I made a vow to write a review immediately after the show ended and believe me when I say the emotions are still raw. Where do I even start? Eternal Love is such a compelling and beautiful piece I don't think I can find the exact words to describe it.

The story is brilliant in itself and I am honestly sure it did the book justice. I think if you're watching this read more without reading the book beforehand, you would love the show a lot more because you're watching without expectations plus either way, Eternal Love will blow you away (even if you're not a fantasy/xianxia/historical genre kind of person) Also, If you like The Journey of Flower, you will love this without a doubt.

Everything, every single thing is so stunning from the costumes, to the set and the cinematography. And the most beautiful part is, of course, their love story. The different clans coming together and all the magical elements and all are very interesting. I won't delve into the story too much because its pretty complicated but fear not, you will never be bored of it for a second.

The acting was spectacular. Yang Mi did a fantastic job as always. Although it was my first time watching Mark Chao, his character as either Mo Yuan or Ye Hua is so easily to fall in love with because he is that good at acting. Chemistry was flawless. A transparent love was beautifully portrayed; you could feel their love and pain and share their happiness. Kiss scenes are very good too. They're not exactly rough but tender and deep? I honestly did not expect so many kiss scenes because I was quite disappointed with the lack of intimacy in The Journey of Flower but you're blessed here :')

Every other character was very likeable having their own unique personalities. The other side characters and love stories are also super sweet especially Dong Hua's and Feng Jui's.

It seems like everything about the drama is perfect even its music is so apt. The entire OST is so enchanting played at right timings. The duet is so haunting which really gives Bai Qian & Ye Hua moments that goosebumps. So, so good.

The only problem I have (not with the drama) is that I hate misunderstandings that cause conflicts in a relationship which my heart cannot handle. Ye Hua and Bai Qian's relationship has many 'tragedies' that can really break your heart because they've been through so many tribulations caused by some side bitches but in the end, everything for this drama is worth it.

Rewatch it? Definitely. No qualms about it.

This is truly a masterpiece and I can safely say Eternal Love is my favourite C-Drama.

Probably the first time a drama of this length has me thoroughly enthusiastic from beginning to end. More rare is the case of a drama adaptation not only breathing life to its book, but surpasses the original work in every aspect. The challenge is to stop oneself from the binge to see how this game of fate, love, misunderstanding and tragedy takes three 'lifetimes' to resolve. Even if fantasy is not one's read more cup of tea, the love/romance here is one everyone can enjoy

*Story (10/10)
This drama has done a wondrous job keeping faithful to the original story while incorporating parts of its spinoff "The Pillow Book" about the secondary lead pairing. The Chinese title of this drama is "Three Lives Three Worlds Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms" and like its name suggests, tells the story of Ye Hua and Bai Qian - gods who are separated yet bounded by fate to find each other in their lives again throughout the course of three lifetimes/arcs, creating a memorable journey of emotional highs and lows balanced with good action and drama. Though it has 58 episodes, it is filled with plots to leave one consistently guessing what the next development is from beginning to end. Just as one score settles, another rises.

Characters are fleshed out, and everyone has their own story. Alhough the focus is on the main couple, viewers can also enjoy other secondary characters and their relationships and how it all intertwines.

*Acting/Cast: (9/10)
Yang Mi's Bai Qian may be the protagonist, but Mark Chao is the highlight. To express so much with so little is what Mark does wonderfully, and his ability to portray two similar characters (Ye Hua & Mo Yuan) so differently with their set of own characteristics, mannerisms and reactions is impressive. As for Yang Mi overall she did well portraying the different personalities of her characters - from playful, mischievous Si Yin to naive and innocent Su Su and finally the aloof with an attitude Bai Qian - by far her best performance. Together these two produce the chemistry to keep audiences thrilled and satisfied. Overall the cast is well put together with several other memorable faces (Zhang Bin Bin, Dilraba etc) making the drama that much more enjoyable

*Rewatch (10/10):
Absolutely. 58 episodes did not feel long one bit. It slowed down a bit near the end, but I see it as necessary for the many characters and developments to come full circle.

*Last thoughts?
- All the sets, props, scenery and people are simply eye-catching, which keeps one visually interested all the way through.
- Aside from the visual fest and story, Mark Chao is another reason to rewatch

It's been a while since I enjoyed a romance-fantasy genre this much, this will be going straight into my archive of favorites. No doubt one of the best Chinese dramas have to offer

watching BTS and thumb up for Mark Zhao playing with his long hair....he's kind of a guy who grows on you after a while.
and why costume designer hated MiGu so much is a mystery!

