong Ki and Jeon Yeobeen are great actors and their chemistry is great. The plot is so-so.

Over hyped Drama... ┐( ˘_˘)┌

Sorry I'm NOT sorry !

I had very big expectation for this Drama. I am very disappointed.

It’s unbearable to see female lead be so rude to her ex when she’s the one who broke his heart.I know there’s more info that revealed about her life but I can’t imagine male lead really wanting to be with someone who lied and broke his heart and never apologized. No interest in their romance.

And when I tried to watch it till the end..
I was just speechless, how could they concluded at last that whatever male lead achieved was all just waste ? They bragged about how he is famous artist , giving live demo for such a great building, his paintings are very admirable , a celebrity is fan of his work & his paintings are EXPENSIVE and of soo much value . Then at last they're showing that someone told him that his paintings are nothing but "JUST EMPTY ", A child who's Trapped in his own world ? And they're showing that whatever he did was all meant nothing to him ? ( Okay... they're trying to show us , he didn't know what he likes, what he wants to do in his life and he was just doing it without any meaning..does that make sense? NO !!
As an art lover myself I strongly believe that they just ruined the half meaning of this drama by showing this kind of story!
I was trying to complete this boring drama because of their boring romance, where I feel no emotions but at last I'm watching this ?
I'm just Disappointed

At last ...This story so far has no pull so they are manufacturing it by slicing and dicing the scenes and jumbling them so the audience cannot figure out what's going on.
The more I think of it, it is becoming more and more frustrating.

God knows why people are loving this drama ! There are more good dramas related to this kind of content.

It was by no means perfect, but this was a feel good drama and happy pill for me. I mainly loved this for the wholesome work environment. It was entirely unrealistic, but I needed a break from all the negativity in dramas. That's not to say this was void of negativity. You have Kwon Min Woo who serves as the closest thing to an antagonist. And of course you have the evildoers in all of those cases too. I'm a sucker for some character growth, so I really loved seeing Woo Young Woo grow as a person and lawyer.

Do NOT watch this show if you're expecting an accurate representation of someone on the spectrum. I feel like some things were exaggerated or misrepresented. However, the writers do get some things right. This drama brought up a lot of discussion on the subject matter, especially in countries where people don't have much knowledge about ASD. Some viewers made the extra effort to do some research and this is a big plus, but don't watch this expecting it to be accurate. The writers wanted a story to be different and they got one.

Do NOT watch this solely for the cases. I don't know how to describe them. They were a bit ridiculous, but outcomes/twists were entertaining? They seemed impossible to win, but somehow the team got lucky. Watching this law drama as a foreigner/outsider was a bit weird because I would think of a law in my country and wonder, "They don't already have a law about this?" and "How is this even legal?" But again, this is not my country so I cannot judge or make conclusions based on South Korea's laws. The cases from the first half were more interesting than the second. Then the show starts to go downhill again a bit. You can tell the writers got a bit lazy. Also, news of a 2nd season was announced so maybe they're holding out on stuff. Overall I enjoyed this as a workplace drama, where a newbie joins the workforce and makes a considerable amount growth by the end.

Chen Fei Yu’s face now triggers my fight or flight response (pros: chemistry, cons: writing)

I love how this drama gave us the fattest load of potential I’ve seen from cdramas in awhile only for it to sadly explode in our faces. I was (rightly) excited for Lighter & Princess because of Chen Fei Yu, but the writing definitely does not match up to the talents of the cast.

STORY
This drama can best be described as a mix between your classic college rom com and a business revenge drama. I didn’t have much of a problem with the plot, but if you’re looking for a masterpiece, you should stop thinking about this drama, period. It has all the markings of your classic annoying cdrama—uselessly over-the-top events, dumb misunderstandings, toxicity, and a neat ending that doesn’t make sense at all.

What I really took issue with was how the characters were written. I don’t know who thought it was a good idea to make the leads (and the side characters) some of the most insufferable, selfish, unaware people I’ve ever seen. I personally think I’m someone who easily forgives the plot, but a horribly cliche story paired with the most annoying characters known to man is not a good combo.

Li Xun is your usual cold, unemotional genius, but he’s also incredibly rude, overly arrogant, possesses an insane superiority complex, and never changes. Zhu Yun is basically his puppy-eyed sidekick who cannot seem to think for herself. I think this drama would’ve been 300% more enjoyable if these two actually realized they weren’t the center of this world.

