MDL's 2023 Watch Challenge

For this year's challenge, we have chosen the theme animals. While this affects our choice of words, it is just for fun. However, understanding the wording used in the challenge may come in handy:

Essential: Title 

Route: Prompt that describes the traits your Essential (title) must have

Habitat: a group of 5 routes 

Treat: An extra route that you can use as a substitute when neither choice of route feels right for you.

So many choices... 

To complete a Habitat:

1. Choose ONE of two routes to find a title that fills an essential

2. Add 5 Essentials: Watch 5 titles matching 5 Routes in the Habitat of your choice. You can also choose to use a treat to complete the habitat.

3. You must watch the entire title within the period of January 1-December 31, 2023, no matter when you join the challenge.

4. Each essential (title you watch) can only be used ONCE in the whole challenge.

5. You can add the essentials in any order you want and move them around until you turn in your entry.

6. To complete a Level and obtain access to the animal of your choice, you must complete the number of habitats stated in the table below: 2 habitats for the Plains Korean Crow, 29 for the Forest Blue Magpie etc...

7. To compete a Stage (Plains, Forest, etc.), you must obtain access to all the animals and start over in the new environment.

8. For each stage you enter just add a number in the same square.

As this year is a limitless challenge, if you do happen to complete more than 125 blocks/ 635 titles in 2023, we will of course add more stages.

Using Treats

• Each Treat can only be used ONCE in the challenge.
• You may use as many treats as you want per Habitat, but remember you only have a limited number of treats determined by the environment you have reached.
• You will create the treat routes all on your own, and you may use anything NOT covered in this challenge. You may also go to previous years' challenge prompts for inspiration. 
• Every time you start a new stage, you will be awarded a new number of treats according to the table below.

Taxonomy 

In the following habitats your mission is to find essentials that according to type or genre. 

Time is Relative

In the following habitats your mission is to find essentials that have something to do with time,  in the first habitat you are instructed to find essentials that started airing  between certain dates, in the second  and third one  you get to dig deeper in to the concept of time 

The Chronicles of MDL 

In the following  habitats your mission is to find essentials by exploring MDL, your personal favourites and  those others have awarded or written about. 

Getting up Close and Personal 

In the following habitats you are asked to find essentials that have to do with  relationships and the human experience most of these are tags, but in some cases we have  inclosed a list or used the words features so please pay attention. We would also like to warn sensitive participants , as some of the routes  below are indeed dark. but remember you can always choose a lighter route. 

Significant details 

In the following  habitats we ask of you to look for the details in the significant scenes, in the first one (14) we ask you to notice the surroundings, in the other the objects involved (15).  

The Main Attraction 

-In the following  habitats your mission is to find  essentials where one of the main characters  (listed as a main) either is ..., gets a... has a...  Each route will either include a a tag or a link to a list with more detailed instructions.

-In the following  habitats your mission is to find essentials  that feature  the following things. Each route includes a link to a list with more detailed instructions. 

Name and Cover 

In the following habitats we ask of you to pay  attention to the name and cover of the title.  For the first one (23) your mission is to find titles that have one of the following things. For the second one (24)  your mission is to look at the cover. Each route includes a link to a list with  more detailed instructions. 

Origin

-In the following habitat your mission is to find essentials from the countries of MDL. You get to choose either watch 5 titles from 5 different countries Or watch  7 titles from 7 different countries. 

Note:  You must  gather essentials from all 7 countries in every environment if you wish to get to the next stage (environment) of the challenge.  You may not use treats in the international habitat if you wish to get the TIGER badge.

Treats

This is where you  gather  treats, to use whenever you wish to avoid the paths given in a habitat. You come up with the treats  on your own, they may not cover anything mentioned in this challenge (but you may use previous years' prompts for inspiration). Every time you start a new stage, you will be awarded a new number of treats according to the table below.