Guys, is there anyone who've seen BOTH ice fantasy and eternal love? And i don't mean just a few episodes, I mean someone who watched all the episodes of both dramas... I'm not big on wuxias, I did watch Ice fantasy and loved it, but I want to try out eternal love too (already watched 7 episodes) and I want to hear an honest opinion about which show is better... like, if I enjoyed IF (the only fantasy drama I loved), would I enjoy eternal love too? I already have quite a few chinese wuxias dropped or on hold and I don't want to pick another one just to get bored middle way...

The visuals for both dramas are great, but I'm more interested in the romance... I loved IF mostly because of YanDaxShi relationship, so romance-wise Eternal Love has a couple who could get me as addicted?

Thanks so much for the answer, now I'm definetely going to continue with EL. I've seen a few MV's on youtube and to be honest Feng Jiu and Di Jun also caught my attention more than the main couple. Dunno why the second couple almost always works better for me when it comes to chinese wuxias. As I said, I love IF mostly because of the second pair, so I'm looking for something similar now, giving that I wasn't able to finish another drama since IF ended. Romance-wise I'm more for the YanShi type of relationship, who isn't really in my face, but more subtle / hinted and conflictual / intriguing, the type of relationship who leaves the audience wonder and wanting for more, if you know what I mean. For that reason Empress ki is also another fav of mine, because they didn't show for sure untill the last episode who's the one she really loves, altough I knew. Journey of flower was ok, but it didn't have the addictive factor for me.

Yes. Same here. Watched both. But EL is much better, more romance and one storyline, whilst IF storyline feels like parts they glued together to fill 62 episodes.

Also, this might be the first time in forever where I didn't feel like the ending was rushed. The director/staff managed to fit all the important elements of the novel nicely into this drama without leaving out much. They even elaborated on the FJ and DHDJ couple! Happy watching!

I rarely watch chinese drama. The last time was Perfect Couple and Love Me If You Dare.It felt so long ago. And I did'nt like them..did'nt even finish watching one of them actually..When I first started this show, I did'nt know what I'm really getting myself into..Ohmyyy now that I did. I want to hug myself because I made a good choice of picking this show. Eventho it has 58 eps, it really did'nt feel that long. You will keep on wanting to watch more and more. That's how addictive the show is.The chemistry between main leads was amazing. The plot was intriguing. I even fall in love with it's main fictional character ..ohhh Ye Hua ..He's mine okay! lol :D The show really deserved the high rating. It also ruined me like never before . It ruined the other drama that I watched after it. I keep on finding myself searching other chinese fantasy romance similar to EL while waiting it to be completely subbed and sadly I couldnt find it!! (T.T) Please guys, if you have a recommendation of similar drama like EL don't hesitate to tell me okay? ^^

I saw that there's 2 version of JOF and both of them released in 2015. Which one of them u really meant? :) and for PWY, is that drama heavy on political side? I'm not in the mood for political drama at the moment actually..

You can try out ice fantasy, though the reviews aren't as great, I loved it. I'm not big on wuxias, to be honest, but I belive both IF as well as EL are more leaning towards fantasy in style and they are both easier to follow and understand from the get go than a typical wuxia.

@blabla100, I've seen the page of IF. Due to quite low rating and numerous criticism toward the drama, I kinda hesitated to watch the show :p In the term of romance, does it have many romantic scenes like EL and how about the chemistry btwn main leads? is it good as EL?

      blabla100 13 days ago - edited

I haven't seen EL yet (I've just watched the first 7 episodes), so I don't really know how much romance does it have, but speaking for myself, the main reason why I enjoyed ice fantasy that much was because of the great chemistry and intriguing relationship the second leads had. I won't go as far as calling it a romantic relationship, but heck, they rulled the whole show as far as I'm concerned. I know the reviews aren't that great and I admit I was kinda angry at some point too, but last week a sequel of 16 episodes aired and we kinda got some closure. The main leads are ok, the visuals are as great and the OST is even greater, tbh. I can't really compare them yet giving that I've only seen 7 episodes of EL only, but I'm going to watch a few more before making up my mind, since so many people seem to be so crazy over it.

I would love to hear an honest opinion of someone who watched both dramas as well

This drama is so beautiful I am still confused on what lives they or at now I finished episode 10 and mo yuan without a beard made it seem a different person

    • Reply
krystalsoojungs 15 days ago - edited

Yup, it's a different person! Mo Yuan has a beard for pretty much the entire drama, so it makes him easily identifiable. The guy that looks exactly like him without a beard is Ye Hua (he should be introduced very soon since you're on episode 10).

It grows on one (like the peach blossom trees). I was the same way, in the beginning, because of the large number of episodes, but it's finally over now (...big sigh of relief). I watched the last two episodes today. I was able to remove some partiality, and review it as a creative work.