ACTING
And what pains me even more is that the acting was actually pretty good. Chen Fei Yu actually brings emotionally subtlety to his cold ML character, a trope that is usually rife with stiff and personality-less acting. I liked the aloof, seemingly-apathetic nature Chen Fei Yu gave Li Xun. It was so natural that it felt like he was the character, so much so that his face now triggers my fight or flight response (hence the review title) since my brain equates Chen Fei Yu to Li Xun and I have come to despise Li Xun xD.

Zhang Jing Yi as Zhu Yun wasn’t half bad either. She captured pretty well Zhu Yun’s childlike innocence and stubborn determination. But I felt like she could have been far more emotive, and also it seems as though she has no idea what to do with her body while acting. She stands still with her arms hanging by her sides 97% of the time.

The chemistry between Chen Fei Yu and Zhang Jing Yi was the sparks-flying type, though. Great bantering, cute scenes, and some nice cuddling scenes. I enjoyed it thoroughly before the drama went down the drain.

MUSIC
I loved the soundtrack to this show. From Zhou Shen’s dramatic and heartfelt ballad to punk rock and band covers—the music in this drama were honestly all bops, especially the songs Ren Di’s band covered. Plus the Pu Shu songs they included? Chef’s kiss. Really managed to capture the hopeful, young sadness that this drama was going for that the writing didn’t succeed in conveying.

REWATCH VALUE
BYE, there’s no way I’m putting myself through this pain again. Maybe the first half, though. Maybe.

I find it distasteful to base a story on an actual issue. SOTUS is an incorrigible act of violation of a person's personal rights. Many have died going through it. I just feel sad that many young thais or even university students anywhere have to go through hazing. On that fact, I just do not understand why there are so many viewers who are not voicing this out.

However, to be subjective, the storyline is strong and the acting is on par. I am just worried that the romance that blooms out of SOTUS will make SOTUS an applicable and allowable act. Maybe they should think of changing the name for the second season and not make SOTUS as the frontal point of the series anymore. It would be good if they have a stronger anti-SOTUS storyline for the second series.

Let's remember those who fell by the act of SOTUS everywhere and May Karma return to all that have caused and still doing it.

perfect FL casting, horrible actress for a horrible role !

the writing is so good up until episode 8. episode 4 is so amazing it was so unexpected, i felt it defied every saeguk trope and for that I was hooked (killing the queen father). I also feel like the romance/romantic tensions made the stupid writing less obvious in the beginning because her revenge plot was dumb from the begining. But after he finds out her real gender the writing goes to hell so fast it made me laugh. There where so many weird homophobic comment about how the heterosexual romance needed to start but jokes on them once he found her out the romantic/sexual tension completely left the drama as well. after that all he wanted was to protect her and she wanted to hurt him. no chemistry at all between them.

episode 8 is so disappointing why did he have to find out so quick and like this too. I needed a kiss or a true/explicit confession of love before he found out. It always feel a little cowardy from the writer to put all this romantic attraction and tension but only make them act on it when its 100% sure its heterosexual ! oh the King's Affection you will always be superior for that !!! they even put that little scene with his soldier to make sure we know that he is NOT gay he just like the femboy because he is a girl hihi ????
I guess I'm going to have to be satisfied with the kings confession under the rain that was really nice.
the acting at the end of ep 8 by JJS is insane tho !!! all his micro expression with his eyes blew me away.

the worst thing about the drama is by far Shin Sae Kyeong/Kang Hee Soo both respectively. All SSK knew how to do was have watery eyes and bite her lip, avoiding eye contact and acting scared. Her acting was so stiff so bad and absolutely not believable as a man. Also why did she have lipgloss on ? Now Hee Soo was horribly written, I don't think she made one good decision the whole drama. Annoying from the start and then annoying things about her just start pilling on. And then at the end she ask to go to pekin was the last straw. after all the king did for her she's like I kinda want to see my father and idc about you. just pissed me off. would've been happy with an ending where she dies ???.

I may have watched a different ending because at no point do they explicitly say that mongwoo will stay in Joseon with the king. its a very weird open ending and I don't like that. Horrible ending where nothing happens and the creators dont know what to do. the uncle acting was great tho, made me feel bad for him. JJS the only saving grace of this mess.

So basically there was no romance, no cool fights only intellectual mind game like baduk, the whole drama rest on them but they weren't even that crazy complicated or cool which made the drama boring. To put simply the writers we're not good enough. waste of time and super disappointing.
